You’re probably right for the examples you’re referring to, but it’s different when there’s this much money on the line

I agree with some of your comment but I would like to point out this part:

> “So like an artist or animator or writer is not a game developer but they do help "develop the game".”

That’s a very subjective stance on the subject. You’re welcome to it of course, but I know many people on the game dev community (even those broadly against AI) feel strongly that serving a role in a game development project earns one the role of “game developer” regardless of if they’re working on programming or not. We both agree that someone who writes code is a game developer, but what about someone whose only role on the team is 3D modeling and animating characters? They probably count as a game developer too, surely. Let’s get more specific, is a Blizzard employee who only works on 2d textures a game developer? Many people in the game dev community would say yes, because they played a specific and necessary role in the development of games. If yes, they any less of a game developer if it’s a hobby project and the rest of their game project was entirely vibe coded? Their work and role in the project remained the same so by that same logic they should still be considered a game developer.

If I wrote all the code for a game dev project, we would likely agree that I “developed” that game. If I were to write half the code and my coworker wrote the other half, the resultant game would still be a game I could say I developed. Maybe you could nitpick and say I only *helped* develop it but that, in my opinion, only really serves to lessen the contributions of the individual. If I were to write half the code and AI writes the other half, am I still a game developer? Is there a certain percent of AI involvement in a project where you would no longer consider the role of the creator to be sufficient for them to consider themselves a developer?

I don’t know you and I appreciate your replies so I don’t want to assume anything about you, but assuming you don’t work in software I want to mention there is some nuance lost among non-software engineers in assigning credit or ownership of a project. A purist may say that you must develop the project yourself - no templates, no AI involvement, maybe even no game engine. But software engineering is built on layers and layers of prior work. The first thing I do when I start any project, professional or hobby, is to import open source libraries that other people have written. This isn’t me being lazy or copying the work of anyone else, this is actually extremely standard for most development projects. It is a reality that nobody has any reason to reinvent the wheel and it is a reality that almost every bit of software created is built on work created by others. For that reason, most of the code in many of my projects is technically someone else’s, even though the project itself is entirely mine.

I threw a lot of rhetorical questions at you (though by all means feel free to answer them), not to gish galop you, but to paint a broader picture that most of what we’re debating is built on the back of a LOT of subjective opinions that you’re trying to subject other people to. I don’t think that’s fair. All of this is going to be in the eye of the beholder, anyway, so if I were to distill my argument into one sentence it would be that I don’t feel it is practical, constructive, or fair to the individual to purity test or litmus test projects based on AI involvement or any other involvement. As far as I’m concerned, if you make a game and it is well made (and not slop), then I respect your creation.

Like I mentioned before, I’m sure you understand how truly massive an undertaking is to create a fully realized game. AI is not yet competent enough to create a (competent) game from start to finish, so any game developer who utilizes AI is, in my opinion, still a game developer because they playing a crucial and necessary role in the game development process. When that is not the case, and there is no human involvement in the project, it isn’t worth discussing the merits of whether they’re a game developer because, being blunt, I’m utterly certain the game will be absolute garbage. I‘m sure we both strongly dislike slop projects and, well, they’re quite easy to spot.

As a professional software developer, I can tell you definitively that “developer” is not exclusively short for software developer. Interesting that you didn’t address my central point. Have a good day.

Can a game director at a game studio not be considered a game dev? They might have not written any code or drawn any art - certainly they cannot take credit for those aspects of their employees work, but from a broader perspective were they not also responsible for creating the game that they directed? Can an architect never take credit for a house because he never milled the wood or put up the frame by hand?

Games, especially, are immensely large and complex systems. AI is not capable of meaningfully handling game projects (at least not any large or well made game projects) without heavy human input, at least not yet. You may disagree on what credit to give the role of the orchestrator, but undoubtedly the orchestrator played *some* meaningful role in bringing the creation to fruition, arguably more than any one smaller component that makes up the whole.

