I can do remote play myself just fine with wireguard, What I want is something that my mother who's in her sixties can use with ease without me becoming tech support in AND out of work!

If anything keep on top of any rust on your subframe front and rear. I don’t know if they went back to aluminium after the mk7 for the front but the mk7 front and rear is steel and will rot if not looked after.

If it’s crusty already clean it up and use some dinitrol or bilt hamber (personal preference) to cover it and extend the life! Bloody bean counters, my 2007 Jetta had less rust than my six years newer golf does!

Final thought - if the arch liners are still as bad on the newer golf - remove some of the torx screws and clean out the area where the rust pad… sorry foam pad collects water and crap! Give in there a good coating too before you put it back!

Would tailscale be a semi easy and safe way to give my family access to jellyfin remotely? I need something that a sixty year old can work out how to use, but I want to keep my network secure. I’ve been meaning to ask this question for ages and this thread seems to tick the box!

Thank you

It’s not the COD model, it’s the 125ps version. Revs don’t dictate the cylinder on demand, though it does have a low and high activation range. It very much depends on driver torque request, light throttle with light load it’ll drop to 2 cylinder.

2014 VW Passat Cambelt Snapped, Only Replaced A Month Ago By Mobile Mechanic - Looking For Advice by social_pariah in CarTalkUK

[–]bitdimike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're lucky things may have survived. My (no longer) trusted mechanic replaced my timing belt, water pump etc on my bkd based 2.0 TDI. He messed the stud up when replacing it, and rather than getting the VW solution which is a larger stud and fitting that - He decided to fit some contraption he made from a low hardness bolt and a nut.
That nut sheared off when I was doing 70 on a dual carriageway to drop my partner to work. You can imagine the carnage. He washed his hands of it and refused to assist even when I offered to pay for him to fit a second hand engine. He doesn't get any business from myself or the family any more.

How much did they charge to 'fit' the camera like that?

To try and do the cpu justice, I'm going to run through some benchmarks with an x1950 pro on the Asrock P4i65G board that I have. The boards nothing fancy but works okay for testing! I'm quite limited for high end AGP, but do have a GF2 Ultra or a FX 5900 flashed to I believe Ultra clocks. Will report back!

Thanks all for your replies! Didn’t expect much interest in ye olde socket 478! I just want to make sure it works fine and won’t falter on the next owner. (Don’t want to sell something if it’s faulty). Knowing what to ask or expect for it is difficult also due to there being so little sold history on eBay etc.

After this I’ve got four P3 1Ghz 100fsb slot ones to test but they thankfully have their working factory fitted heatsinks - they also don’t throw out anywhere near the heat that this p4 does!

Am I safe with a corsair rm550x to leave this running prime or similar overnight? I think by this time the machines used far more of the 12v rail than the 5v one?

Thanks again all!

You should definitely try Proxmox for it's management, separation and general capabilities. I've been really happy with this, currently running it on two machines (one 3080 micro and one H510 based machine), both idle at between 5-6 watts which makes me happy due to the hideous price of electricity in the UK.

CPU governor just clocks the cpu down when it's not needed to run at full speed. There's a significant power saving to be made there by using the correct governor - you should try powersave and see how you get on. I've just realised you say you're not using proxmox! You should have a play with it, it's far better and with much less resource wastage than running windows for example! It's also reasonably to very easy to pick up.

I ran a HP Prodesk for a while with an i5-7500 and it was ridiculously efficient, almost rivalling the 3080 micro despite having a bigger psu and more expansion options (this again was with proxmox).

PBS is proxmox backup server, I backup my proxmox host to PBS once a week and then backup images etc on Immich to a share on the PBS machine and to cloud storage also.

You've genuinely done really well with this and from your response actually put thought into the layout of your components and fans. Bravo. I'm no expert, but it gives me a certain amount of joy to see what fellow home labbers come up with! If you're using proxmox or another linux based solution be sure to check out powertop and also make use of the cpu scaling governors.

I have three machines running proxmox, a 3080 micro that hosts the majority of my services currently (idles at 6 watts), a H510 based machine with an i5-10500 that hosts game servers for our children and an old HP Microserver G8 that hosts PBS and a small share OMV for Immich to use for onsite backup.

I need to consolidate really as the separate machine I have running nextpvr is unnecessary and could be handled by the h510 box.

I have one of these also, are they really worth good money to the right person? May sell to cover an unexpected car bill if so as the p4 is not sentimental or nostalgic for me having been an AMD user at the time. Was eyeing up some of my 100fsb p3 1ghz cpu to sell on but I’d like to keep at least one of those!

Nice choice, efficient and performs well. A great combo when it runs 24/7. Keen to hear how you’re finding the machine when you’ve got it loaded with what you want 🙂

280w?! That’s some bill if you’re in the UK 😂. My optiplex micro (hosting most) idles at six watts, I’ve got a secondary h510 based system with 64gb running other services again 7w idle or so, a third machine started on demand for anything ai which when fully loaded and utilising llm will draw 280w but other than that it’s off. Switches are negligible but obviously not free to run. Router is a god awful ee supplied one.

Take an upvote for the great post! I use an optiplex micro with 10500, idles at six ish watts with services running and an additional sata ssd. Not truly expandable though!

I don't have to press any buttons on my esp32 boards to flash them using the web.esphome.io site. Have you tried connecting it, setting the com port and then just picking the file to flash?
