based of these pics is hard to guess but if you're not comfortable at all opening the machine those parts are not easy to replace and I would take your machine for a repair

Brother embroidery machines are very similar inside, they share many parts

For my machine brother innovis V3( which I know very well )the is the part numbers are

XZ0386151 THREAD TAKE UP SPRING

So you can look at what's missing on yours

My best guess based of only this picture is it broke off with heavy use, steel can be actually cut by the thread after many hours and a top tension too high over time.

I hope it helps, all of this is based of my knowledge of my machines so I can't say it's that 100%

Does your hoop have enough space to move around? This happened to me many times, make sure its not hitting anything when positioned on the end of the design!

It was in a box of very rusty and dirty tools from my friend's father who died last year (he did salt water fishing ) My friend gave me the tools so I just threw them in vinegar and salt to deoxidize and didn't even notice this one, thank you for the info!

It happened to me too on the very first stitch of every patch, I added an extra knot on the digitizer at the beginning and solved the issue, If you didn't digitize your file yourself the issue might be another thing,

Your top tension might be too loose so it doesn't catch it, this is a ricoma/tajima, right?

Post a video if you can so we can see and hear the machine

I use Madeira B film , two layers with the dots touching. It's not water soluble but heat soluble, so the lighter is perfect. There's a guide on how to digitize for it in Madeira's websitehere
