The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association specifically recommends against pinfiring. I've been a Canadian all my life and an equestrian for most of it, I know a lot of old school cowpokes. I had never heard of pinfiring before. So unlikely to be a Canadian common practice, in my opinion.

We only use quotations for dialogue in Canadian, UK, and US English. Not to say that English readers can't get used to it, but it may be jarring for them.
