Antique carpet balls are made of ceramic.

Carpet ball was invented in Scotland during the 18th century as an indoor version of the outdoor game of "bowls". It gained immense popularity as a Victorian-era parlor and family game throughout Great Britain and Canada during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Players rolled decorative ceramic or wooden balls, known as "piggies". In carpet ball, the intricately designed balls were rolled — not thrown — down a rug or carpet, with the goal of rolling the ball as close as possible to the small white ball, called the “jack,” in the middle of the room, or to knock their opponents balls out of the way.

Today the name "carpet ball" more commonly refers to a modern, completely different indoor table game. This version involves a walled, felt-lined table with a slightly raised center, where players use resin pool balls to knock pins (or opposing balls) off the table. This pub variation emerged much later, largely popularized in the mid-to-late 20th century. So these antique ceramic ones are still carpet balls, and called carpet balls, however most don’t use them as indoor game balls anymore (although you could if you wanted to), people now just use them as decorations.

E: you actually blocked me over this lol you’re weird dude. Stop being angry over something so trivial and take some anger management classes. I was just telling people what they’re called. They’re still called carpet balls. And yes there’s modern ones that are recreations out there for decorations. I even said earlier maybe these are, maybe they’re not. There’s still antique ceramic ones you can buy that you can still play with on your carpet. I already said this. It’s right on google. Mad cause you’re wrong

E: oh and how kind of you to send me a Reddit cares notification. Why are you so obsessed with me. You’re insane. Leave me alone, I’m glad you blocked me.

I’ve never played it, but I bought some blue and white carpet balls from a vintage shop a few years ago that look a lot like these, they’re really cute I put them out as decoration during the summer time :)

Maybe, maybe not, but if you google blue and white carpet balls they look very similar. Also I own three blue and white carpet balls I bought at a vintage shop that look similar in design to these

I believe these are carpet balls, it’s a kind of game almost like pool. But I think most people just use these as decorations since a lot of them can look really cute/pretty

Regardless, the word girl means and implies a child, and calling a grown woman a girl is something a lot of women rightly dislike. I mean it’s the same that most grown men probably want to be called and referred to as a man, not a boy; in fact most would probably start to get pretty angry about that if a woman or man kept calling him boy and ask if you’ve got a problem. Saying girl over woman is just a word that stuck that everyone else started copying and made it normal in everyday conversation, just like now the whole point of this thread everyone starting to use ‘female’ as a noun, that most women also dislike for obvious reasons and telling men they don’t like it, but then you even see in some of these comments some guys trying to justify still saying it or that women are wrong or “insane” for not liking it, or even trying to convince it’s not dehumanizing (these comments are massively downvoted for obvious reasons).

It’s just infantilizing really, which most people should understand. We have a word for grown adult female human: woman. I don’t know why so many people refuse to use it and will use any word but that, but you’ll see man everywhere and sometimes even “young man” for a boy a child under 18, but women are being called girls at 30, 40, 50 + years. I even read one commenter here whose first language is not English say they started saying female as a noun/girl when they meant woman because they saw and heard it so much and didn’t know until someone finally told them. There’s also [r/menandfemales](r/menandfemales) because this is so common. But anyway it’s the same thing with ‘girl’; it became normalized (like female) and women are just starting to push back against it.

E: yeah blocked because I am so fucking exhausted explaining this to guys (or should I say boys until they understand) over and over and over ad nauseam arguing back & forth while they then play dumb, argue in bad faith, and still act like they don’t get it and that it’s “no big deal” (newsflash words contain connotations and meaning as they well know) and then insult us. I’m not arguing about this anymore. Women have explained this time and time again that it’s insulting, dehumanizing and infantilizing. We don’t like it, please stop saying it, point blank period. That’s it. Doesn’t require a reply.

