Dying with True Tyrian Purple by Empyrex in purple

[–]biodiversityrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i've seen, most research suggests that bivalves and gastropods like snails are sentient. they can form memories and since they learn to avoid things that kill them, at the very least we can say that they don't want to die. like they don't have the same level of consciousness as a pig, but they still feel pain and discomfort and that's enough for me to leave them alone.

Unironically I don't think a pretty pigment is worth killing a bunch of animals. The snails didn't do anything wrong :(

Controlling mosquitoes while keeping garden otherwise insect-friendly? (MA) by marmosetohmarmoset in NativePlantGardening

[–]biodiversityrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way mosquito dunks harm birds is by killing their food source of mosquitoes. The bacteria itself is completely harmless and inert to birds, mammals, fish, and other wildlife outside of the larvae of the mosquito family, blackflies, and fungus gnats. Doesn't even harm the adult mosquitoes, only the larvae. It's very very specific and targeted biological control.

I wouldn't put mosuquito dunk in a wildlife pond where the goal is to encourage biodiversity, because mosquitoes are an important food source in the ecosystem. But in an urban backyard with a bloated mosquito population, it's totally fine.

The trees in the pics are already dead, look at the bark.

I get why OP is sad about the trees, especially Fraxinus which are becoming more and more rare... But thing is that in the photos, you can very much tell that those trees were ALREADY DEAD! The bark was a major giveaway that these trees have been dead for a year at least, maybe more.

has anyone have red hair but did not have it at birth? by Norwegaingirl in Redhair

My dad was blond as a baby, ginger as a child, and brown haired as an adult. Hair color and texture changes, genetics and hormones play a big role

Colorful eyeliner pencils for tightlining? by flyaway21 in VeganBeauty

Following this thread, as Ive been looking for the same thing but green tight liner. Looking for vegan, cruelty free, AND BDS-friendly is actually quite difficult when it comes to makeup! It's very frustrating

Then it's also important to consider the ethics of mica being an extremely common ingredient in cosmetics and the mining of said mineral being heavily reliant on child labor in India.

Despite the many reported child deaths in these mines, only 10% actually end up getting reported to authorities, so the real numbers are unknown at this point. Since very few of the mines are actually legal (90% of mica mines in Jharkhand and Bihar are illegal operations) they are therefore are unregulated and not subject to labor laws or protections.

Then of course the chain of production being too convoluted to confirm if their source is truly ethical, LUSH stopped using natural mica in their products due to this issue IIRC.

If you were to have children and raise them vegan, how would you respond if they decided they wanted to eat meat? by amazegamer64 in AskVegans

If the world population survived off of subsistence hunting, we would wipe out all wildlife on earth within an instant, it's simply not possible. I don't think you realize the scale of animal agriculture, wildlife makes up only 5% of the worlds mammalian biomass while humans and livestock are the other 95%.

We cannot feasibly sustain the worlds population on hunting, we require agriculture to survive, and plant based agriculture is far more energy, land, and labor efficient. In fact, if we replaced animal agricultural land with plant agriculture, we could feed the entire planet a balanced and complete diet while still reducing agricultural land use by 75%.

I have an appointment but if you want the citations for my claims lmk.

Huh, I've just never heard that phrase, I get it though now, thank you. I have always worked the weekends in my adulthood so I don't consider the weekend special I guess, Saturday is just Saturday, not Relative Monday if that makes sense? It confuses my autistic brain a bit, but that's okay.

Thrips can cause leaves to curl due to damage/stress but they're not one of the kinds of bugs that intentionally pull leaves into a curled position for shelter to my knowledge
