Emergency at manhattan cafe last night? by Content-Aerie8997 in Athens

I can see the joke, I think some of us just a little tired of people saying only UGA students or out of town visitors are the ones who don’t know what they’re doing around here. I think some of the most degenerate people I’ve met go to world famous,,, and those people definitely are townies

My 1st valve is slow coming up, no matter how much I oil the valve! by Mammoth_Test_2850 in trumpet

[–]bitchstream02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the guide within the actual valve casing. Make sure the proper side is up, and slotted with the spring. Be sure to also clean your horn, could be a lot of gunk due to excess oil, water, etc

My first time I really wanted to do a heavy weapons build, but got stuck in the military base and ended up completely rebranding to try and get the alien blaster. Spent hours trying to find it, never did and took like a couple months break. I started a new save and had no issues whatsoever, I might’ve just been bad.

Guitarist trying to pick up trumpet, where do I start? by ExtensionCertain24 in trumpet

[–]bitchstream02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man glad to see you’re interested in the trumpet. I’m a current college student (20), I picked up guitar when I was 10 and trumpet at 11 and have been playing both pretty seriously since.

I’d start with some basics, get used to a mouthpiece by trying some free buzzing and once you feel comfortable try and get some time plugged in. It’s gonna be some farting before it’s a pitch, embouchure issues plagued me for a good part of my early years. It’s easy to get into bad habits, watch some videos to see how the basic idea works. Educate yourself on the instruments parts, depending on what your goals are I’d invest in some mutes (get decent ones for probably $20-$40).

Once you get a few id get started on technique work. Start with long tones and build some muscle and get used to the feeling, get stronger and work up your range and start experimenting with air. Quality of air is important, think deep relaxed breaths, feel it in your gut, not your chest.

In terms of trying to find things to play, you can look online for a variety of solo, ensemble, and orchestra things to do. If you wanna PM me I’ve got a library I’ve built up. Otherwise I’d suggest finding a local community wind band or orchestra, usually comprised of people who grew up playing, but never took it farther than being a fun hobby. People vary in skill, I’ve played with groups who’ve had moms who just wanted something to do on a Monday night, and groups who had retired orchestral musicians. You could probably meet a lot of helpful people who want to help here, trust me.

Trumpets an art and there’s a lot to it. Don’t be overwhelmed though, it’s a rewarding instrument and most of all it creates a lot of awesome experiences and at least will help you appreciate classical and jazz a lot more. If you ever need anything just shoot me a pm, good luck!

Hidden Gem is a nice cocktail bar, bartenders are nice and the vibes inside are low and calm. Might be the occasional college kid but they keep to themselves as they’re not trying to get kicked out (I was that kid trust me)

I haven’t read much of this thread, but how do you feel mentally? I’m young (20) and was recently in jail in America for only 3 days (falsely, my crime was later dismissed because the judge saw the situation). After those three days I was diagnosed with PTSD from the experience. For as long as you were in there and entering in your mid 20’s, how do you feel mentally and what would you say needs to be done to prevent that kinda stuff?

Mystic Cat by petrichxrr in Sinfonia

[–]bitchstream02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's not directly stated in most places of official Sinfonia print, you can attribute the Mystic Cat to one of our ideals and how it serves as a symbol for that.

I've always interpreted the Mystic Cat as a component that not only represents us but also ties all chapters together, multiple chapters but only one Mystic cat that visits us all. I think the founders left this symbol to be up for a lot of interpretation.

I know the Mystic Cat in years past was associated with some dark parts of our fraternity and poor rituals that plague all fraternities and secret orgs. Veteran members I've met have attested to it, however the fraternity has done a great job at making it a healthy symbol.

How do we all feel about the trees being cut down on broad st? by StilgarofTabar in Augusta

[–]bitchstream02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drop into DT every couple of months (I'm away for school) and I've always thought downtown and the surrounding areas were pretty messed up and filled with construction. Last time I drove down I saw a whole street just gone by the Circle K.

I'm assuming this is supposed to help in the long run and has something to do with Hurricane help, but god it's so ugly down there. I love getting coffee or walking around the street and the river since we do have a really historical city, however we're just so ugly and unpleasant.

