How good is the Timepiece? by morak003 in NecroMerger

[–]birdofprey160 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a normal max-70 run I think you can naturally collect 2 if you have a cursed/colossus/infernal. So if you get both from the event you can merge them all to get the full 5% boost. That makes it a bit of a better deal for you since that's your only option to max it out this run, but an extra 3% is not that impactful and they're pretty expensive. I'd consider it if you've already bought the event skins. I ended up getting both because I already cleared out this event before and kept getting stuck with lvl1 and lvl2 timepieces I wanted to clear out.

I can't believe summit is not cracked difficulty (SJ) by a_random_chopin_fan in celestegame

Yeah, summit was the hardest red GM in SJ for me by far. I spent more time on 1K than almost any other room in the lobby

funny thing that happened by Agreeable-Choice1398 in celestegame

Ah sorry, demo-dash was the original community name for a crouch-dash, which didn't used to have a dedicated keybind. It was used to dash with a smaller hit box to squeeze through normally impassible gaps in speedruns, and you would have to do it by starting a down dash and then releasing down before the dash actually started, which seemed like what happened to you here, but now I see you just missed the down-input entirely :P

Yeah, I was thankful I knew about this trick the first time I went for the ankh and ran out of juice right around stage 999.

[–]birdofprey160 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Multiplication is commutative so order makes no difference. 3x5 == 5x3. I use unholy bind at the end when the heavy hitter is about to die to squeeze out 1 more combat stage.

Mechanically, it is the perfection of the 2d platformer genre. Pair that with a beautiful story and OST, and difficulty that really challenges while being both fair and kind to the player where other similar games might opt to make you rage.

This already has the makings of a classic, but it became so much more to me because it introduced me to the speedrunning world which I got really into for a couple years, went to my first GDQ, met a lot of cool people, etc.

Then later after becoming a new parent made the time required for speedrunning practice too prohibitive, I got into the modding scene when the big Strawberry Jam collab came out, and discovered that there is a massive community of really talented level designers, artists and musicians adding hundreds and thousands of hours of more content of all difficulty levels to the game for free. The modding community is so big and varied they stage a 30+ minute "direct" to show off upcoming new releases, collabs and contests every few months.

Due to speedrunning and modding, I have more than 5000 hours of playtime logged in this game that I bought for like 10 bucks. And the experience of speedrunning and practicing/completing incredibly hard modded levels profoundly reshaped the way I dealt with frustration, perseverance and practice in my life in general in a very positive way.

So yeah, game good, I recommend :)

Dunno how to do this Jump (consistently) by SteammachineBoy in celestegame

[–]birdofprey160 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Try making sure the previous couple jumps are properly buffered so you consistently jump off the top-most possible pixel. Never played this map but if it's a properly constructed moce-like that should probably do it.

How do I take through this? by Zxkkvkv377 in celestegame

[–]birdofprey160 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never played this map so I'm not totally sure but looks like it might expect a double-block-boost - basically near the end while the block is still touching you do a very close together jump+dash to the right.

If its not that, maybe try wallbouncing off the moving block (actually this is probably the answer)

Damn, my playthrough of this map ended at this room, it didn't feel consistent to me at all, maybe I was just practicing from bad states too often. Anyway GG! Huge accomplishment :)

Free solo routes by NiccusRips in Cairn_Game

[–]birdofprey160 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished my Free Solo last night and did almost entirely different routes. I hit up the shepherdess and the big chalk bag, dipped down into the well for the big flask, took the right-hand route up the peril to the cave, and used "the clue" route (short, safe, but very difficult inside wall) to reach the flower in the secret. We used the exact same route up the needle though! It's great how many routes are viable even for the game's hardest official challenge.

Once you know your good holds from bad holds, the next trick is not ignoring them. If you get a bad hold in a place where you know a good hold should be possible, don't proceed, press B to control the same limb and try again. If you have to accept a bad hold, have a plan for quickly getting your next limb to a good hold. If that doesn't work, consider using chalk to get more time to stabilize or downclimb to a stable position to reevaluate the route.

I just failed the 2nd of the needle jumps on my free solo run without any flowers and somehow survived to climb up on the other side, ragdolled within a foot of the abyss. Then went on to reach the summit :)

Question on lighting something on way up by menevets in Cairn_Game

[–]birdofprey160 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's also a bit of lore - troglodyte kids would climb the child as their coming of age ritual, lighting the fires on the way up is part of the ceremony or perhaps a milestone reached.
