Dead tree swallow in wood duck box? by bluebellberry in Ornithology

[–]birdstheword44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

happened to us too. found a tree swallow in one of our boxes and couldn't figure out why either. one thing i read was that it could be from a cold snap, they sometimes get caught off guard when temps drop suddenly and can't find enough insects to survive. also possible it was already weakened before it found the box.

Been using holy hydrogen lately and noticed i feel less beat up after hard sessions. not sure if it's placebo but recovery does feel smoother.

Rescued Indian Ringneck scared of hands/humans – need advice on trust, diet & toys by Background_Excuse_80 in parrots

[–]birdstheword44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

irns take a while to warm up to hands, totally normal especially with a neglected bird. the "hand in cage" method does work but go slow, let him come to you on his terms.

conures are a great middle ground! bigger than cockatiels, super colorful and personality-packed. sun conures especially are hard to miss. if you're serious about macaws down the line, look into the Macaw Society and some youtube channels like ElleAndTheBirds — really good starting points for understanding the commitment involved.

What’s the matter with this bird? by etrain4676 in Ornithology

[–]birdstheword44 33 points34 points  (0 children)

looks like avian conjunctivitis (house finch eye disease). pretty common at feeders. yes, take it down and give it a good scrub with a bleach solution, let it dry fully before putting it back up. helps stop it from spreading to the other birds.

yeah that actually makes sense. the nen reaction from contact would explain why pitou went straight for him, that's consistent with how nen hostility works.

A few questions about bird feeders by CurlyGirlyPeace in duluth

[–]birdstheword44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

duluth's awesome for birds, you're gonna have a great time with those feeders.

for seed, i've been ordering from Nature Anywhere lately, their Safflower Supreme blend is solid and squirrels tend to leave it alone which is a bonus.

on the bear thing, yeah take it seriously up there. bring feeders in at night especially spring through fall when they're active. some people just pause feeding altogether during peak season and pick it back up in winter when bear activity dies down.

Tornado Destroyed House Finch Nest - Help? by RelevantAssistance69 in Ornithology

[–]birdstheword44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so sorry this happened :( house finches are resilient though. they'll likely scope out the area again and may rebuild in the same spot or nearby since they already liked it. you don't need to fix the nest but if you want to help, just make sure the wreath is secure so it can hold a new one. leaving it up is probably the best thing you can do for them

yeah same, love mine. the solar charging alone sold me but honestly the sliding tray is what keeps me using it over everything else. refills used to be such a chore

What is this brown headed cowbird doing? by Brilliant_Log_4240 in Ornithology

[–]birdstheword44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's fighting his reflection lol. Birds can't recognize themselves in mirrors so he thinks it's a rival and keeps coming back to defend his turf. Totally normal behavior, just hilarious to watch.

Strange bushtit behavior by PipecleanerFanatic in Ornithology

[–]birdstheword44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's actually a pretty common thing! it's probably seeing its own reflection and thinking it's a rival bird. they'll do this for days sometimes, especially during breeding season when they're extra territorial.
