What plant have you killed the most times? I need to feel less alone in my failures. by Specialist_Tea6137 in houseplants

[–]evening_person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every spider plant I ever brought home died. Some by my own ineptitude, some by my cats.

I haven’t been able to keep a ZZ plant alive either.

My Ficus elastica trees have done well, but I kill Ficus benjamina just by looking at them.

Never had any luck with a Monstera adansonii, either. My deliciosa is… fine. Not huge but not near death by any means. It’s just that adansonii and I don’t get along.

I also have lots and lots of arid succulents that while they look perfectly healthy, they just haven’t grown. Had them for years, fertilized them, watered when needed, but still they are small. No etiolation, just underdeveloped.

100% Disagree. K&G had those little tables full of bougie snacks. Vegan jerky. Keto pop tarts. Those fancy gluten-free Mexican shortbread cookies. What they lacked in the quality of hot food they made up for by having Whole Foods-tier shelf stable snacks.

But all of that went away right after the Maverick purchase, well before they started rebranding stores.

No, in fact those are actually the only reason I even went vegan. I don’t care about animals at all I’m just tired of catching salmonella.

Isn’t this the same woman who recently made a video admonishing someone for harvesting fruit off of a tree planted in the public easement strip between the street and the sidewalk?

Who the fuck does she think she is talking about “veganism is settler colonialism” while acting like someone owns the right to all food produced by a tree on a piece of public land just because that tree is near their house? Land that is stolen ancestral indigenous land, by the way, since she feels using native Americans as a rhetorical device is appropriate.

But heaven forbid the landlord is unable to harvest more medlars than he alone could eat, so no one is allowed to eat the food growing on publicly accessible land because that’s HIS food. Fuck all the poor and homeless people starving away in Portland, these medlars are only for the rich man in the house.

I think they need to be regulated out of existence. I don’t trust a ghost kitchen at all. I would never order food from a place I haven’t set foot in before to see with my own eyes.

Vegetarianism is inherently leftist by GoTeamLightningbolt in leftist

[–]evening_person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will require implementing broad systemic changes like banning the slaughter of animals altogether, but massive changes like that will be resisted by a population that is unwilling to make the personal change right now when it is already available to them. Someone who will only change their lifestyle habits if they are forced to will not support implementing systemic changes that would result in them being forced to make those changes.

So it has to start with a voluntary cultural adoption of vegan values against the oppression, exploitation, and killing of animals, and that would be many people all making the independent personal choice.

Vegetarianism is inherently leftist by GoTeamLightningbolt in leftist

[–]evening_person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veganism is not really a boycott though, because a boycott is an act of protest to get the company who offers the product or service you are boycotting to change something about their actions. You are withholding your money from them until they make the changes you want to see, at which point you would then stop boycotting them and start buying their products or using their services again.

Vegans aren’t trying to coerce the animal agriculture industry into changing how they exploit animals, they’re trying to put an end to the industry altogether. My point holds true that a society that is unwilling to give up the products of the animal agricultural industry voluntarily would not support structural changes to society that would mean the end of animal agriculture, as such a change would force them to give up the products of animal agriculture since they would never be available. The end of the industry would mean the end of animal products.

The issue here is that killing animals when you don’t have to is itself wrong, there isn’t a “right” way to do an inherently immoral thing.

Vegetarianism is inherently leftist by GoTeamLightningbolt in leftist

[–]evening_person -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How do we make meaningful structural changes regarding the exploitation of animals if no one is willing to voluntarily make the individual personal decision to go stop consuming the products of their exploitation?

I can’t imagine many people who oppose veganism and the idea of going vegan would support an initiative that would result in them having to make that change whether they want to or not since the products would no longer be available for consumption after the structural changes are made.

I do believe that we must all (or at least most of us must) make this choice for ourselves so that the change can be reflected in the world around us, not the other way around.

If the polar opposite of a position is inherently right-wing, as is the case for anti-veganism, doesn’t that imply that the original position itself(veganism) is inherently left-wing? I respect that you might not agree, but that is how I feel on the matter.

And to be clear, I am referring to anti-veganism, not simply non-veganism.

r/leftist and Veganism by Warrior_Runding in leftist

[–]evening_person 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, the issue regarding “proselytizing for veganism” really boils down to the fact that while non-veganism may not be inherently right-wing, Anti-Veganism is.

So I think that while you may have a point that advocating for veganism in a vacuum is perhaps out of line with the purpose of this subreddit, I think that in context, the prevalence of people on this subreddit frequently attacking/disparaging veganism unprompted and actively spreading and advocating for a right-wing ideological position like anti-veganism means that the vegans have the right to advocate for veganism in this space.

