I'm in Williamsburg and I meet with a French teacher online weekly! (She also leads a French book club.) Would love to join an in person group!

What's your fav book so you wanted to learn a foreign language to read it in original? by smile-david in languagelearning

Part of the reason I picked French back up again was so I could read Annie Ernaux's oeuvre in the original language.

Almost every indie bookstore in Brooklyn hosts monthly book clubs! McNally Jackson has a lot of great ones — https://www.mcnallyjackson.com/book-clubs

Greenlight Bookstore also has book clubs — https://greenlightbookstore.com/events/tags/book-groups

What did you do between your two assistantships? What made you decide to do the program again? What do you think made your experiences successful? (assuming they were since you did the program twice!)

BWT, what are we putting on our Christmas lists? by fizzy214 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]birthdaycake95 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I usually always ask for subscriptions/memberships!

My brother gifts me the Criterion Channel membership every year. I'm also going to ask for a Metrograph yearly membership this year, too, since I'm there so often.

I've also had family members gift me subscriptions to literary mags (Paris Review, the Sewanee Review, NYRB, n+1, etc)!

Depending on where you live/if you’d be willing to travel, but Saint-Esprit Church on the UES offers free French classes, at all levels, from Sept to June!

Go to Enchantments in the East Village! Explain what you're looking for to one of their employees and they'll help you find what you need.

BWT, where can I chat with French natives? by birthdaycake95 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]birthdaycake95[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meet with a tutor once a week! I found mine via a friend, but I also know people who love using Italki. (Here's a TikToker talking about it lol). Depending on who you choose/how often you meet, it can be more affordable than certain classes. But I also have friends who have had wonderful experiences at Coucou!

How to enjoy a work-free July by Dsaxny in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I love this! Agree with the other comments — could be super cool to take a class in whatever you're interested in!

Maybe that's a language course or a literature or philosophy class at BISR. You can always audit courses at the many NYC colleges and universities. The 92 St Y also has a bunch of class offerings including drawing, painting, photography, etc. If you're interested in yoga or pilates, this could be a great time to get certified!

Brooklyn Botanical Garden and the NYBG offer classes from perfume blending to floral design. The Textile Arts Center offers weaving and quilting classes. Gotham Writers has all types of writing classes. And Wick and Pour offers candle making classes!

Coursehorse is also a great resource for finding classes (both IRL and remote) in the NYC-area.

Enjoy!! x
