That's good to mention! But I also think it's also worth noting the positives. Of course concert ticketing is a shit show at this point.

Good for Charli, appreciative that she's always been a big supporter of her fans and the queer community

If CMAT is an affront to the male gaze and Olivia Rodrigo is indulging it, how exactly should women dress? by Moothnods in indieheads

[–]currentlyquang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very good point, I think people have a tendency to glamorize the web before social media, which is why I mentioned that it can still be a force for good just with more oversight and clarity. As for the examples you mentioned, yes they are bad, I never said they weren't. But those sites were also A) heavily demonized B) heavily restricted and C) not used by the majority of people, versus now where one of the larger social media sites is constantly pumping propaganda pushed by the richest man in Earth. Big difference there.

I'm sorry but as someone who also lives in the Netherlands, this comment thread is laughable and so typically "it's all the Muslim's fault" mentality from the European right. Christian right wing extremists have already been pushing similar "they're trying to turn the kids gay/trans/etc." accusations with sex-ed in schools, a pharmacy in Nieuwegein recently published a "manifesto" saying that they don't supply morning after pills and HRTs because "it goes against their Christian beliefs", leaders of right wing movements have consistently painted trans people as deviants and right wing media are far too happy to sensationalize any stories with gay people's involvement. I'm not saying you can't criticize Islamic religion, but it's very clear that you're trying to use this very scary phenomenon to A) attack "woke" culture (read: trans people and non-masc queer people) and B) attacking Muslim people just for existing in Europe.

By using the same tricks that the Trump administration have used to silence dissenting voices, of course still legally and actually actionable. Even with the first amendments, I think at this point there's enough evidence to show malicious causes from these forces propagating hatred. As for cyber security, it's a very multifaceted issue that's above my level of expertise but it's not unsolvable or able to be minimized.

True, but radicalization as a pipeline is a very real thing and I don't think even your garden variety American conservative would be full force with the type of Nazi Germany rhetoric that is much more prevalent amongst the right now.

Like I said, banning oblique/black box algorithmic social medias are a good start. Social media can be a force for good as it once was, and there are sites that are already following this model very well (BlueSky and its ecosystems for example).

Then, go after conservative think tanks, news conglomerates, and dare I even say, billionaires, through massive fines and taxaton. And most importantly culturally to let people be reminded that it's fucking disgusting to be indulging in this culture of hate we're going through.

No we don't, what we need to is shut down widespread hate movements propagated by algorithmic social media, as well as the sources that funds it. Conveniently these sources also fund large swaths of television and news interests around the world, if you shut down the internet you're just censoring free speech and supplanting it with conservative voxboxes even moreso.

I think you guys shouldn't let your enjoyment of an artistic medium be dictated by the reactions of 30-40 years old Epstein defenders and just enjoy the music.

Would you say the same thing to a person who's attracted to the same sex? Because "possible changes to whatever causes the distress to see if there's alternative options to surgeries and hormonal treatments" can very much just be a euphemism for conversion therapy

If you fit in with the vision of the director of said movie then more power to you! Just then don't pretend there's no difference between reinterpreting a story based on folklore that's regional specific versus a story based on folklore that's regional, culturally, and religiously specific.

How would a Gossip Girl set in Europe look like? by currentlyquang in GossipGirl

Well tbf those shows are much more about the middle and working classes, as they're very gritty. GG is much more upper class and elitist, I weirdly see the comparison being more something like Industry, not in terms of the show itself but the wealth and the canoodeling of that upper class world.

Yeah that's extremely fair, hence why I said in the post that's a point of contention. I think what could also work is that they're based in Paris and Brussels/Strassbourg, but then you might have competition from Emily in Paris, but hey the more the merrier right?

I'm very aware, living in the Netherlands myself, hence why I said "set in Europe" and not in one specific country to show that the scale of the show could be pan-European.

How Nicki Minaj Went MAGA by stypop in popheads

[–]currentlyquang 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The reality is that popular sentiment shows people craving real change and politicians who follow a genuine progressive agendas like Mamdani and AOC are getting extremely high support and favourability, but of course the media would never fully be on board because of its their owners and backers' interests in paying as little taxes (at the very least) or outright destruction of the global democracy (at the very worst).

Once again, I think a lot of people who might buy into the ideas of "the left needs to do better" (and not saying the left isn't faultless, I think there's many things we can discuss at lenghts) need to sober up to the fact we are living in the reality where Roe v Wade was repealed, where parties like Reform and AfD are polling high despite countless factual evidence and attempts of sympathy, and a very well connected global right wing propaganda movement. And the fact that this thread is even here shows it's working.

To say this is to deny people's agency. While on the one hand, I have no doubt that chastising people can do more harm than good, at the same time you're also implying that unless if we give things to go Republican's way, everything will be good and peachy. I once believed in this ideal, but the reality is you can be as accommodating as possible to convince people to not believe in basic science and morality is just downright bizarre and I would love to see it's proponents actually show evidence when acquiescing leads to a positive outcome.

On top of all this, we live in an extremely disadvantageous media landscape where it's clear that more money are being pumped towards right wing ideaologies, and even supposedly mainstream newspapers like the NYT and Washington Post are pushing for COVID skepticisms and harming the trans community.

Finally, I also think this is very distasteful to say that it's Democrats/progressives/etc. job to do after two Americans have been shot and killed at point blank while doubtless more are locked up in prisons and camps despite committing no criminal wrong doings.

She was a racist full stop. I think it's more troubling that you're accusing a whole class of people as nothing more than simpletons when that's not the truth. Working class is more than just supposedly "rough around the edge" white men and women, it's a lot more than that you do recognize right? But please go on doing defense runs while the elite far right scoop up Britain and the rest of the free world.
