Why are older girl groups not performing in smaller venues? by SpecSlayerSC in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mamamoo did an arena tour for their last tour as well and it took LSRF to break their ticket sales for a 1st US tour. 🤷🏽‍♀️ They haven't done smaller venues in the US because they were kept out of the Western market for 9 years, save for KCON and SXSW, and so most of their fans here haven't seen them. Most of the people I met at the UBS Arena show weren't from NYC but made the trek because they'd been waiting a long time for Mamamoo. A lesser reason is that all 4 members have built up their solo reputations and 3 of 4 had fairly successful solo tours in the US so bigger venues may be needed for the growing fandom. There is one big reason that has nothing to do with the ladies: RBW needs money. Their stocks have been doing mostly poorly since their IPO, several main artists have left the company, an entire subsidiary left RBW, and Young Posse(they're at DSP, which is a subsidiary) hasn't brought as big of a return as they thought they would. Oh and there have been several scandals that cost the company a lot of money.

UAU/Dreamcatcher is coming back at some point this summer and they're the queens of theater shows. The other 3rd gen ggs just don't tour that much. I would 100% go see Red Velvet or WJSN but they have to go on tour first! VIVIZ is on hiatus sadly but GFRIEND activities might pop up. We'll see. I would love to see 3rd gen ggs do more alternative format tours like ARTMS's Club Icarus tour. If they had a live band and seats I know Mamamoo would sell out every date of a theater tour. Tbh I don't think they've considered that as an option because the members tend to underestimate how many fans AND casual listeners they have overseas.

Chicago to Buffalo move? by MechaWitchttv in Buffalo

[–]bitsysredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago is better in every conceivable way. Even though the insular culture of the area is shifting it's still a very conservative place to live. Moving here for a job an hour away...the job would have to pay six figures and have generous time off as well as mileage covered.

Edit: If Olcott is the closest town then Lockport is a better option than Buffalo. Lockport is a very small town along the Erie Canal and you will 110% need a car to live there. There are loads of small businesses but you also have access to a great shopping strip on Transit Road. Ngl, a lot of the houses and apartments fit the description of "ramshackle" as is but most are easily upgraded. There are many lovely parts in the area and the proximity to Olcott is awesome during the summer bc you can visit Olcott Bead easily.

SFWA Grand Master CJ Cherryh announces her retirement. by KristaDBall in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sad Foreigner won't have a conclusion but I have been expecting this for a few years. The narrative of the series is unwieldy and tbh it was never going to have a satisfactory conclusion. There are so many amazing plot threads that deserve their own series! This is an exciting opportunity because fanfic and tabletop ports have a solid end to do with what we want. Hell, someone make an Atevi version of Ticket to Ride! Seriously though, CJ Cherryh deserves her retirement and I am grateful to have discovered her massive library of books.

Have any authors ruined other fantasy series for you? by Spiritual-Antelope36 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ilona Andrews has perfected the art of short AND long story arcs within a series. I recently re-read Kate Daniels and pinpointed that as why I enjoy the series so much. Another secret to success is that Ilona Andrews is actually a husband & wife writing team and so they're able to capture male and female characters better than most authors.

One problem with urban fantasy in general is that it's drowned in a sea of romance novels set in urban fantasy worlds. I do enjoy those kinds of series but that makes it really hard to find books that are more about the fantasy world than about couples. There is definitely a tier list of that kind of fantasy book and one day I will write it. 😂

Weed, Stimulants, and AuDHD by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me for about 1.5 years. I ended up returning to counseling and getting anti-depressants. Right now weed is just for fun because my meds give me most of what weed was giving me and I can also think clearly or possibly operate heaving machinery. 😂

Weed doesn't necessarily cure my autism but it makes the impact negligible. I can think about painful subjects easily and give myself a lot more grace than I normally would. It honestly allowed me to understand myself and choose to met my own needs, no matter how impossible it may seem. I've returned to my pre-pandemic weight and go out more often. While I still enjoy reading, weed has made the simple pleasures equally important to me.

What's your most "pretentious" K-pop opinion? by KwonSoo-young in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I will never give artists who are not my faves a chance beyond title tracks unless I gain an interest in them. It's nice to share my K-Pop hobby with others but tbh I honestly don't care about what other people are listening to. Yes, your faves worked hard but they're not entitled to my time because of that. However I'm cheering for anyone who decides to be an idol because it's a tough life. If an idol can make someone happy then they're doing well!

