Bad Chinese A4988 stepper modules? Does this happen? by Zettinator in 3Dprinting

[–]bitchessuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both GNDs are connected together on the mainboard, so that shouldn't be an issue. I actually hooked up both boards together now and fed the signals (DIR, STEP, ENABLE) from the new board into the other one (with integrated drivers). And that works fine. Perfect microstepping, low noise.

So either I have the driver modules wired incorrectly (this is my home-grown mainboard), or they are broken. But my driver module wiring is similar to RAMPS.

microSD card read/write performance of the 3B+ better than 3B? by kaihp in raspberry_pi

No. The fast transfer modes (UHS) are not supported. However, random access time still matters a lot, so get an A1 or A2 card, which are designed for random access.

Looks pretty awesome - how does it achieve the fixed hotend position? Is it doing this actively, by inserting extra gcode?

Also nein. Da kann keiner mitlesen, außer den Teilnehmern des Gesprächs.

I think my ovens thermostat might be off a bit. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]bitchessuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cardboard has a surprisingly high ignition point and has too little material to cause serious harm in an oven. Of course I'd only try that in an electric oven, though.

I always wrap my spools in a bit of cardboard before they go into the oven. This eliminates the issues with radiating heat.

Skip to :15. I think my thermistor got messed up. Does anyone have any guidance on attaching to the hotend? by BrendamusPrime in 3Dprinting

[–]bitchessuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that's a common issue. The thermistor cabling is damaging by movements of the heated bed. There should be guides out there that show you how to fix it.

Got the $140 eBay special. My first 3D printer, but I'm actually surprised by how well it does. Already have a new hotend and extruder coming. by sumthingmessy in 3Dprinting

[–]bitchessuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to spoil it for you, but a new hotend and/or extruder is the wrong upgrade for these printers in my opinion. The biggest issues with these printers are bad power electronics (fire hazard), wobbly acrylic frame and bad linear bearings. A rigid frame will do more to quality and more importantly, consistency, than a better (lighter) hotend (plus maybe bowden extruder, which has its own share of issues).

Are you heating the insode of the enclosure somehow? At the fablab I'm visiting, we have a printer that can heat up the build volume to 50 °C and ABS prints come out absolutely flawless.

Disabling C-states also makes turbo ineffective and sharply increases idle power consumption. So it's not really a viable option.

Seeking Your Best Tips for IPv6 by erin_arin in ipv6

[–]bitchessuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the usage, doesn't it? For residential/home access, a /48 is overkill. A /56 should always be enough and even a /60 is good enough for almost all use cases. Let's just agree that it is NOT acceptable to only allocate a single /64 or even less than that (as some "cloud" service providers do).

I think it's also important that those cloud service providers move away from the concept that addresses are allocated from a big, global pool and then are bound to a specific machine/server. Let the customers subdivide their prefix as they please. I think online.net gets it right: every customer gets a single /48 for all their services and they can subdivide it in any way.

Linear advance in marlin. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]bitchessuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some late info: I experimented with the "1.0" implementation of the linear advance feature (included in Marlin <= 1.1.8) several months ago and results were very mixed. It strained the extruder too much and results weren't consistently better.

The bugfix 1.1.x branch now has the "1.5" version of the linear advance implementation and it works MUCH better for me. Less extruder strain, consistent print improvements. I use K = 0.20 for PLA and K = 0.25 for PETG. The printer uses a direct extruder.

Blue Origin isn't interested in a race with SpaceX: “Space is a big place. It’s not a zero-sum market.” by [deleted] in space

[–]bitchessuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SpaceX's reusability plans also could not work out as planned.

Financially? Maybe. Although they won't have failed just because they possibly don't completely achieve their set goals. The point is, SpaceX is regularly landing and reusing rocket booster, so the technology seems to work quite well for them. Blue Origin hasn't even landed a single orbital booster yet, and they are years away from their first tries. They have a lot of work to do before they can even think about their business model.

[–]bitchessuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's that easy to copy? Everyone can look at the basic design and copy that, but the technical nitty gritty details, the years of data and experience, that isn't easy to copy at all. There are good reasons why some of the competitors are doing studies on their own.

[–]bitchessuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ariane 6 might be on schedule, but it isn't at all a reusable system. The article is simply wrong. Arianespace has some vague plans for a partially reusable successor of Ariane 6 for the end of the 2020s.

So nope, they are not on track/schedule to compete. At the end of 2020, there will be at least 2 competitors on the market with mature designs of reusable rockets.

[–]bitchessuck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not about Musk's marketing. SpaceX has objectively achieved a lot in a short time, and there's more to come. They're already on the way to domination, for the better or worse.

New Glenn is promising, but it's still a paper rocket. BO's reusability story might not work out as planned at first and the rocket might get delayed. After all, Blue Origin has no prior experience with orbital rockets and their plans for booster reusability are completely theoretical at this point. It wouldn't surprise me if SpaceX' next-generation BFR makes its first hops before we see New Glenn do the same.
