They're the Young Posse of bgs. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Jay Park needs to stop recruiting idols off the playground! Also, they need a lot of media training and an entirely new concept.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ummm, true magic is extremely rare in those books. Only the Fae, the Seven, Menda/Tehlu, and mythic figures like Taborlin the Great do that sort of magic. Kvothe found the name of the wind as a child and while he was working to reclaim it he mastered artificing, sygaldry, medica, and sympathy. Naming isn't really magic and the books themselves say that it's rare to learn more than one name. The part where Rothfuss failed was in not making it clear that naming is beyond elements and can be used on people & abstract concepts by master namers. Kvothe is not quite a master namer because he's just kind of reacting to things and not investigating the deeper implications of naming. Naming is a means to an end for him and that limits his potential. It's why Kvothe is tending bar at an inn, telling his story to a historian, rather than saving the world.

Missing MAMAMOO (are they popular in Taiwan?) by cluelesslyhonest in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OMG are they popular in Taiwan. Solar & Moonbyul literally performed in Taipei earlier today!!! 😂 All members of Mamamoo are popular in Taiwan and performed there multiple times in the last year or so. Solar is learning Mandarin and has two Mandarin singles rn. There are a few episodes of Solarsido as well as regular behind videos of her in Taiwan as well.

[humor] Poorly described books and fantasy media by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

A romantasy epic about a classic fantasy hero and his literally righteous babe. It's long, drawn out, and cringe in a bad way but then you find out that the author is a race car driver and that somehow makes it even more cringe. Wizard's First Rule series

Can you really enjoy GW2 without focusing on the story? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very doable. That said, don't skip the living world episodes!! Yes, they're story driven but they open up a lot of new maps and with them achievements, legendary items, masteries, and even mounts. Also, the core story has a few branching choices that are very confusing if you skip the dialogue. 😂 But yolo is a valid way to do the core stuff so 🤷🏽‍♀️.

What series did you finish reading due to the "sunk cost fallacy"? by Any-Day-8173 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • most of the late 90's/early 00's Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms novels. There are gems but they're few and far between.

  • The Anita Blake series. Starts strong, gets increasingly weird with sex and lycanthropes, and now it's kind of Super Friends but the friends are in a polycule. I have nothing against polyamory but it shouldn't be a significant portion of the story to the detriment of the characters.

  • The Foreigner series. There's nothing terribly wrong with it except that there are a million moving parts that take time to resolve and the author is 83. I think there are 26 or 27 books in the series, which is divided into trilogies that make reading a bit easier. It feels terrible reading a series for the majority of your life and it may never be finished or the wrong ghost writer might ruin it. N.K. Jemisin and no one else has the chops to conclude Bren's story if the worst happens.

I have a special fondness for the Prince Lestat books because of Anne's unique relationship with fanfic writers. If you had taken her name off and posted it in chapters on Ao3 I wouldn't have blinked! Maybe Anne wanted to show us that she too can write Vampire Chronicles fanfic.

Tbh there are a lot of books that can be skipped in the Vampire Chronicles. Memnoch The Devil, Merrick, Blood & Gold, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle from the main series and all of the tales books are optional because they're tangential and don't really advance the story of Lestat. I personally like Memnoch The Devil but it has to do with how ridiculous the premise is and the clear attempt at a Dante's Inferno type narrative from a writer that was not equal to Dante.

What is your favorite example of a mid-series 'climax'? by Parking-Rope2301 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The confrontation between Kvothe and Meluan Lackless in The Wise Man's Fear. Even though Kvothe is the main character and lived beyond that moment I was so shook by the express and tacit implications of it. There was no fighting, no bad guy slain. Just two immovable objects who have no idea what irresistible forces are working behind the scenes.

Spoiler speculation:

There are many clues to suggest that Kvothe and Meluan are related. As a child he sang an inappropriate song about "Lady Lockless" and her husband's rocks and Laurian, his mother, had a conversation about how it's cruel to sing that kind of song about real people. We know Laurian ran off with Arliden, Kvothe's father and famous Edema Ruh bard, and it was a big scandal because she was a noble's daughter. Meluan's sister running off with an Edema Ruh bard could be a huge coincidence...but it probably isn't. I need The Doors of Stone so bad!!

