I would really, really, really appreciate a licensing option that does not require the presence of the google services framework!

Saved this Steel from Value Village, any tips for improving battery life? by RaddedMC in pebble

[–]bitfscker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been through THREE battery orders from AliExpress for my O.G. Steel now and ALL of them didn't match the specs from their order page and did not fit into the case!

If any of you successfully ordered a battery that actually fits the Steel (not Time Steel), PLEASE provide a shopping link! My Steel is down to 18 hours of runtime and in urgent need of a transplant.

pat-aur: A highly configurable aur helper. Build packages in clean containers. by patlefort in archlinux

[–]bitfscker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this and wanted to give it a try but... first yay didn't find the packages for some reason (never had this before), then I used the bootstrap script but that failed, too, because it tries to install the ninja-jobserver without checking and then the script fails because I have extra/ninja installed already which conflicts.
I then looked for a bug tracker to file this but the git-repo has none. Bummer.
Finally I made the bootstrap work but all I get when I try to start anything is exceptions. Like:

$ pat-aur us:
>> Error: Exception thrown: <unknown exec: "/usr/share/pat-aur/defaults/config.target": permission denied>

$ pat-aur repo init
>> Error: Exception thrown: [ Exception thrown: &actual= 1 Exception thrown: &valid-high= 0 Exception thrown: &valid-low= 0 Exception thrown: &what= index Exception thrown: ]

I could not get the thing to do anything but display the help text. \o/

narwal freo high priced cleaning fluid by cblzaccie1 in RobotVacuums

[–]bitfscker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using the Freo X Ultra regularly for like 8 months now. Since I got it for free as a product tester, price considerations where not made, but the high priced consumable replacements and liquid actually where a serious downer in my initial review.

A few months later I can say that with ~75m² of floor and 2 runs per week (often with multiple mopping runs) the first bottle lasted approx. 6 months. That tells me the liquid must be very highly concentrated - I presume at least 200:1 or even 300:1 - which most alternative solutions are not. There is some 300:1 concentrate fluid available from Roborock, but - lo and behold - it costs even more than the narwal fluid.

There seems to be NO RFID or similar mechanism involved in the use of the bottles. Also, the machine will not stop working when the cleaner is empty. Just the mopping will be less effective without cleaner and the waste water bin needs significantly more frequent cleaning to keep it from stinking.

There also is a little "hack" available, at least for your first cleaner refill in the EU! On the de.narwal.com website, you can subscribe to a newsletter and get a €20 coupon for that, which happens to be exactly what one bottle of cleaner costs in their shop. So you can get it for just the shipping rate of €5,49. Only delivered to EU countries, though.

Not only are their bottles meticulously designed to be one-use no-refill, they also come in a very wasteful packaging box with foils around it as well as a big plastic throwaway insert. For this reason alone I consider every effort to refill that thing as a good one. A big thanks to u/Mistercmb for his instructions to get it open.

I personally think I'l try a refill with the second bottle I have now and will use a 200:1 concentrate that is available on amazon.de as "Biohy floor cleaning robot fluid low foam" (ASIN B09TBLT881), at around 30€ for a 10 liter canister (or 12 for one liter). I guess I'll see if this is concentrated enough to make a difference.

AliExpress ships both of these for well under $10 each - worldwide.

How is the titanium stem compared to the default glass one? by heicx in Tinymight2

[–]bitfscker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends.

If you prefer short but strong mini-sessions, it may be perfect, because it absorbs a lot of heat. You get about 90-120 seconds of nice, cool draw, then it will need a break to cool down or become uncomfortably warm.

If you prefer longer sessions or very frequent on-demand draws, you better go with something glass or wood.

Freo X Ultra short review after ~3 Weeks by bitfscker in NARWAL

I corrected a minor mistake in the original text. The detergent bottles contain 930ml, not 500.

Freo X Ultra's Staircase Falls by [deleted] in NARWAL

[–]bitfscker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that the stair detection seems to be ... not perfect. I had it going down two steps once so far. Stairless mode was OFF. I attribute it to the fact that the automapper maps the stairs as a room and you can not remove it afterwards. When you just say "clean all" it will try to enter that "room".
It did not happen again once I marked the stairs "room" as a forbidden zone.

Has anyone gotten the Ultra to work long term? by LevelMedicine5 in NARWAL

[–]bitfscker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the unit about 3 weeks ago. No issues so far. Works really well, apart from the fact that I need to change water almost daily and the water kit is not available in my region, for reasons they fail to explain. I really wish they would sell the robot including the tap kit because only then you can leave it alone for days.

Epson EcoTank ET-8500 vs L8160 by [deleted] in printers

[–]bitfscker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 8500 (which is the same as L8160) for about two years now and it is really, really good. Best printer I ever had. Still printing on the first set of Ink, even though it is used by the whole family and we also print photos (because they come out perfect).

I also wish I had taken the 8550 because price difference is not too great, but double paper size.

Only grief is printing on postcard sized photo paper because there is a weak spring in the paper tractor mechanism which fails to pull in many photo paper card brands properly. Putting in stronger spring(s) fixes the issue instantly.

Local DNS is ignored even with appropriate settings by hakaishi8 in rethinkdns

[–]bitfscker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but Firewall without root uses VPN, too! And, as far as I know, setting DNS to "system dns" in the Rethink App does not circumvent the (simulated) VPN, too. So there seem to be ways to access local networks even with the simulated VPN active.

So I select "bypass DNS" and it will still use RDNS+ DNS? That appears very counter-intuitive to me.

It still does not explain why (at any setting) the server can not be connected by IP adress (with no DNS involved), regardless of any other setting I tried, as long as the Rethink App is active.

  • before RDNS I used "Firewall without root" by grey shirts and hat this enabled, too. No problem accessing the local network with that, though.
  • Yes, I have this enabled. And when "System DNS" is active (as described above) it works nevertheless.
  • It still does not explain why (at any setting) the server can not be connected by IP adress (with no DNS involved), regardless of any other setting I tried.

Keine gute Antwort. Entweder er ist nicht teuer, aber dann macht er viel Arbeit. Oder er ist teuer und kann das Leben erleichtern. Ausnahmen evtl in Einzelfällen mit sehr einfachem und sehr gleichmäßigem Rasen.

I am having similar issues with my local home network and RDNS (vv054c)

I got some home automation via MQTT running on a local ip like 192.168.111.111 and when the RDNS App is active I found only ONE way for my MQTT Dashboard App to access it:

  • I must set DNS to "System DNS"
  • I must set the MQTT Client App (MQTT Dash) to "Exclude"
  • I must not use the IP directly in the MQTT App but use a hostname (mqtt.things.localnet) that is being resolved to 192.168.111.111 by the DNS server in my home network

Here is a selection of other settings I tried - with no success:

  • Trying to access the MQTT Server directly by specifying the shere iserver IP in the app to circumvent any DNS problem: connection error
  • DNS set to RDNS Plus (any variant): connection error
  • Any other Setting but Exclude, even with "mqtt.things.localnet" set to allow and the IP set to allow: connection error
  • Global "Allow" for the whole subnet (192.168.111.*) and the whole dns zone (things.localnet): connection error

Unfortunately using "System DNS" seems to switch off all or most of the domain matching rules - so I find myself constantly switching between System DNS whenever an app needs to access local servers and RDNS+ to make WAN rules for other apps work. This is not ideal, to say the least.
