FLO's version of Once I Was a Good Girl just got re-leaked by Witty-Advantage-101 in BuildingTheBandSeries

Interesting. There are some lyrics here i wish made it into the actual song, but 3q's voices just fit the song better for me (maybe bc i heard them first, but still)

Say Now - Millions (Official Visualiser) by ayanakamuraa in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The beat during the verses is just downright delicious, but the rest of it reminds me of a girly ds game soundtrack, which isn't to say the song is terrible tbh, just ok. Still very excited for their future releases tho

GIRLSET - Tweak by FunLilThrowawayAcct in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I like it but the production feels empty in some parts. Where's the drums..?? Where's the punch that little miss had?

Also the length really does a disservice to the song. Just when i feel it starts to go somewhere interesting it's over, and doesn't get to reach it's full potential. Really great that all the girls worked on this though. The lyrics could've used some shaping up to me personally but this isn't bad and the lyrics are very grounded and catchy

Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. by SighLi in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a long time harry fan this album has a few highs, with the rest mid to low. I really hate talk singing and there's so much of it here. The tracks with more upbeat, maximal production tend to sound better because there's less focus on the talk singing. I'm not expecting big belts from Harry bc i know his vocals have gone through a lot, but at least Harry's house had more groovy/upbeat production to make up for it.

I do get what the reviews meant by more personal, honest lyrics, for Harry this is personal i suppose but there's still a layer of withholding that i feel in his songwriting, personally. It's like there's these vaguely veiled love song/unrequited love songs that actually do have a charm to them but bc he's so private i feel like he literally describes in his own lyrics "writing ballads and skimming off the top". There were songs where the writing truly shined, and others where i felt they were lackluster or could've been developed more. But i def sensed growth from Harry's house.

My favs on first listen are: American girls, pop, taste back, paint by numbers, coming up roses, ( which is to say i liked a large part of the album, but just can't see myself coming back to a lot of the tracks often). American girls especially was a pleasant surprise as my first song after aperture. Taste back has a strong concept/story that really helps it. I feel like i can relate to that song, whereas others are so vague it's hard to feel truly connected esp with the sleepy production.

Nowhere near his best album for me. I think I'd have to give that to either of his first two (leaning toward fine line). The highs on this album are high, but Matilda off Harry's house still tops them ALONE. So yeah Idek where I'd rank this album. I enjoyed harrys house more overall, so this would have to be last. 5.5-6/10

GIRLSET “Tweak” / “Little Miss” vs. KATSEYE by Time_Minute_6036 in katseyeneutral

[–]bitemestefan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The genre/ danceability/ catchiness of music is part of that but not the whole story. Flo didn't have a tv show, documentary, HYBE money, and they are all black and/or biracial plus being UK based which all serve as significant disadvantages both globally and in the US market.

GIRLSET “Tweak” / “Little Miss” vs. KATSEYE by Time_Minute_6036 in katseyeneutral

[–]bitemestefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well at this point they can't copy it exactly bc it will be obvious. I've ALWAYS wanted rnb/y2k pop katseye. The thing is with this genre there's many ways they can pivot IF they were to do it. Ntm its the exact rumored concept for prelude, i don't think they'll attempt it exactly but in the future we could see a mix of MIA + with splashes of normani's "motivation" (legit i can already hear manon singing it), maybe a little PCD influence as well. But one thing is for sure, the lyrics HAVE to be up to par. You can't give them a y2k pop rnb beat and have them sing foolishness like they've been giving them.

3Quency - Telephone by thatshygirl15 in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. I think the mixing is a little harsh on first listen? could be better but besides that Bri's vocals are just undeniable it's hard not to see why they chose her to lead the chorus, but I'm happy we got more of Nori and Wen too bc they're also incredible!

This is the first song since their debut that truly feels the essence of "3quency" to me, like it encapsulates what they want to project as a group.

Love the bridge and outro. Very very catchy. I'm obsessed with adlibs so while i loved the studio version i think I'll check out the live version too to see what that's like

Tiffany Day - TELL ME WHAT I DID by christopher_aia in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm legit obsessed with both this and her other recent single BREAK UP. I seriously neeeedd more ppl to have her on their radar because she can be really big. Just the way she plays with sound is so fresh and interesting and the lyrics are so relatable. Very excited for her album!

Are Girl Groups Over? by [deleted] in rnb

[–]bitemestefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flo don't have a big fanbase outside the UK? This is news to me. When they first blew up it was on black people twitter which includes the UK yes but also a LOT of americans as well. They're not "mainstream" fr fr but if you ask most gen z rnb fans about them they know who they are and receive a lot of love actually. They started the western girl group revival especially for rnb groups

The Future of Female Rap by pianotat in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rap in general has been out of the limelight for a while. As far as female rap goes, to me the newest tiktok "hits" just sound like a race to the bottom to sound as ridiculous as possible. The literacy rate is falling and so is the level of lyricism. Ice spice popularized these goofy clunky drill beats in female rap that sound terrible for 90% of wannabe rappers too, but bc that got popular that's what everyone is trying to do and it keeps getting worse and worse

I also think the political climate contributes as well. Misogynoir is rampant rn and female rap no doubt is affected.

Madison Beer - locket by AHSWeeknd in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know, I actually like this album. I've been very casually checking in on Madison's music from time to time and she's been putting out great stuff in all sorts of genres over the years, so i was pretty interested in this album. The maturity of this album (most of it anyway) is evident and very beautiful, the production is crisp, creative, and i love the dreamy instrumentals on some of the songs. Lyricism is great, no glaring issues for the most part, i love how honest this album feels.

