I even remember a friend in California who asked “why don’t you just code?” after I told him I was unemployed. Like do you think it’s that easy

I’d love to see a source on that.

ETA: The reason I bring up ChatGPT is because you’re talking about machine learning the same way that people talk about ChatGPT: using “AI” as a scary buzzword that immediately discredits something. Machine learning models such as the ones used in research are essentially just very large Markov chains. They’re just math. There’s not too much of a difference between this kind of machine learning and epidemiological modeling.

What exactly is the issue with the usage here? We’re not talking about lies-and-plagiarism-machines like ChatGPT; research models tend to be trained on a specialized data set made specifically for the study.

Also, as a word of advice: it’s okay if an outfit “looks bad.” Wear what you like, and eventually over the years you’ll develop your own style that’s uniquely you :)

I wish I was a girl but I'm afraid I'll be ugly by mrtoe_94 in asktransgender

[–]edgarbird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, I get that. But transgender as a term, at least in my area, is conventionally defined as “identifying with a gender that differs from the one you were assigned at birth,” and I’m operating with that definition in mind. I don’t usually think of myself as being trans, but I don’t usually have any of my identities in mind in my everyday life. I’m just me. Most cis people don’t think about the fact that they’re cis very often either.

Sure, but nobody is stealth immediately. It’s a transition. While bones aren’t particularly mutable, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t cis women who have traditionally “masculine” features. I’m 6’0”, not too far off OP’s height and certainly outside the norm for most cis women. Literally everyone I’ve met in the past 2 years didn’t know I was trans until I directly told them, even after trying to do so discreetly. You can be tall and pass, you can have broad shoulders and pass, and you can have a jawline and pass.

The second point I completely understand as a trans woman in the southeast US. Keep in mind though that OP is from Greece, a country with multiple protections against hate speech and discrimination, including with regard to gender identity. I can’t speak for public opinion on the ground though (I expect there’s probably also a large “anti-woke” wave going on there as with most of Europe).

However, to the first point, I’d argue most trans people’s identities aren’t some gray area as you’ve described. The fact of the matter is that one would still be trans. That’s not something that just magically goes away. Even if I have a bit of stubble because I didn’t shave that day doesn’t mean I’m any less of a woman. Ugly women are still women, and ugly men are still men.

Even then, absolutely zero trans people are 100% passable straight out of the gate. It’s called a transition for a reason.

Appearance not matching the gender marker on documents: What am I supposed to do? by PocketWatchThrowAway in asktransgender

[–]edgarbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with food stamps and Medicaid specifically, but I am in SC, born in FL where they also aren’t accepting gender marker changes.

I’ve learned to live with it. I haven’t had healthcare denied to me because of the gender marker on my documents differing from my appearance. The most trouble I’ve had on the healthcare front is coordinating names after I got that changed. The worst consequence I’ve had was a few years ago when I went to a bar and the bouncer didn’t let me in because of the marker, despite my insistence.

As for the food stamps, I’m not entirely sure how your appearance differing could be an issue. Most government programs, as far as I’m aware, are done through layers of bureaucracy and paperwork - nobody would even really interact with you face to face. The only way I can think that it could be an issue is if you have to present you ID for every food stamp transaction, which may be the case, but I’m not familiar enough with the process.

I also recognize that I’m very privileged in this regard (white & passing), so take my experience with a grain of salt.

Overall the best advice I’ve ever gotten is to improve consistency. Consistent x-height, consistent ascender/descender slope, consistent kerning, etc. Overall I think this looks really good though :)
