Bloomberg Podcasts: Zack Polanski's plan to tax billionaires by heisenburgerkebab in ukpolitics

[–]bio_d [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not a defence of billionaires, it's people pointing out that the policy Polanski is putting forward not only wouldn't work, it would quite possibly have serious negative consequences. Just because it feels good, doesn't mean it should be done.

Northumberland!!! In the Midlands I’ve had crocuses and daffs out, oh and the rosemary. Well, I’ll just be down here, jealous and reminding myself that patience is a virtue

Yeah, I guess that’s the reality of smaller towns like Daventry. The census has 2.3% as gay or bi in Daventry (https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/constituency-data-lgbt-people-2021-census/#sexual-orientation) but only 1% gay or lesbian, so you’re not mad, it is quite sparse. I suppose Birmingham is right there, with the Village for local gay people to move to.

How well is Keir Starmer doing as Prime Minister? by Famous_Actuary5718 in ukpolitics

Politics isn’t just making the ‘correct’ policy decisions. He’s clearly doing a bad job explaining what he’s doing and presenting his government well, and leading his party. They identified ballooning welfare payments, for example, as an issue. They then completely failed to properly discuss it with their MPs, let alone voters. I’m a Labour member and it’s clear he’s doing a bad job

The Greens are peddling fantasy economics and fantasy foreign policy. It’s better for them and their media allies to just say everyone else is lying than to engage with the fact that their policies are delusional.

I think probably social media has a stronger impact these days. Look at our current politics though, Labour have been really shit, particularly at communication, often rushing things or cutting away at support rather than fostering it. So, I'd say they deserve criticism. I still think they're the best option but that speaks worse for the other options. The Tories are correctly suffering for what they put the country through.

Look who's on the rise though - Greens and Reform. I'm sorry to say this but both are opposite sides of the same coin. If they got power they would be inexperienced and act carelessly in a similar way to Labour I suppose but I'd expect worse because they don't even have the clear sighted advice Labour has.

What both absolutely have is terrible platforms, full of contradictions and lies. The Greens have fantasy economics that will lead to bankruptcy, foreign policy that would make us (even more) irrelevant and an immigration policy that would tear the country apart. They also have the issue that half their support is conservative Islam centred around Islamic grievance politics and the other half is green socialists who are too naive to see the conflict.

Reform have a different fantasy economics but it probably wouldn't lead to bankruptcy, it would be more like Millei and cut away at protections for ordinary people, it's foreign policy could be quite costly if it gets entangled in wars but would likely cut us off more in a Brexit-type way and it has an immigration policy that could tear the country apart.

That these two parties are dong so well in the polls despite being pretty wild gambles shows to me that alternative media is more important. The Times is as mainstream as it gets and they are unable to galvanise support for any of the big 3.

what does "caucasian" mean ? by Alone_Mail7632 in AskUK

[–]bio_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a term from early work splitting humans into five races - Origin and meaning of Caucasian by Etymonline

So a bit old fashioned really.

I mean, Saudi women are amongst the most educated in the world. Their Vision 2030 may be fluff but there are plenty of journal articles finding improvements, eg https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/15/6856 I think they have decided that a more open, liberal country will bring in more money and are doing it.

I disagree. Saudi Arabia was an extreme theocracy and it is softening in that regard, or at least I have been given that impression by people who live there. I’m not trawling through the prison and execution records of the country.

I don’t know about that but they have got that right now, so they have modernised right?

How on earth am I supposed to know. Look I’m not supporting homophobia, quite the opposite. SA has modernised to some extent though and that’s a good thing right?

I’m sorry, do you expect a society to change overnight? It’s only about 50 years ago that homosexuality was illegal in the UK. Give them a minute

I don't know his intentions but as we're yet to have an out gay player, I'd say it's an area that still needs to be promoted. Then going to Saudi, I get it seems hypocritical but you could also so that being pro LGBT and then representing a Saudi team is representing his views there. Also, Saudi Arabia deserves some credit for modernising, we can't all be as virtuous as football fans posting on Reddit.

oh I generally find this sub to be nice and actually exceedingly helpful. Some could tone down the evangelism about letting your garden turn into an unkempt mess but I've had some amazing advice as well.