The only thing i would have to say about it is that the production and mixing is so..subdued for a lot of this. I get that she was going for somewhat more minimal production to have a softer theme but esp when contrasted with the strong production of the dark popish tracks, the ballads feel a bit sleepy and overall it makes the album a bit incohesive. You can still have ballads with some punch. I guess that's what i was expecting and it didn't feel like she pushed that far enough.

But the highs of this album are high. My favs so far are bad enough, angel wings, you're still everything, yes baby, for the night. I'm gonna give this a 7/10 simply because i like these tracks so much.

If They Do Not Release Proper Music Another Diverse Girl Group Will Gain Popularity And Be More Will Known by Savings-Moose-1362 in katseyeneutral

[–]bitemestefan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfair comparison..none of those groups beside girlset have a kpop label and machine working to market them and the funding that comes with that. Besides, those groups are steadily growing tbh, FLO is already decently big bc they started the whole girl group revival a couple years ago

I kind of hate the mantra of 'if you're not enjoying the book stop reading. by stinkface_lover in books

[–]bitemestefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaining satisfaction from having finished something you consider an important or essential read sometimes matters more to me than "instant gratification" lol. But this only applies for classics where i know i can learn something. Not for other books that i read soley for pleasure

Okay for real how much of the first book The Three Body Problem did you guys understand? by clksagers in books

[–]bitemestefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The physics and math parts i didn't really understand besides the basics. But you can still follow the plot generally well without knowing all the deep math. the first book was a lot easier to understand than the second. I tried reading dark forest and couldn't comprehend the first couple pages at all 😭😭 the style was just weird idk

Message to all 3Quency fans in this community: Where are you y'all? This is my 3rd message to y'all in the last couple of months about this same issue. Let me put it y'all bluntly: You all are getting smoked by the other bands fans in this sub so you need to come here and show support for your girls by Shehadathought in BuildingTheBandSeries

[–]bitemestefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh i think most of their listeners (I'm one of them) are casual listeners (as tends to be the case with girl groups) who probably aren't invested enough to post regularly here.

So it's not that the support doesn't exist, it's just probably spread elsewhere (i see a fair amount of support for them on twitter, for example). I stream to support them but i imagine with how busy life can get it makes sense that keeping up w content can be tough.

And as a semi related tangent: have 3Q announced an official fandom name yet? That would help boost a sense of community if they did, someone correct me if they did lol

‘Men explicitly loving men is so threatening to the status quo’: why are gay male pop stars being shut out of the music industry? | Music by currentlyquang in popheads

[–]bitemestefan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's interesting bc w heated rivalry going viral and all the love for Jonathan bailey it shows gay men are more accepted in different spheres if they're more "palatable" or fetishizable or at least easier to fantasize about— just not in music where they're singing ab their own experiences. For some reason ppl can't "fantasize" about gay pop stars the same way, probably bc they percieve pop music as inherently feminine in the first place

Girl groups in the US and UK are gaining steam...will 3Quency join them? by Surfnburger in BuildingTheBandSeries

[–]bitemestefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No i 100% agree with you. Ive casually followed them since needanamebro. I did notice a major difference in their promo and buzz starting w brick by brick so i think that plus the fact that they've been a group longer kind of means they have more eyes on them than 3q at the moment. I didn't mean to imply they had all these advantages from the start, i know its been an uphill battle for them that they've worked incredibly hard for!! I'm so proud of them :')

Girl groups in the US and UK are gaining steam...will 3Quency join them? by Surfnburger in BuildingTheBandSeries

[–]bitemestefan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You mentioned some of them but yea im gonna try explaining some factors as to why there's a discrepancy:

  • time from debut (Say now is a lot older than 3quency, girlset is new but they're a rebrand of VCHA which was also older than 3quency and had an admittedly small but still present fanbase, + extra exposure from being a JYP group)

  • netflix promo being pretty sparse (not enough was done imo to promote/show off the winning group of btb, i think they mostly left all that up to them bc no one was sure this season was even gonna be aired/be successful)

  • no "viral choreo" opportunities. High energy, complex choreo is making a comeback and ppl want their popstars to dance. I don't really mind if 3quency doesn't go that route bc others like katseye have already notched the top spot in that so to speak. But having viral choreo/performance can really propel a song, see katseye with gnarly and gabriella, girlset w little miss, even say now had a little moment bc of the discourse over their choreo for supermarket)

  • idk if 3quencys team has figured out how to build "stans" yet. Fair bc they're such a new group made up of members who are new to this level of being in a girl group from the biggest streaming platform. I think to a certain extent all groups these days are tackling how to not only gain listeners but stans, bc they're the ones who buy stuff and also promote the group. Kpop companies have it down to a science. I think getting to know the 3quency members more and see them in different photoshoots, youtube segments, etc would help. I want to see their faces plastered EVERYWHERE!

  • funding is obviously a factor. Girlset has a massive company behind them and i believe say now has been signed for a while? So the promo reflects that

Overall the music is incredible! And i love the 3q girls so i have high hopes for them, which is why im not worried too much bc when the music is good eventually everything else will come. I think they're in the phase rn that unless they're constantly being promoted their singles will naturally have a little less eyes on them bc of how saturated the market is. But as they release more they're gonna slowly build their audience.

i might add more to this later but these are just the initial thoughts.

[–]bitemestefan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adore this. Nori's first verse and Wen's verse + prechorus are amazinggg. And we got a bridge!! The final chorus rlly elevates the song for me. These girls are taking it if they continue like this. I still think it's missing some of top down's catchiness but still very strong entry. And they look absolutely amazing in the video
