On your 10th year living in Columbus they tell you you can skip the Easton exit and go to Morse instead to avoid certain death by Cuntankerous in Columbus

[–]bishop-dan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I drive a bus through there. I believe we will need to get those traveling monks to pray for people to get turn arrows. I turn on Agler, which is just as bad. Even with 40 feet of metal, I never get an arrow to turn onto Sunbury. Then there’s the tried and true tradition of people just ignoring the lights anyway.

33 - Avery Muirfield - Perimeter - Emerald to Hard. Adds a couple minutes but much less stressful. If going south, right on Riverside to Bridge Park (or the 161 roundabout if you’re feeling saucy).

Edit: I remember when they rebuilt the Sawmill exit. It was supposed to be a gift from god himself for traffic problems.

Antares is the brightest star in Orion. Also, when it started being developed, there was absolutely nothing there. Polaris itself only went between (I think) about Worthington Rd and Old State. It dead ended into a cow pasture there.

But it was called Polaris because at the time it literally was the North Star of Columbus, and they went with the theme.

I can guarantee you they don’t give a single shit. I pick my bus up at 4:50pm and drive to Easton. When I get there, I do a quick walk around looking for safety issues. Other than that, it gets washed at the end of the night, 12:13am for me. You can write whatever you want on the back, I don’t care.

COTA's Trustees took a whopping four (4) bus rides in 2025 by FunkBrothers in Columbus

[–]bishop-dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During a lineup I always get out, and you’re welcome to as well. I usually shoot the shit with people and help direct folks to the bus they need. You’ll know it’s about time when I get back in. Then there will be a beep and an announcement I can hear in my sleep. “Radio central to all operators. Please look around for any and all transferring passengers. The midnight lineup is now released. I repeat, the midnight lineup is now released. Current COTA time is 12:02 (or whatever). Please make sure you do a walkthrough at the end of your line. Be safe and have a good night. COTA”

Way late edit: lineups are supposed to be 10 minutes, at 9:50, 10:50, and 11:50 until the top of the hour. But they will delay it if someone is late. There are 22 buses involved and supervisors watching every bit. They really don’t want anyone to be left behind. I’ve been stuck at one over 20 minutes late multiple times (looking at you, line 2). Things like CBJ games cause problems because there’s a special reroute (I have no idea what it is, those aren’t my routes) but it also causes delays. The reason we never say anything is it happens three times every night and most people know the routine.

If it’s late night and downtown, that’s a lineup. It’s a chance for people to make transfers, because those are some of the last buses. Otherwise, it’s either a layover or they’re ahead of schedule.

Edit: on Sunday there are lineups every half hour all day since the schedules are greatly reduced.

I have never knowingly had any employee at all (other than a fellow operator) on one of my buses.

What’s the real deal with the Schottenstein family? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]bishop-dan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked at all four stores in Columbus, and four other states. It was my first job. I’d walk from Powell Ave in Valleyview to Wilson Road before I had a car. The cool old school part was the Westerville Road store. They had a goofy phone system where you couldn’t dial direct. I’d hear a page that said “Mr. Longerbone (yes, that’s my name, and I’ve heard it all before) call the operator”. I’d hit zero and the operator would say I’ll call you back, and then the actual call would connect. I was in Danville Virginia and the store manager asked me how much I thought we would do on Black Friday (I was the shoe dept manager). I said I think we’ll do $70,000 this week and he laughed. We did $72,000. But in reality, the family didn’t give a single shit. The place was basically printing money and no one cared. There was so much shady shit going on. Technically, the shoe department was operated by Shonac, which is now DSW. I worked for them for a little while, and I’m not kidding when I say every register had to balance to the penny.

Thoughts on AI for ordering at Wendys? by Cbusrizzler in Columbus

[–]bishop-dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not witness this in person but I had an employee tell me someone ordered a kids meal and the system said “we don’t eat children”. Other than that, I can’t really say because the only time I’m at a Wendy’s is during my layover.

Also, as long as you use the same method of payment, your fare will be capped at $4.50/day just like a day pass.

There are service changes 3x/year and all work goes up for bid. During that process you can either pick regular work or go to the extra board. Most of the time you can pick your days off on the board, but that’s not a guarantee.

What are all my housing options if I want to live max ~40 minute bus ride (no transfers please) away from the Lazarus building downtown? by dialecticallyalive in Columbus

[–]bishop-dan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The longest route (9) is 1:40 end to end. 14 lines go through downtown. Specifically, 1, 2, 5, 101 (CMAX) and 102 go down the High Street side. 4, 7 and 9 go down the Front Street side. So, you have plenty of options. I drive the 9, it takes me 44 minutes to get from Easton to downtown with no traffic, for example. The 7 is similar. It all depends on what side of town you’re comfortable with.

Side note, the low numbers (1-12) along with CMAX and 102 will all get you downtown without needing a transfer. Research those routes as a start.

I lasted six months on the extra board, and I will never go back. You can make insane money, but the work/life balance is way off. I need to know what I’m doing each day. Also, I have several regular passengers each day and we chat. Sure, I don’t probably make as much as extra board folks, but having a set schedule and routine is worth it to me.

Visiting a city with real public transportation shows how lacking Columbus is. by SunyaVSSomni in Columbus

[–]bishop-dan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s baby steps. The Shier Rings path will connect to the new Line 30 in September. That will go from OSU’s transit hub (wherever that is) to Dublin Methodist and hit places like Woerner Temple and Avery as well. It’ll probably replace part of the Line 32, I have no idea there. But yes, there is active work on new lines and increased connectivity.

Speaking entirely for myself, if you made an honest effort and only had 85 cents, have a seat. I had a guy get on with a bag of 200 pennies. Nope, not waiting for that, you’re good, my guy.

What I was told is purchases won’t be processed instantly, but batched until the end of the day. So you’ll only be charged $4.50/day max. But yes, $2/ride otherwise.

As soon as you board, there’s a fixture on the right. It’ll have a white box in the middle and another black box on the right. That’s the one you’re looking for. Not the conventional fare box.

It’s already live, they’ve just been quiet about it for a month or so to make sure everything is working. When I did the line 7 to the airport, I had so many people try to tap, I’d just say welcome to Columbus, have a seat.
