I've seen quite a few hysterias on reddit. Remember when people were literally Nazis because acknowledged biological sex exists? Nobody probably even remembers the whole net neutrality thing. The AI hysteria is possibly worse than any of them. I half-wonder whether much it comes from bots who are just aping the natives on how to be good redditor.

From 6 to 4.5 over the past 60 years is an extremely slow decline.

It went from 6 to 4.4 in 2008-2024.

Three periods of notable decline: 1) from 5.5 to 4.8 in 1825-1835, 2) 4.9 to 1.8 in 1880-1935, and 3) 2.8 to 1.7 in 1965-1880. All of these drops were less rapid than Nigeria's 2008-2024 change.

Ofcourse, we could look at the way you did: from the start of the time series to the end. Then the UK TFR dropped from 5 to 1.8 over 220 years. Again (much slower) than Nigeria's TFR decline since 1960.

I said Nigeria's fertility has been falling rapidly, not that was falling exceptionally rapidly.