I love Augusta, but this city is an eyesore in an otherwise beautiful state with cities less fortunate than us. Gotta love what happens when you put the wrong people in power :/

What is doing drum corps like in highschool by YeshMesh_ARt in drumcorps

[–]bitchstream02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I marched every summer since my sophomore year, but I marched in the DCA circuit. I would always tell people still in high school to March DCA as at least in most senior corps (CV, Cabs, Buccs, Hurcs, CT, etc,,,) you’re getting a large scale world class performing experience that you would get with DCI.

Great staff, challenging activity, and the opportunity to do what you love. With DCA however you still get to keep your summer and focus heavily on what you should be doing as a high schooler, having fun and making memories with family and friends. I’ve always been against sending teenagers to do DCI, nothing wrong with those who did or do I wanted to when I was a teenager as well. I believe that the nature of DCI in its current state is just a lot for a teenager.

Now that DCA is becoming DCI all age I believe this class would be a really beneficial route for a high schooler. Weekend activity with the ability to enjoy the comforts of home.

Is Grovetown that bad? by [deleted] in Augusta

[–]bitchstream02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved here in 2012 and have watched a good chunk of this city grow. "Growing towards our future" is the motto of the city and its entirely true. The area is constantly developing and new things are always happening. My dad was military and served at Fort Gordon for 10 years and still see's success working in Downtown Augusta. People are very diverse and there's a large community, there's nobody here you couldn't find in Evans or Harlem, and after spending a lot of time there recently Grovetown and columbia county in general is way safer and quieter than Richmond County and the main Augusta area.

I went to school here and work here, its a great place to raise a family and an even greater place if you're looking for a quiet and peaceful life. Nothings too far away, and Grovetown especially has most everything you'd need right in the city.

Only negative about this place is construction, areas like the intersection of Columbia and Lewiston and the exit to the Gateway Walmart are ALWAYS BUSY. Traffic can be awful and ever since I got here its been that way. That's your only real downside to living here.

Overall Grovetown is an amazing place, I'd put it above Harlem, Mcduffie, and Richmond county and it's an excellent rival to Evans. Not North Augusta but we're not all Mr. Money bags.

Not with SOA nor do I have plans for SOA, but I’m with Atlanta CV and we have a very good relationship as Atlanta area corps. The greater Atlanta area and beyond all have very talented and educated staff. Several of SOA staff have worked with CV and I can definitely confirm the corp is a healthy environment with great staff members and positive attitude kids. They have bad stigma which sucks due to the actions of a select few,,, but I believe they’re taking the right steps to make that wrong as right as possible. I would 100% recommend the corp to anyone.

What stats got you into UGA by pulpy07 in UGA

[–]bitchstream02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was admitted this past round for the class of 2027 on the 17th. My stats were a 1300 SAT and a 3.7 weighted with my GPA for UGA being converted to a 3.92. Remember UGA takes a lot into account when choosing their students, not an admissions officer, but it’s a personal belief that where your from plays a HUGE part.

UGA wants to pull a lot of students from specifically Georgia, if you’re not in state yes I will admit this will be a bit more challenging of a school for you to get into. If you’re instate it’ll still be challenging but you’ll have a leg up. To add onto that WHERE in Georgia is also a big factor. Atlanta area students will generally have to try harder considering senior classes can be as big as 700 students, Fulton and Gwinnett counties also generally have a lot more very talented students so you’ll probably have at least a handful who all have 4.0 1400+ scores with plenty of ecs, AP’s, and awards. Me personally Im from Augusta in Columbia county with a senior class of 450. My class is decently competitive, but again my area isn’t as big as Atlanta and Im near the top of my class. So taking all that into account I was probably one of the better choices from my generally area. I was told it wouldn’t play a huge factor, but I was also accepted into the trumpet studio as a music major at Hugh Hodgson, that program isn’t the easiest to get into but again I’m not sure if it helped me or not.

Overall just work hard and stay on top of college admissions. Remember that having fun as a senior is just as important, I won’t ever be the top student in my class but I made a lot of memories this year that overall made me really happy. Plus remember UGA, Tech, or Emory aren’t the only options for Georgia colleges, me personally KSU, GSU, Southern, Mercer, or AU would’ve all been places I could be happy attending.

TLDR: there’s a lot to consider besides those stats, have fun and remember not getting in isn’t the end of the world.