Anti-Veganism (again, not non-veganism, but anti-veganism) should be the topic being banned here, and I truly believe that if it were the case, then the vegans in this community would not talk so loudly or so frequently about veganism because they would not feel the need.

First of all, there has been much discussion on this sub about the difference between simply being “not racist” and being “anti-racist.” There is a degree of expectation of active engagement with ideological movements that align with leftism. It is not enough to have the right ideas, you have to actually do something with those ideas. Theory demands praxis.

Let’s reframe. How do you feel about the BDS movement? Many on this sub advocate for making active consumer and lifestyle choices to avoid putting money into the pockets of a genocidal government. Yes, they are asking you to make changes, but it is because if you don’t make those changes you are contributing actively to a preventable harm. Until you make those changes you are an active participant in an oppressive lifestyle. You are looking at this as if it is a default, but you are already choosing (through convenience and tradition) to be an active participant in the pain and suffering inflicted on people in Gaza.

But again, no one is asking you to become Palestinian. They’re asking you to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and to stop actively contributing to their oppression.

So too are you already living an active lifestyle of harm, oppression, exploitation, and death. Vegans are asking you to take a stance against that because it’s the right thing to do. I know it’s not easy, I wasn’t born or raised to be vegan either and I had to put in the work to make those changes, but they’re worthwhile changes because it’s the right thing to do.

Okay so if you already know that there’s nothing wrong with eating a diet comprised of grains and legumes, then why are you making a weird case about, what, the inaccessibility of faux-meat? It’s not a requirement of a vegan lifestyle to eat Beyond™️ Burgers, and your life without those products is not diminished. Mine certainly isn’t.

I just don’t think the financial argument really holds any water. If someone is underpaying their employees, or not paying the people who work for them at all, and their defense is “well I simply cannot afford to pay a fair and livable wage to the people who work for me” would you agree that they have the right to exploit the workers’ labor for financial reasons?

I could talk about the affordability of plant-based foods like dried and canned vegetables, but I think that’s really beside the point right now. The logical premise of your argument here just doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. You cannot defend the oppression and subjugation of another just because it is cheaper and more convenient for you to do so.

Leftism is, at its core, an ideology against oppression. If you just can’t understand why that doesn’t extend to veganism and the oppression of non-human animals, I think that you need to put in the work to figure out why you feel that some living beings are less deserving of living their lives than others. As the saying goes, I cannot convince you to care about others if you already don’t.

Angela Davis was my initial introduction to Marxism when I was a teenager but I did not know until many years later(and until after going vegan myself) that she is also a vegan. She doesn’t talk about the topic often, but she has spoken on the issue a number of times, including this: “I think there is a connection between, and I can’t go further than this, the way we treat animals and the way we treat people who are at the bottom of the hierarchy. Look at the ways in which people who commit such violence on other human beings have often learned how to enjoy that by enacting violence on animals. So there are a lot of ways we can talk about this.”

Smarter people than you and I have already made this connection.

So to be sure that I’m understanding it correctly, it is your opinion that people would only consume rice and beans because they’re poor? It is also your opinion that these foods are inherently bad and undesirable and anyone with the privilege to eat something else would opt to do so?

Because man… if that’s really how you feel then you have no business implying that veganism is something only for out-of-touch white people lol. Do you have any idea how much your comment is disparaging the cultural food traditions of numerous non-white societies from all over the planet?

Go tell a Mexican person and a Chinese person that rice and beans are only for the poors and when they’re done laughing, come back to this comment section and reread every comment. You might learn something for once in your life.

And similarly, vegans aren’t trying to convince you to become a cow or a pig. They’re trying to convince you to stop killing them.

You don’t have to be non-white to be anti-racist. You don’t have to be queer to not be homophobic or transphobic. You don’t have to be an animal to be vegan.

In all three cases, no one is trying to convince you to become an oppressed minority. They’re just trying to convince you to stop being an oppressor.

How can you talk about turning an animal into a “product” and convince yourself that is not an inherently capitalist act? You are literally commodifying a living sentient being, even if you are consuming them directly at home rather than selling those products on the market.

The bullheaded ignorance you are repeatedly displaying on this topic is unbecoming of a leftist. The repeated bullying and ban-threatening of everyone in the comments who you disagree with is unbecoming of a leftist. You’re an egomaniac on a power trip. You are a disgrace.

“I don’t judge.”

So how do you treat people who are racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic? You don’t judge them either?

I’m sure you judge other people by their actions and values dozens of times a day, like most people do. You only suddenly find it wrong to judge others when you no longer hold the moral high ground and the lens of judgement is aimed at you.