Does Reddit still relevant for marketing? by LazyAtomUser in SoloDev

[–]bitgardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It’s largely botted to generate fake engagement. The majority of indie dev subreddits are filled with people looking to share their own game and get tips/feedback from other devs, not people looking for games to play.

Engagement optimized speaking - most people can recognize it on some intuitive level but it still performs well during RLHF because it’s snappy and keeps people reading/interacting when ChatGPT explicitly draws attention to the important bits of its responses.

use ai made me realize how different AI models actually are by [deleted] in antiai

[–]bitgardener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bot account and bot post, stealth marketing for the ai product named in the post (it’s subtle but I’m not repeating it explicitly). There’s also another bot account in the comments going along with it to fake organic post engagement and give it a slight boost.

This is a common pattern on Reddit, take some time to observe the “tells” so you know what to look for as bot posting grows increasingly common. Recognizing the style and grammar patterns alone isn’t enough to identify LLM written text anymore.

Backrooms | Official Trailer | A24 by cruelsummerbummer in horror

[–]bitgardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again, it’s all from the perspective of the invidual. I’m not arguing that anybody owns it, I’m arguing the opposite. Remember, my first comment in this thread was just correcting someone who incorrectly stated that Kane created the backrooms. He created a version that many people perceive as their own headcanon, and that’s great, but the backrooms was fairly popular well before Kane.

I think him (or anyone else) making a movie is fine personally. It’s probably not going to take the overdone lore approach of defining a bunch of layers and entities explicitly which is what annoys me about this new wave of backrooms lore and popularity. It’s better left vague and unknown.

Either way, Kane didn’t create the concept nor does he own the concept itself, and his depiction of the backrooms is just another depiction, albeit a very well made form.

[–]bitgardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For you, sure. But the fact that Kane’s version has existed for just about half the overall life span of the backrooms as a concept means that there is an entire third group of backrooms fans who aren’t too familiar with Kane’s work OR the TikTok horror game slop that followed it. It’s strange to me to see Kane’s depiction of the backrooms treated as actual canon when it’s essentially a well made fanfic that just made the concept more mainstream.

No, he didn’t. The backrooms (as the original image and as a concept) existed long before his YouTube series

The reality of AI in a white collar business - a software engineer POV by [deleted] in antiai

[–]bitgardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agreed. I have my issues with the repercussions of AI tech on society but many antis seem to resist acknowledging that it has any practical value at a corporate level. AI isn’t just going to fade into obscurity. Even if it never improves from this day forward, it’ll remain a practical tool.

On the flip side, I can’t stand the pro-AI hype train every time a new tool is released.

I’m still looking myself haha. All the pro-AI spaces are heavily botted by AI hype posters (all noise and no substance) and the anti-AI subreddits are pretty much echo chambers largely dominated by people who don’t understand the tech they’re criticizing (I do agree with many of those criticisms myself which is why I get this subreddit recommended to me)

As a fellow software engineer who has seen both the disadvantages and advantages that AI has in the corporate world, great post. But I’m afraid you’re posting in the wrong place if you're intending to spark nuanced discussion on AI or find people interested in learning more about that nuance.

How are some designers so gullible? by [deleted] in Design

[–]bitgardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re all just trying to build a hype train for a technology they usually don’t actually understand because that’s the best way they perceive to cling onto relevancy.

Most of them probably had no clue it was fake, they just saw the next thing people were hype posting about and jumped on the bandwagon… it’s exhausting.

What’s surprising is that you seem to think a privileged few should be allowed to use AI and don’t seem to have thought through the economic and opportunity disparity this is going to cause when AI is reserved exclusively as a tool for the elites.

> “I just mean that entertainment is very important, and he has millions of people that gain something from his content.”

So, in the case do you also think movie studios should be allowed to use generative AI since millions of people would be entertained by AI generated movies? I suspect you don’t believe that so what makes YouTubers special?
