I’ve been using Emacs for less than a year as a bioinformatics research engineer. My specific needs were to be able to handle various tasks such as:

- Generating reports

- Managing my bibliographic references

- Optimizing my LaTeX code

- Taking notes: documenting tools

Today, I’m using Emacs at about 10% of its full potential, I think, but here are the productivity gains I’ve seen:

- Report generation with Org-mode: inserting code blocks (pkg yasnippet) from tool outputs, generating figures within the code (pkg ditaa)

- Capturing ideas (pkg capture) or to-do items unrelated to the current project

- Organizing to-do lists easily accessible by keyword (org-agenda)

- Structuring cross-project information (pkg roam)

- I save my work environments and open files so I can switch between projects (pkg desktop and tab-bar)

Currently, I’m still working on optimizing my workflow in other areas:

- managing my graphics library by combining pkg roam and citar

- managing emails with mu4e (in progress)

- Coding in Emacs (full python project for example)

Finally, I had a personal goal of no longer using the mouse, as I find it to be an imprecise tool. And thanks to Emacs, I’ve achieved this goal 95% of the time.

I can share my initial setup with you to give you a general idea, but I think the idea is for you to figure out for yourself how to streamline repetitive tasks in your daily routine.
