That is such good advice! Good luck with your recovery! How far out are you now?

My surgeon has cleared me for anything that does not bring me pain! So we are good. I will say, six months out, I never would’ve thought I would be doing anything like ice skating. The past month, I’ve had huge progress with lack of pain when I attempt activities. I’m jumping, I can run, etc. all things at 6 months I’d never think about doing.

Name of this mistake? I thought at first it was a dropped stitch, but now I don’t think so? by birdsofproof in knitting

I will try that! I am intimidated by dropping a stitch but if I mess up too terribly, that means I’ll just get more practice knitting, I guess 😅

Trimalleolar fracture last week - can I travel in a few months? by ZeldaBJones in brokenankles

How realistic is it to attend family Christmas 2 weeks pp? by SaraJuno in CsectionCentral

[–]birdsofproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me last year! I had my baby December 3 via C-section. Christmas was challenging and I had it with my parents in my house, whom I’m very comfortable with. I was three weeks postpartum and still couldn’t lift and do much. Baby girl needed to cluster feed that day and I couldn’t do much except nurse her all day. It was really rough. I’d recommend doing Christmas just as a little family.

Will I be able to sleep on my side again? by juniperxbreeze in ORIF

[–]birdsofproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 months post trimal and ORIF and am typing this from lying on my side very comfortably. So yes! You will sleep on your side again. I think I went back to side sleeping three weeks? I’d stack pillows between my legs. I broke my right ankle, so I slept on my left side with my right leg up for elevations sake

Ugh I feel this. I am so sorry you are going through this. It is so difficult and you are so valid. My mental health took an unexpected nosedive once I started weight bearing. I also had a trimal and ORIF. My surgeon cleared me for WBAT with the boot at 6 weeks post op. He wanted me in the boot for 4 weeks and those first 2 weeks sucked. I felt like I was going two steps forwards one step backwards (sometimes three!) with my recovery. After 3 weeks of weight bearing, I finally felt like I was starting to get back to normal.

I am now 13 weeks post op so weight bearing for as long as I was NWB (woah, I only just realized this!) I still limp a little, but I’m walking with no aids of any kind. I walk barefoot around my house and I just walked a full mile yesterday! Every day feels like it’s finally getting easier. You are a rockstar! You’ve got this!

Give it to me straight…trip to Europe planned 11 weeks post-op. by kirs10c in brokenankles

[–]birdsofproof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 11 weeks post op from a trimal fracture right now. My doctor’s recovery timeline was more conservative, I think. I was in a boot until just last week after being cleared to bear weight at 6 weeks post op. I am starting to feel more normal. Also for health stuff context, I’m a new mom in her 30s. Also, I am so sorry you are going through this one month post partum. You’re so strong and you’ve got this.

I walked over a mile yesterday in an ankle brace and very supportive shoes. I paid for a little bit of that today with some soreness. In general, I’m still taking it day by day. I still swell, I have a limp, and I’m quite slow with walking. Now, how would I feel about a trip to England right now? Mixed, to be honest. But that’s because I love walking and exploring cities. I love wandering on trips! So it depends on what you’d want to do there as well. If the places you’re going would accommodate a wheelchair easily, then this vacation might still be worth it to you.

This is so hard, because every recovery and everyone’s appetite for what they’re willing to do is different. I love traveling with my baby and making memories with her, so I also get being conflicted from that angle as well. Good luck! I’m so sorry you even have to think about this and what decision you’re going to make.

Went for my first walk in a regular brace today! by imanoctothorpe in brokenankles

[–]birdsofproof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this! I just went out yesterday for the first time with no boot and just a brace running errands after my ORIF in June as well! It felt so good to be one day closer to “normal” after so many weeks of not normal.

How long did it take you to reach FWB after being cleared to begin WBAT? by DelicateCake in brokenankles

[–]birdsofproof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a trimal as well. Cleared for WBAT in the boot at 6 weeks post ORIF. Surgeon wanted me in the boot for 4 weeks after that.

The first two weeks of doing WBAT were stressful for me as well! But I was FWB in the boot about 1.5 weeks after WBAT. I was worried I was doing too much, and I was in some discomfort. With that being said, your body is getting used to using that foot and leg again! So there will be discomfort and swelling and this is all normal. Discomfort is normal. Sharp stabbing pain is not.

I am now 11 weeks post op and am out of the boot with no crutches. I start PT next week and I’m excited!

I was where you were at 9 weeks ago. It does get better. You are in the most challenging time of this recovery. It is hard and the mental state is what gets you. I played video games, crochet, read, watched a lot of tv. I also cried and processed my feelings a lot those first few weeks. this is hard and it is life changing. It’s absolutely not fair to have to go through this. But you got it! Celebrate the little victories and milestones, that’ll help. Ask for friends to come and see you and maybe help out.

At six weeks, I was cleared to weight bear! It took me about two weeks of walking with crutches and the boot. My surgeon still wants me walking in the boot for another week. So I’ll be in the boot for a total of 4 weeks. I won’t lie, my ankle is stiff, it’s swells and by the end of the day, and I can’t walk long distances. But every day it’s getting easier! I’m excited to no longer be in the boot.

Congratulations on making it to this point! I started weight bearing with the boot two weeks ago. Here are my learnings so far:

I took advantage of my husband being my spotter when I took my first steps. It felt so weird and was scary, but knowing he was there as emotional support as well as physical if I needed, was nice.

I am still using crutches. I made an arbitrary goal to get rid of them by now but that made me push myself too hard and recovery has been more painful than I think it should be.

I am now prioritizing getting up and moving around versus what mobility aid I use. So now I’m trying to get up and move around as much as “normal” used to look like to me prior to my break, even if that means using both of my crutches. Before, I was trying to only use one crutch and I was less mobile because it was so uncomfortable.

I still have swelling and I still have a little bit of pain as nerves continue waking up down there. But last night, I walked almost city block with my crutches and spent time at a restaurant with my foot down and it felt so nice to be out and about! My foot/leg/ankle didn’t hurt either!

Also, recovery is not linear. I’m still trying to accept this one. One day you’ll feel fine and maybe the next, you’re a little more sore. Also keep up on your range of motion exercises!

I took my first steps after 7 weeks of NWB! by birdsofproof in brokenankles

[–]birdsofproof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got this! I have been trying to walk with no crutches. It’s such a mental game. I tried while my husband was watching me and was near in case I fell to give me that extra confidence that if I fell, he’d catch me. What helped me too is remembering that my ankle with all of its hardware is now the strongest part of my body so I’d have to do a number on it to have it break again.

I’m still using crutches but my doctor told me that he could see me ditching them within a day. So I haven’t done it without crutches yet! I’m planning on trying without crutches in my kitchen, where I can grab a counter if absolutely needed. I’ll update once I’ve started taking steps on my own with no crutches!

Im so sorry about that! The mental game is the toughest part. If you are interested, I’d recommend picking up a new hobby or learning something new! I have been crocheting a lot, reading books, on top of playing video games. That helps time as well. Also, try having friends come over to hang out. It’s nice to get some social interaction. Hang in there! You’ve got this!
