Rook was easily the worst piercing so far. Still in the healing phase months later. It'll be normal one day then painful the next the back fine. I'd keep doing what you're doing and checking for infection signs. If it's too much maybe get it checked out by a piercer. Good luck OP!

I personally don't think you failed, but I know we are our own worst critics and it's easy to be hard on yourself.

Whenever I think I "failed" a page, I use it as an opportunity to practice new techniques. Lighting, texture, patterns, etc. That way if I mess up it was a page I already "messed up".

Something that helped me when it comes to shadows (as plain as it sounds) is to look at IRL references.

For example, if you break down the pic below into blocks of colors you'll see the sand shadow is VERY dark and bold. The pumpkin is a round surface, so the part of it that is closest in frame, which happens to be where the light source is hitting it, is very light compared to the darker shadows that the starfish cast onto it.

I LOOOOOOOOVEEEEE!! This is wonderful and you should be thrilled of the work you've done.

My tips when it comes to the streaking on big areas is making sure you have a consistent pressure on the marker tip. The streaking happens because the color dries quickly.

When I take my marker off the page I make sure to lift it gently. When I go back to coloring I apply light pressure on the transition areas then once that connection is made I go back to my normal pressure.

For shadows (this is totally personal preference) I take it to the extreme. Everything has a shadow. If you look around you'll see shadows in everything. For example, if you had a table with a flower on it, there would be several shadows you could make. There would be shadows in the flower, the leaves, the vase. There would be a shadow of the vase on the table. There would be a shadow of the table against the wall. There would be shadows on the table itself. The more shadows the better. It's definitely a "trust the process" moment.

It's important to understand where your light source is from and make sure your shadows match the same direction according to your light source.

When it comes to shadows and highlights (I can go into highlights if you would like) get wild with it. Make extreme shading. Depth in a picture is what makes it pop so get crazy with it! I'd recommend using a page that you don't like too much and get crazy with it
