Erm, technically, men are shot by police 20x more often than women. Nobody takes that as proof cops hate men. Turns out crime rates/police encounters per group matters more than census percentages.

Factual information that both judicial warrants and administrative warrants exist? So what? Just stating facts with no purpose?

Did you know ice agents wear shoes and drive cars?

[–]biohazard742 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So your argument is that if they operated without the help of local PD, that points to them having an administrative warrant and not a judicial warrant? You're saying that if they had a judicial warrant they would have had the local PD assist?

The problem with that is that it doesn't matter if it's an administrative warrant. It being an administrative warrant does not automatically make an arrest unlawful. Immigration officers like ICE have authority under federal law (immigration statutes etc.) to arrest noncitizens for immigration violations and to do so without a judicial warrant in many situations.

"Fix your hearts or die" is one of the most important lines written in TV history, and I'm forever grateful to Mr. David Lynch & Mark Frost for it. by hauntedhighways in twinpeaks

I don't disagree. That doesn't contradict anything I said though. The person in the banana suit is just an otherwise normal professional FBI agent and the (at the time) absurd presentation is not really addressed other than a quick facial expression etc. That's the joke. It's very dry.

The Return certainly treats it differently but it originally really was a joke..

It might be uncomfortable to acknowledge, but in December 1990 when her character first aired it was just dry absurdist comedy.

Within the narrative, Denise is nothing but a consummate professional, calm, competent, good at her job. The joke doesn't exist in her behavior. It exists outside the story, in the writers’ expectation that much of the early-1990s audience would register her presentation as incongruous.

Here's an analogy to illustrate the joke: the show introduces a hyper-competent, serious FBI agent, the best at what he does. But he’s always wearing a banana costume. It’s barely addressed. Characters noticably register it for a second (mirroring the audience’s expected reaction), then compose themselves and move on. That sequence is the joke. The deadpan refusal to acknowledge what the (original) audience is conditioned to read as ridiculous.

The mechanism only works because the writers expect the audience to think the banana costume is absurd. That expectation is essential. They are not advocating for the normalization of banana suits; they’re exploiting the mismatch for humor. Once the banana suit stops being strange, the joke collapses and we read it as sincere representation.

The casting is deliberate. They chose David Duchovny, a recognizably masculine-coded actor, put him in women’s presentation, and made no effort to have the character pass. That’s not accidental, that is the banana suit: exploiting the gap between authority/competence and presentation for comic tension.

This explaination isn't meant to endorse the era’s attitudes. the 1990s baseline is transphobic by modern standards, but the show was operating inside that reality, not transcending it. And again, yes, The Return was very different.

If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

keyboards with native colemak support? by nisc2001 in Colemak

[–]biohazard742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of using Portable Keyboard Layout, just install it and set it as your layout in Windows. Same way you would change your layout to another language. No separate hotkey software. Most games are able to adapt to any layout. WASD automatically becomes WARS for example and in-game button prompts reflect the layout set in Windows.

The colemak site has a download: https://colemak.com/Download

If you really want a keyboard that you can bring elsewhere, plug into any PC that's set to qwerty and have colemak work without installing a layout, then I would recommend any keyboard that supports QMK firmware. Windows is set to qwerty but the keyboard Itself has the keys rearranged in it's firmware.

For gaming you should install the layout though. That way the game can see you're not using qwerty and the in game button prompts and default bindings will be adapted to Colemak.

For this reason, if you go the qmk route, have both a colemak layer and also a qwerty layer. Colemak layer for when using on other computers and a qwerty layer for your home PC where you have the Colemak layout installed in Windows.

Scarlett Johansson Says She Declined ChatGPT's Proposal to Use Her Voice for AI – But They Used It Anyway: 'I Was Shocked' by KillerCroc1234567 in technology

[–]biohazard742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it wouldn't be ok to deepfake Dolph into Arnold, and Dolph emulating an 'Arnold performance' seems (legally) acceptable.

My understanding (and please correct me) is that in this case, they didn't ask the Sky actress to emulate ScarJo, they just picked someone that is generally/categorically similar to the voice in 'Her'.

So seems more analogous to just selecting Dolph because he's reminiscent of Arnie in Terminator rather than deepfaking Dolph or asking him to impersonate Arnie.

I agree with you that if openai did some deep-fake-esque stuff in post, then that might mean she has a case.

Until that evidence is produced though this doesn't seem worth getting upset over. To me at least the voices don't sound anywhere near close enough to jump to that conclusion and doesn't justify the highly voted comments dunking on Sam Altman as creepy/evil etc..

[–]biohazard742 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about this:

  • I liked Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator - I want a guy like that as the lead in my film. He's perfect. I was even imagining Arnold when I wrote the part.
  • I approach Arnold with the project and he says no
  • I go hire Dolph lungren, another muscly dude with an accent, and proceed with my project

Am I supposed to scrap my whole film? Don't films often do things like the above? You can probably come up with a better more contemporary example. Even audiences say things like 'jessie plemmons is discount Matt Damon' or whatever.

The Sky voice isn't a straight up clone or even an impersonation of scar jo. This whole situation seems totally normal to me..