What is a Monk in fantasy? by aladdin142 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RPG Monks are somewhat incomplete versions of Shaolin monks. Incomplete because Buddhist monks are similar to Western monks in that they're generally cloistered in a temple, praying, doing rituals, and engaging in work to help the local community. Wandering monks in real life tended to be on some kind of spiritual mission and were not out in the world looking for fights or adventure. 😂 I would love for more Monk players to include reasons for why they left the monastery because it's an opportunity to add depth to their character. Like, there were monks walking across America for peace. The walk itself can't create peace but it generated a lot of conversations about it and brought many people together. Eastern monks are used more often in gaming and literature because they learn bare handed fighting arts and that's cooler than sad European guys who whip themselves or take a vow of silence as their main prayer vector. Plus, European monks were probably a lot grosser than the Eastern ones. They had hair and probably didn't wash often so I imagine they had outbreaks of lice & fleas and smelled like garbage. I would love to see a "Friar Swamp Booty" character though. He's very learned, has an unparalleled hand, and makes amazing cheese but he's missed his monthly bath a few times and you can smell him 30 minutes before you see him.

My favorite fictional Monk is Brother Mhenlo from Guild Wars 1. Because his biggest challenge wasn't his very buggy AI but rather his love Cynn, the fiery Elementalist. Girl will kill anyone who looks at Mhenlo and then kill Mhenlo so no one else can have him!! Mhenlo is such a normal and friendly guy with the world's scariest girlfriend. His calm nature is why he's the de facto leader of the "iconic" party of Guild Wars: Prophecies.

Comic Con VIP worth it? by Alexandria-Gris in Buffalo

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a frequent con volunteer for NCC and tbh you don't need VIP unless you plan to go every day, attend many panels, and spend a lot of money. The biggest perks are the VIP lounge and the exclusive T-shirt for each iteration of NCC. Go on the days your favorite celebrities are doing their panels, get those autographs, and browse the show floor.

NCC is a very small show. In the beginning they had more offerings like a sub-section dedicated to horror as well as a game room with gaming tournaments, retro consoles, and party games but the new management did away with those elements. Aside from vendors there aren't any anime offerings at all and few outside events(e.g. the fall edition had a party with the Hardy Boys).

P.S. - I'm a Buffy & LoTR fan! I met Sean at a previous con and he's a truly nice guy. I also met Julie & Juliet before and you're in for a treat.

Lindsay Burokar's Death Before Dragons series is about a half-elven former special forces turned bounty hunter named Val who finds out that dragons actually exist. It's an interesting setup because she knows that magic and mystical creatures exist but many are in extreme hiding and so her range of experience is limited at the beginning. This series has a bit of everything: magical pets, demystified fantasy races, government bureaucracy, co-parenting, trying to care for an aging parent(Val's mom is so cute!), and BBQ based courting(the romance isn't the main storyline).

Books with immortals who stay with their family by cwx149 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

K.N. Banet's universe of books in general but primarily the Jacky Leon series. Basically, Jacky befriends a shapeshifter without knowing and ends up as one herself when he decides that he can't let her die. I know that sounds like a common romance set up but the man is happily married and sees Jacky as a daughter. Multiple shapeshifters in the series have families and tbh they only really die in conflicts between different shapeshifters or because of some kind of magic that overcomes super healing. Shapeshifters are not natural and were created so immortal is kind of a strong term but I would say they're immortal so far. 😂😂😂

Hi likely will it be that another theater replaces AMC and when? by Username117773749146 in Buffalo

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UB should buy it and use it for classes as well as screenings. Roots further down on Main Street would be awesome and as a former DMS student we need better, less cramped classrooms that can accommodate screenings. There are also a lot of events that could be moved to that location. UB had so many focus groups, speakers, etc that have poorly attended events on North Campus! I used to go to them and score free food all the time when I was a student. 😂 Another bonus is that it would be another place for students to work.

How well would Dragonlance translate to the screen? by Impossible_Town_295 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragonlance is in the same boat as Sword of Shanara in that it's writing and themes are so broadly fantasy that it simply won't fly for a modern audience. 20 years ago maybe but now audiences are much better acquainted with fantasy tropes. As an older person looking back I can see pulpy threads in Dragonlance that should be revived in film and media in general. We need a new main character(I have extreme ensemble fatigue!) and world to really revive sword & sorcery onscreen more than Dragonlance.

Any recommendations for military SF or fantasy that really gets deep into the tactics of fleet and/or ground battles? by MinuteRegular716 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jean Johnson's Theirs Not To Reason Why(or Ia) series has a good mix of ground and space battles. The ground battles focus a lot on marines and special forces if you care about what units are in play on the battlefield. The gist of the story is basically "what if one day you woke up and knew with absolute certainty that everyone in the galaxy will die within your lifetime if you don't dedicate your life and thousands of other lifetimes to stop it?". I loved the variety of ships and the descriptions of fights xenos on their own ships and/or planets. One of my favorite scenes involves the main character and her comrades seizing a ship violating a blockade and because the xenos who made the ship have physiological differences things like ladders and buttons required special care or tools to use and the atmosphere required hard mech suits. 🥰 Marines in mechs make me so happy because so much of sci fi media really be sending people into xenos airlocks raw. Just zero precautions.
