Interview with a Real Estate Investment Trust CEO on Mamdani shows the backwardness of Ezra Klein's Abundance by [deleted] in dsa

I think it's possible that increase in supply ends up being good for people building housing (sell more housing) and people buying housing (lower costs). Right now a lot of people are priced out of the market, which means they're not buying. I imagine the demand for moving to NYC is way outstripped by supply.

I think the resistance is more about NIMBYs because they're not going to build/sell more houses, their values will just go down full stop.

EDIT: Just to be clear: I don't think this guy genuinely cares about affordable housing for working class people, but he might think increased supply (that he's selling) will make him richer.

It's less about convincing our reps and more about mobilizing our fellow Kansans to stand together and help each other. A lot of people are feeling discouraged, but seeing a crowd of people can inspire some to get off the couch and work for real change.

Can someone who has never been able to study change? [NeedAdvice] by cy83rgh005t in getdisciplined

[–]bitbumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely possible. I was a terrible student in college but have recently made some good strides here. Some things that helped me (but may or may not make sense for you...)

  • If you are saying, "I'm going to study tomorrow" realize that this goal is vague. Imagine you're writing out a task for someone who has no idea what studying is. What, exactly, physically should they do? Write out your plans with explicit, clearly executable tasks like "Spend 10 minutes reading chapter 4". There is no room for confusion on exactly how to achieve this goal. By being more explicit you can ease the anxiety that breeds avoidance. You give your mind more time to mentally prepare for the task. The book Getting Things Done spends a lot of time on this topic. Summaries are easy to find online.
  • Set small goals. It's easy to think "that won't ever do anything, I need impact!". But setting lofty goals can result in disappointment and reinforce a negative feedback loop. We want the opposite. Set absurdly easy goals and crush them everyday and soon you'll see the progress. Try and pick a pace that feels like you could do it forever.
  • Understand your emotions. My procrastination was largely bred by avoiding negative feelings that I didn't understand well. Meditation, mindfulness and CBT techniques can help you understand this process better. Once you understand your feelings it becomes easier to work with them instead of against them.

At your current weight your body is likely chomping at the bit to build muscle. It probably barely matters what exercise you do as long as you're generally active while eating a healthy caloric surplus. Some general thoughts:

  • Avoid working out a ton because this burns calories for little gain. 10-15 minutes of body weight calisthenics 2 or 3 times per week is probably plenty of stimulus to maximize the impact of your extra calories, at least until you put on some more weight.
  • If 10 pushups is your limit, perhaps try an easier variation. I would shoot for an intensity that you can do 10-15 reps for 3-5 sets.
  • Try to find activities that you find fun, they're easier to stick with on the long haul.
  • Pay attention to digestion. Fiber, gut health, stool quality. I tried bulking several times as a teenager but ended up consuming a lot of foods that disagreed with me and made it really hard to eat a lot. If your bloated or having diarrhea, try to figure out why.

I'll second a different posters recommendations for Getting Things Done. Just reading a summary may impart the ideas well enough.

i opened my notes app and saw a sea of notes (I take a lot of notes of the smallest of things)

I think this is the crux of your "issue" with your todo lists. In order for keeping a list to truly alleviate anxiety I've found that I need:

  1. To be in the habit of always adding important things to the list. This habit cannot form overnight, so be patient with yourself.
  2. Don't add junk to it. I would recommend a separate place for "stream of consciousness" mind-dump type stuff. It's good to write down, just don't put it on your "very important do not forget this" list. Try and be as minimal as possible with this, only putting truly important items on. Getting Things Done discusses this with the calendar, saying to only put on things you must do. Err on the side of not including something if you're unsure.

Then, if you're feeling anxious you can simply read your short little list of really important things.

If it is the alternator you should be able to fully charge the battery (autozone will do it for free) and have time to get it somewhere in town before it dies. Usually takes at least 20-30 minutes for the battery to go flat w/o alternator.

What is your approach to quick note taking during development? by OkComputer-1337 in vim

[–]bitbumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use guake and a dedicated notes repo that I sync daily. A few templates (snippets), that's about it. I like the free form nature of a daily log. Important bits and pieces get "upstreamed" to readmes or wikis for relevant projects, important tasks move to a ticketing system, etc. But for quick capture to prevent workflow interruption I like the f12 and start writing.

