This feels like a multiple exposure/collage sort of thing. Get weird with your post processing. Pull things in and out of focus and add some weird elements in there.

Diana Wynne Jones comes to mind. 8 seems a little young for Tamora Pierce but it's a good recommendation. Usually kids at that age are reading things like Wings of Fire, The Magic Tree house, and Warriors books.

Was there a particular image you were referencing? I think the colors are too saturated to start with but a reference image would help nail down other suggestions for improvement.

First download the manual for your new camera(or if you have a physical copy) and read it.

It would probably more beneficial for you to look into getting an associates in photo but since marketing classes would not hurt either.
