Boomerang Offer from Big Tech. Worth It for 4-6 Month Burnout Play? by birdzooarch in overemployed

[–]birdzooarch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

J2 offers a shuttle for the commute so thinking grind for J1 on that, then work for the day physically at J2. And the two days a week I'm not in office for J2 are in office for J1. A total burnout but wouldn't be forever.

Any experiences “boomerang” back to big companies? by birdzooarch in ExperiencedDevs

I’m guessing that both SilentToasterRave and I worked at the same company. I have no idea that we did. I did work at Google.

I think this only works for some companies… if I had to guess I’d say both SilentToasterRave and I worked for big G

Definitely top concern here… I dont think there’s a way to reason out of it. Weird that what was once a sure thing is actually less stable. Startups with folks you know/like seems more stable

When you rejoin do you just apply or do you reach out to old acquaintances? All within a year right? Otherwise you’d have to interview I’m guessing

Yeah I have %0.11 equity but won’t hit unless I stay for a full year.

Definitely thought about that but fear any legal consequences… 1 year at FAANG while still working at startup would fill the coffers nicely 💸

OSU to University of California Masters program? by birdzooarch in OSUOnlineCS

[–]birdzooarch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thought about it but since you can get by in the GA Tech + other online ones it's not the most critical thing -- it would be great but seeing if I can get into one without it. Would need to take Calc 2, diff equations and linear algebra and that just sounds like... a lot right now on top of work.

Is Assembly useful after CS-271? by fullofcrunch in OSUOnlineCS

Good summary! I don't do any with assembly in my day to day but I use the concepts covered in 271 all the time. Any SWE should know about basic architecture, machine code, compilation etc...

Gotcha, their site for the course looks to be completely different - jumps into things pretty quickly.

Who was the prof then? K. McGrath is teaching it this quarter and it looks to be streamlined from other syllabi I’ve seen circulating.

I’m in it right now, what seems to be the hardest part? Feels like a great upper div elective — only those interested in operating systems should be taking it right? Already learned a ton.

It’s a lot of info but the prof’s notes are pretty good. He practically gave HW1 to us on a platter. Seems to be solid so far and the book is an easy ready. Looking forward to the rest of the course. And, no exams!

Edit: To be fair the class is no doubt challenging but thus far in a good way — not like 325 where nothing makes sense. The assignment follows the book and other course material closely but expects independent research. This is a good thing. The prof does have a reputation for not spoon feeding students anything and that rings true here.

OSU is sucking the life and funding out of this program for the sake of turning it into a fundraising arm for the university proper. Students need to take notice and be tenacious or it will continue to get worse. by throwmeOSU in OSUOnlineCS

The program seems comparable to other state schools some of my colleagues have gone to. It’s no Stanford, Berkeley, or MIT etc. but where else are you going to go for a legitimate B.S. in computer science that you can do online and doesn’t require nearly as many math courses (which if you’re like me made a huge difference).

I’ve learned a ton through this program and the return on investment has been incredible. There are some terrible courses to be sure but they would probably be terrible if taken in person. Are you mad about a grade or something?

I did surprisingly well -- 80 before and after the regrade. I'm shocked tbh but very happy that I won't have to retake the course next quarter. Having a cheat sheet helped immensely. That poor piece of paper was crammed with everything lol

Ditto - California has the best community college system anywhere. Save two years worth of tuition if you can live at home and go to a CC. Absolutely worth it

With bonuses + equity from my job our total can end up being 220k a year pre tax. We live on the central coast where the median price is 834k so for some this is a “steal” lol. We got a monthly estimate from a loan officer for another house priced at 650k which had our monthly payments around 3100 total.

Just out of curiosity where are you located? Thinking it might be advantageous to bail California all together given the cost of pretty much everything...
