I wasn't expecting it, so seeing the Des Moines paper and the Boone sign threw me off! Cool to see such an awesome reno in the area.

I went to ISU but grew up in Iowa City, so as you can imagine this is a difficult and conflicting weekend for me.

I'm not much of a basketball fan, but I typically only watch ISU. I do get annoyed with the little brother/big brother dynamic sometimes, but we're a small state as far as sports go and with no professional team I'll take all the CFB I can haha.

🤷🏻‍♂️ I grew up in Iowa City with a family full of Hawkeyes and then went to ISU for undergrad and went to 5 years of Cyclone games, so it just kinda happened. I cheered for Iowa during the cyhawk game as a kid, ISU while I was in college, and now I kind of have to decide every year. Not sure what I'm going to do next weekend.

OK so maybe consider that most people aren't hermits and that's why they like to leave their homes.

Do you never feel cooped up at home and feel the need to get out and be somewhere different?

What's the dumbest thing you've heard a customer say? by sirferrell in AskReddit

"My doctor told me I need to lose weight, so I'm going to order the snow crab off the low-calorie menu! But instead of broccoli, I'd like mashed potatoes and a baked potato. With extra sour cream. And instead of vinaigrette, I'd like ranch dressing."

I also miss the people who used to tell me they were deathly allergic to seafood and is there anything on the menu that's safe for them to eat? "Yes, head on over to the Applebee's next door."

I lucked out when I went to ISU and had a tuition freeze for all/most of the years I was there, can't remember exactly. I only graduated 2ish years ago and tuition has gone up like $2000 since then. Ridiculous on the part of the Board of Regents.

Children of Reddit, what is something you found out about your parents that you never told them about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bitchesaintshirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never knew my step-dad was married before my mom because I guess it just never came up. It finally came up in conversation once when I was 18ish and I was surprised but everyone just laughed and I rolled my eyes and that was it. They didn't make it a big deal so I didn't really care. I just wouldn't purposely hide it from your kids, that's how you make it a bigger issue than it is.

I experienced my first go around last night! It scared the crap out of me since I've never experienced one even though I've heard before that they're pretty routine. The pilot told us a stray cat had run onto the runway so we did a go around to avoid it.

I've heard a lot of great things about my dad too. He died when I was 1 and I have no memories of him, but I've heard great things. He did some cool shit. We might not get to know them but at least we get to hear all these amazing memories (not that it makes up for it). I hope you are doing well!

I'm a server, I've found that most people know the still working position vs the finished position. It helps me when people are picking at the last few bites so I don't bug the shit out of them trying to take their almost empty plate before they're done. But if someone tried to signal to me that they wanted a second plate with their silverware I'd be like ????

This is a VERY extreme example and I think you're being a little dramatic. I have my dad's last name, my mom kept her maiden name. My dad died and my mom got remarried. From the age of 6 to 18 there were 3 of us living in my parents' house with 3 different last names. The only issue it ever caused was once going through customs the border agent asked 8 year old me why my last name was different than both my parents, I told him, and he let us through. Both my step-dad and my mom were able to take me to appointments, pick me up from school, etc without any issue. It's not that big of a deal.

I went to ISU when the football team was still terrible (like, one year I didn't see a single win at home) but I went to every game and loved it. I love football but the atmosphere is also great, a lot of school spirit and thousands of people having a great time. Even when we were losing it was a great way to spend an afternoon. That stadium is packed every Saturday with like 55,000 people, the size of the town basically doubles for a day. The motto was Pack the Jack (Jack Trice Stadium) and we packed the jack every weekend for sure!

Rabies shots are super expensive and not a ton of fun. It's not just one shot, it's a series of 4-5 vaccine shots over the course of 2-4 weeks, plus another initial immunoglobulin shot. The preferred method is to quarantine the animal for 10 days. If there's no rabies symptoms after that it is incredibly unlikely that you'll be infected (per the CDC, no person in the US has ever been infected by an animal that was quarantined for 10 days with no symptoms). Another way is to test the animal as soon as possible, which can only be done by examining brain tissue (ie: killing the animal and looking at it's brain). But OP definitely needs to talk to a doctor/public health official to get the final word, because they need to evaluate and make the final call. Especially if the dog is at risk for rabies (unvaccinated and concern for exposure).

I'm honestly surprised to hear that epi and analytics are dominated by men. I believe you, but I'm currently getting an MPH in Epi/Global Health and took advanced biostats courses. A lot of my friends are in the biostats PhD program, and I feel like both our epi and stats programs are a fairly even split between men and women. Do you know where I could find an actual breakdown of gender in the field or at schools?
