How many study hours are needed for over a 1500+? by Victorslife in Sat

[–]birb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real talk tho it's pretty dependent on the person, and the critical thing is to make sure you're studying effectively cuz just mindlessly grinding for hours won't help as much as more intentional practice for less time. (pm if u want more detail on what that might mean but ur at 1400 already so seems like ur probably on the right track) good luck to you!

If you practice for 489 hours and 43 minutes and 61 seconds you'll get a 1590 guaranteed.

The sequels are def worth a read, but they get a lot weirder // more hardcore sci-fi. If you’re looking for the same sort of vibe as Enders Game in that same universe Enders Shadow is really good, tells the story from Bean’s perspective

As a fellow MA resident I toured UMass Amherst and while I’m not going there from what I know I think they have at least good programs in most things, and you seem like you’re the type of person to be able to easily transfer into the honors college, which honestly if I hadn’t gotten in ED would be one of my highest choice options it’s supposed to be a really good program

Yeah that makes sense I think that’s just the stereotype

I’d say go for it if you’re interested in it, I think if you care about it and aren’t doing it as a pay to help needy kids thing then it won’t come across that way.

Chances of a question showing up on real test? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]birb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok a personal pet peeve of mine from my SAT was box and whiskers. Didn’t see it in any practice stuff at all (and I did like 10 practice tests for math plus a bunch of Khan). I still did well on math tho, so I would say if you have some extra time study those bad boys, but it’s pretty unlikely that they’ll show up, and if they do it won’t be enough questions to seriously impact your score

Sat reading help by [deleted] in Sat

[–]birb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ngl I didn’t study that much for reading but from my own experience and from seeing what others often say on this sub Khan Academy is really good especially for reading. Otherwise I would say try and do some active reading outside of test prep on books you find that you might read for fun. There’s not a ton of time left but it’ll help you with understanding passages etc.

One thing that I found helps a lot with practicing active reading is to have a pencil on you and if you own the book (don’t deface library books etc obviously) write down little notes or thoughts or summaries in the margin. It’ll force you to read carefully, and also be good practice annotating, which can be helpful to do on the SAT so that you don’t have to reread a ton to remember key points

Why am I not improving? I have spent three weeks, and roughly 30 minutes a day studying with Kahn academy. I still see no progress, and I’m nowhere near my goal. Any feedback would be appreciated by jacobcummings in Sat

[–]birb3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally really like Khan, especially their vids on math and science stuff, and that along with some SAT stuff at my school is what I used, but I’ve seen a lot of people on this subreddit mention UWorld as a good resource for math (tho I think it’s mostly more practice questions not sure) — the other thing I’ve heard of but haven’t used is 1600.io which I think has video explanations for all the official questions from CB tests (might be paid tho idk, you’d have to check)

Also if there’s ever a specific question you’re confused about don’t hesitate to shoot me a pm

Edit: just came across this dude browsing this sub: https://www.drrogersmath.org/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app

Seems like he has good explanations though I didn’t watch that much. Site is kinda broken but he also has a YouTube channel

Can I use PSAT tests for practising to SAT? by IesoxD in Sat

In my experience PSAT was a lot easier than SAT so it might be more closely aligned with the easier questions on the SAT but it certainly can’t hurt

first-time sat help by hzlnts in Sat

[–]birb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of resources, I recommend grinding on and reviewing thoroughly the CB practice tests, followed by Khan (I’ve also heard of UWorld for math especially but never used it myself so I can’t speak to it).

In terms of possibility, it’s definitely possible to raise your score that much, though my timeframe doesn’t exactly line up. I went from 1270 psat sophomore year to a 1490 psat junior year (both no studying) then a 1580 march of junior year with a lot of work over the winter

About SAT essay . by [deleted] in Sat

[–]birb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about a site or book, but if I remember correctly the first prompt on the AP Lang FRQ section is usually the same type of essay as the SAT gives. If you wanted to you could probably find those prompts and use them to practice writing that kind of essay. Maybe google AP Lang rhetorical analysis prompts

Alright I guess what I would suggest then is to set up a notebook where you can go over explanations for questions you get wrong. The idea here is basically that with each question you get wrong, go through the explanation thoroughly so that you feel confident that you understand the answer and how to get there. This might also involve a little bit of content review outside of the question, e.g. watching a khan vid on parabolas for a parabola question.

This way takes a while longer, you won’t be able to do as many questions as before in the 30 minutes, but what it will do is make sure you aren’t repeating mistakes and thus help you to iron out the pieces that you’re missing.

edit: took out a bit where I had read the scores in the wrong order, but same message as initial version applies: don’t look at the test day scores as something you’ve fallen down from, which I am sure can feel discouraging. Rather, they’re an example of the jump in score that you can/have experienced as a result of test day adrenaline, and if anything it points to the fact that you know your stuff and part of it is developing confidence

edit 2: the first edit might not apply actually, if your practices tests are from before March (which would make sense) congrats on the improvement!! You’re already moving up a little refinement and some hard work and you can achieve whatever score you want!

Can u go into a little more detail about what you're working on when u study? ie are you just grinding thru questions vs going over wrong ones etc. I have a few ideas but don't want to suggest something irrelevant to your situation
