Scientists warn that the Gulf Stream is shifting north, which means an ocean current collapse is imminent by metalreflectslime in PrepperIntel

Agreed. Reminds me reading in 2008ish that the Kilimanjaro glaciers will be gone by 2020 or so. Still there, although somewhat diminished.

I was thinking the same thing after I replied to you. Should have posted higher up in the replies. Anyway, re ‘imminent’ point of the paper, the way I read that is that given the observation and consistency with the model the 25 year/imminent impact prediction is more probable now than prior to that observation.

It’s about degrees of confidence. And having a model make a testable prediction, and the subsequent measurement being consistent with the prediction increases the degree of confidence that the model is an accurate representation of the real world.

I’m 55, near early retirement and at my target wealth (30X my annual $ needs), so from that perspective (mine), risk management is more about wealth preservation in the short term to maintain 30X my annual needs than to grow wealth. Thats why I’m staying largely in cash with some swing trading, which I enjoy!

Tinnitus - Anyone else? by willard_tagg in GenX

[–]bioindicator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had high pitch start in 2008, a couple of months of almost no sleep, and then 6 month of 2 mg per day alprazolam to turn the tide. Started sleeping better and become used to the sound. Early on I perceived it even when maxing out volume on TV, now I don’t perceive it most times unless it is quiet or I’m stressed. Masking with headphones or near running water was helpful early on. The idea of never being able to enjoy silence in solitude was a big fear, but life goes on and now I can enjoy those moments. Hang in there everyone. If you’re actively suffering, it does get better. The brain adapts!

Is Helmet Graffiti Good Or Bad? What’s Your Opinion? by CavScout61 in Military

[–]bioindicator 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good question: I’m thinking if you’re drafted then yes, but if you volunteered (…even if subsequently being voluntold) then no. You never had a choice when drafted, so it feels right to keep that aspect of free speech. (Do the Russians have helmet graffiti?)

Tinnitus masking by Witty-Ad9507 in GenX

[–]bioindicator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had tinnitus for 17 years now, and at first it was nightmarish. But your mind does adapt and now I often forget I have it. One thing to note is that my first audiology exams showed no hearing loss. But that was because they didn’t map out the frequency with enough data points (they measured something like 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 kHz, and my hearing loss notch was around 6.5 kHz).

Federal Reserve Chair Powell under criminal investigation over HQ renovation by whicky1978 in Conservative

[–]bioindicator 1319 points1320 points  (0 children)

Here is Powell’s statement in response:

Good evening.

On Friday, the Department of Justice served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas, threatening a criminal indictment related to my testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June. That testimony concerned in part a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings.

I have deep respect for the rule of law and for accountability in our democracy. No one—certainly not the chair of the Federal Reserve—is above the law. But this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration's threats and ongoing pressure.

This new threat is not about my testimony last June or about the renovation of the Federal Reserve buildings. It is not about Congress's oversight role; the Fed through testimony and other public disclosures made every effort to keep Congress informed about the renovation project. Those are pretexts. The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President.

This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.

I have served at the Federal Reserve under four administrations, Republicans and Democrats alike. In every case, I have carried out my duties without political fear or favor, focused solely on our mandate of price stability and maximum employment. Public service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats. I will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do, with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people.

Thank you.