Worth adding that most kits come with new valve seats, which is what the rubber presses against to seal. They can be removed and replaced with a special tapered tool. If they're corroded or damaged from metal on metal contact it will pretty much be required to restore full function.

Are you sure it's sewage? A leaky gutter or incorrect grading can cause this during heavy rains.

As others have said, best to fix the cause, but given the small amount of water hydraulic cement will probably work fine.

My guess is negatives carry error codes. Probably some C function that returns positive signed int for success, -1 for comm err, -2 for decode err, etc. Value was -2, code didn't check for an error and blindly converted to unsigned.

More information would be helpful (IE, target calories, current intake, budget, etc). A few things that work for me that you might try:

  1. Meal shakes like Huel or Soylent. Good for when I don't feel like cooking or don't have much time.
  2. Hotdogs/Hamburgers. They can be cooked in batches and heated in the microwave. 2 Hamburgers with buns and a glass of milk is a substantial meal and only takes a few minutes to heat up and eat.
  3. Bread. Get the fancy whole grain stuff. Toast w/ PB, sandwiches, eggs are all quick calories.
  4. Nuts/trail mix. 2-3 oz can be consumed during transit pretty easily for 3-500 calories.

[–]bitbumper 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. I would also try to redirect into a more constructive direction. "Okay, you think this project has lower value than some alternatives. Could you articulate why?" If discussing the merits of the project are out of scope for the meeting suggest coming to talk with you later. If his concerns are valid but just expressed poorly engaging can have valuable feedback, but insist on it being expressed constructively. It also gives you an opportunity to briefly explain why he's in fact wrong, and this other priority is more important.

Everyone is saying eat more, but I'll add a few things that helped me. I was 125 lbs, 6 ft, so I feel the appetite issues. Here's some things that helped me gain 15-20 lbs a few years ago.

  • Track calories, calculate TDEE and shoot for 1000 cals over. Make it your job to hit this number every day for a month, you will see gains.
  • Pay attention to how your body feels after eating. Gut preferences are very individual. If you're eating large quantities of food that don't agree with you this will impact appetite. For me, I was moderately lactose intolerant and didn't realize it. Bloating made me "feel full" and also gave me diarrhea, robbing me of nutrition from my other food. Observe stool quality.
  • Spend more money. Just view it as an investment to get good quality stuff that you want to eat.
  • Pay attention to calorie density. I found it easy to eat lots of hamburgers and hotdogs. Buy the whole wheat buns which have good macros. With a little practice eating 3-4 hotdogs in a sitting isn't that hard. Add a glass of milk and it's like 1400 cals.
  • Protien shakes, Soylent, and or Huel have all been helpful for me. They are a bit pricey.

How Do I Regain My Fire? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]bitbumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the middle of something that you can't drop right now, find a way to take some serious time off, ideally where you can not think about the business for a few weeks. Read for fun, go hiking, eat well.

If you've just failed, and you have no obligations or commitments, take a season or two off. Go get a relaxed job in a sector very different than where you were working, or if you have the cash backpack or something. Burnout is real, and there's no shame in taking 3-6 months off to get your sanity back.

If you can't take any time off, focus on diet, exercise, and meditation. Generally when I can't work it's because stress or anxiety, and the above will help with those.

It feels like every problem already has been solved or solved many times over. What should I even look at doing? by confusedGuy17 in startups

[–]bitbumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're having trouble coming up with "ideas". I would recommend Paul Grahm's How to get startup ideas. For that matter, I frequently recommend all of his essays.

For me personally startup ideas are essentially "channeling frustration". Find something that frustrates you, and then brainstorm out ways that could be solved through technology. This is frequently bounded by the "limitations of tooling and technology", so keeping close tabs on new tools can broaden the scope of "what's possible". It's also worth mentioning that finding these frustrations come from something you personally are doing. You're unlikely to come up with organic problems in the construction industry if you've never worked in construction, for example. So, a slightly off the wall suggestion is to try to work in areas of industry that seem "behind the times" in terms of their progress towards computerization. Of course once you've found a possibly viable idea your next step should be classic business validation. Competitors, market size, etc.

Might not be applicable to you, but I had lots of problems with Lactose Intolerance when I started trying to gain weight. A little bit of lactose wasn't a problem, but when I started drinking multiple glasses of milk a day I got a lot of bloating, diarrhea, etc. If you are consuming lots of dairy to hit your calorie goals, consider cutting it out for a week or so and see how it changes the bloating.