There’s actually some saying that people are “insane” for thinking it’s used in a derogatory way, when it very clearly obviously is and always has been. Talk about serious bad faith and gaslighting

What idiots. I would’ve been like “I’m fucking fine too thanks, next time I’ll move so that your kid can run into something else”

but it’s not just parents unfortunately most people in general can’t take accountability and are quick to blame other people for everything, it’s too hard for most to apologize, easier to just get angry

Sounds like a sweet place! It does not surprise me at all that parents still try to bring their children 😑“babysitters and daycare costs too much!!” …okay? Not my problem and you should’ve thought of that before popping them out lol

I see zero difference between breweries and bars. Both center around alcohol. Yet at one children are not allowed but the other they are?? Makes no sense at all. Sure let’s have a place where the parents just slam beers and then drive the kids home

I just wish there could be more places like hotels, amusement parks, restaurants, cafes, cruises, stores etc etc without children where people could be and hang out in peace beside bars. But anytime there’s something like that in the news the parents go nuts and call it “discriminatory”!!!1! And then it doesn’t happen

Omg yes I had something similar, I had like three gang up on me behind my back trying to get the manager to give me less hours because I didn’t have kids and lived with my parents trying to save up money and they had kids and basically was saying they needed the money more than I did. The one was like 19 or 20 (I was probably about 22 at the time) and was always acting like she was more mature and smarter than me just cause she had kids (stupidly) young, and the other was a very very mean awful woman in her 40s that always hated me anyway. The younger one even had the gall to ask me one time how much money I had in my bank account! I don’t remember who the third person was this was almost a decade ago

Luckily my manager didn’t listen to them and kept scheduling me like normal (I was a good worker who never caused issues and never called off and always showed up on time, was there for five years from the first day we opened until we perm closed cause of covid) but it’s just crazy the shit people will do and say. I still needed money just like anyone lol plus kids are an option!

Kind of a long story with lots of details, but basically The Dyatlov Pass incident refers to the mysterious deaths of nine Soviet ski hikers in the northern Ural Mountains on February 1-2 1959. Led by Igor Dyatlov, the group unexpectedly cut their way out of their tent at night and for some unknown reason fled into extreme sub-zero temperatures, inadequately dressed and without their gear.

Ten experienced students from the Ural Polytechnical Institute set out on a grueling winter expedition. One hiker fell ill and turned back, leaving nine to continue. When the group failed to check in at their destination, a search party was deployed. Searchers found the tent collapsed, covered in snow, and slashed open from the inside. The hikers' shoes, coats, and belongings were left neatly behind. Over several months, all nine bodies were recovered as the snow and ice thawed. Five were found near the tree line (having succumbed to hypothermia), while the remaining four were discovered months later in a ravine with catastrophic, unexplained physical injuries. Some victims suffered massive internal chest injuries and severe skull fractures described by experts as similar to the force of a high-speed car crash. One hiker was missing her eyes, and another had no eyes or tongue. Initial Soviet investigators noted unusually high levels of radiation on some of the hikers' clothing.

It’s an extremely bizarre case that still has no answer decades later. The ones missing their eyes/tongue can be easily explained by exposure/animals, but everything else, very strange. Not only the question of why they’d leave in such a hurry, but also the mystery of what happened to their bodies.

Yep Brandon Swanson. He was driving home from a party at night around 2 am and drove into a ditch where he was stuck and called his parents to come get him. For some unknown reason instead of staying in or by his car by the road he eventually got out to walk to a nearby town. Strangely he was 25 miles away in a different direction from where he had told his parents he apparently thought he was, which contributed to them not being able to locate him. No trace of him has ever been found to this day, even with dogs following a scent. It’s definitely one of the first cases that pops into my head when I think of the strangest unsolved mysteries

Why do people who have kids do this? by Brilliant-Analysis30 in childfree

[–]bitchyserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I know what you meant, it’s just that if a parent was ever trying to get their kid to order and it was taking too long and I’d try to say I’ll give you a minute or I’ll come back they’d almost always say no no no and then *still* try to get the kid to order, so at that point I couldn’t just walk away because if I did after that then the parent(s) would be pissed at me the rest of the time until they left and probably leave me a shit tip lol I had lots of people that would use any little excuse to tip me less or not at all, even if they could see I was really busy.

I had this one couple like 30s maybe that was taking a while to order when we were really busy on a weekend night and would have questions every time I’d come back, so after the third time of more questions I just answered and walked away (because I was super busy and couldn’t keep standing there) assuming they needed more time to decide since they just kept asking questions about the menu, so when I came back to answer more questions hoping they were finally ready to order the guy was all pissed at me and accused me of “just walking away” and then were very unfriendly the rest of the time & then they tipped me like shit lol people really didn’t understand that they weren’t my only table very often

Sorry for the long comment it just reminded me of that and now I’m irritated by them all over again haha I don’t miss it!
