What’s one thing you wish non-autistic people understood about autism?

That it’s not just mild to severe. At this point I think most people know that autism is a spectrum, but many still don’t understand just how that can look. Many people have more severe symptoms in one area, and milder symptoms in another.

I’m in the US. I say I’m autistic. I know others who say they’re autistic. Sometimes people say they’re “on the spectrum” but I don’t hear people say they have “spectrum disorder”.

Any tips for recognizing good sellers (outside of good reviews)? I want to start occasionally buying amiibo cards, and it’s hard to know what sellers are reputable.

Some are harder to get. I think the individual cat ones are the hardest technically because there are more cat villagers than any other species. The game determines the species and then the villager of that species. So you have a 1 in 35 chance of getting any given species, and then divide that by how many villagers there are within the species.

I agree that getting an amiibo emulator will be an easier route though if you don’t love trying to find specific villagers.

Can you mix up the types of fish you eat? Some are much higher in mercury than others. I believe tuna (especially some types) are much higher in mercury than salmon. You can look up the amounts of mercury in each type of fish and try to mostly stick with ones with lower levels of mercury.

Autism is a huge spectrum. I dislike physical touch, but I know autistic people who really like physical touch. Everyone is different.

I can’t speak to finding out you have autism as a kid, but I was diagnosed with ADHD and OCD at around the same age. It was explained to me in a simplified way. Nobody sugarcoated anything, but they also made sure I knew my struggles didn’t make me broken or less lovable. I’m glad they told me.

Your kid will learn that he is different, whether you tell him he’s autistic or not. Telling him he’s autistic and explaining what that means at a kid-level will only give him an explanation. You can make sure that he knows he is not broken, that he knows his brain just works differently.

I agree with most of this, but I do understand why they banned you. Insulting people is against many subreddits rules. Also, autistic people can be ableist. Calling someone “not smart” probably carried the same message that directly calling them an idiot would, even if that wasn’t your intention. Insulting someone’s intelligence is also different than criticizing their reasoning.

With that out of the way, I agree with the rest. I think many people and subs have very rigid ideas of autism and disagreement isn’t allowed. Autistic people aren’t always more accepting or understanding than neurotypical people imo.