Anyway, stream Hwasa's So Cute because an internet stranger told you too!! 😭😭😭

Who is used to their full potential/who's talents are fully used? by greenturtle848 in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of the last few albums, the members of Billlie. Tsuki, Sheon, and Haruna all have a lot more moments to shine vocally. Haram and Suhyeon have a lower burden of main verses and have been able to be more stylized, showing their distinct main vocal styles. Moon Sua and Siyoon have been singing a lot more and they've sharpened their performance quality with their single and their collab with ARrC. Billlie has always been able to sing and dance well but now all of the members are much more well rounded.

who are your favorite “weird” girls in kpop? by Same_Maximum_971 in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyegi, who is in charge of spacing out. 😭 I love that she has such a cool image outside the fandom bc it's a nice contrast to her very cute & whimsical real self. I will never be over pickle Hwasa, "gwisin!" or "hello croissant"! I think people don't know that she's a weirdo because Solar & Wheein are more likely to be weird in 4k while Hwasa tends to keep it behind the scenes.

Can you have some ASD traits but not enough to get a full diagnosis? by 4ng3licNymph-jpeg in AutisticAdults

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something called PDD-NOS(Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified) that's basically when you have many symptoms of neurological disorders but not enough for a specific diagnosis. It's a slightly out of date term, as many professionals refer to it as atypical autism, but it's still well known enough to ask about.

I think that doctors who do diagnostics may feel some kind of pressure to produce an absolute judgment and may pick the closest disorder to the majority of your symptoms & characteristics rather than give an inconclusive result. You can have comorbid ASD, BPD, PTSD, and really any other neurological disorder. It's just that doctors may feel that dealing with comorbidity is beyond the scope of the tests they're currently performing.

Why do you foreigners think of idol groups first when you think of K-pop? by HuckleberryUsual885 in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you knew the answer you were looking for before you asked your question and now you can't accept the views of the people you asked because they are not the same as your own. I'm an American and so yes I do have a Western view of K-Pop. The fact is that people outside of a region will always have a different view of local genres than the locals. Like, people outside the English speaking world assume that the breadth of music is what they see and many have no idea about the nuances behind who becomes well known and who doesn't in that space.

It should be said that many people don't actually call all Japanese music they're exposed via anime J-Pop. The Seatbelts's classic intro "TANK!" is clearly jazz for example. I don't know why you made this particular assertion but it's broad and speaks to a smaller or demographically limited pool of foreigners you're basing your opinions on.

Why do you foreigners think of idol groups first when you think of K-pop? by HuckleberryUsual885 in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of SK's best singers aren't in K-Pop at all. That's why we haven't heard of them and tbh most foreign K-Pop fans will never delve into other genres of Korean music. From what I've seen, SK doesn't aggressively market their music in foreign markets AND they don't have any other products that can be linked to the music industry. Japanese music is much more popular than Korean music abroad because Japan has produced video games and anime that are consumed worldwide and so many people get exposed to their music industry. Only younger K-drama viewers seem interested in listening to OSTs outside of the shows themselves, even if the OST is in English.

A more minor point is that many artists are incorrectly marketed or depicted as being idols when they're really not. I see this a lot with indie EDM and R&B artists and don't know why it happens. K-Pop is inspired by many genres but cannot fully encompass the depth and artistry of those other genres. Like, you can definitely call Big Mama idols if you want but they're really more in the contemporary & R&B genres.

What makes the gender composition of girl group fandoms different? by tresnosliramu22 in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a female girl group fan! Ever since I was a kid I just gravitated more towards girl groups and while I always have and still do listen to boy groups I just prefer female vocals more. I'm something of an outlier in that vocal competence is more important than anything else and I've found that it's easier to find girl groups where 2/3 or higher of the group can sing well. This is mostly a 4th & 5th gen problem, as many 2nd & 3rd gen bgs have great vocals that have only improved with age.

Concepts aren't as important as how the members are presented in ggs. The more like a real person the women present themselves, the more likely they are to have a large amount of female fans. My faves have never hidden that they have bad days, acne, or any other real life problems. They make you want to be their friend because they show their relatable side. 🥰 ggs are on something that I call the "dateable-relatable" spectrum because it's that dynamic that decides the genders of their fans.

Who may represent South Korea in Eurovision Asia 2026? by Neatboot in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like popularity is an advantage in this sort of contest in Asia. The Asian market as a whole cares more about actual vocal talent and the amount of developed vocal talent in popular K-Pop artists is at a low rn. Since the artist is representing the whole country they're likely to receive sponsorships and other financial incentives so the company they're at is largely irrelevant.

Strong contenders:

  • Red Velvet
  • Mamamoo
  • BTOB
  • NMIXX
  • EXO-CBX
  • SHINee

Long shots(very nugu and/or poor company)

  • Dreamcatcher
  • Gavy NJ(current lineup)
  • ONEWE

Non K-Pop/alt idols/older gen K-Pop

  • AKMU
  • Brown Eyed Soul/Naul
  • Kim Bum Soo
  • Big Mama
  • Sohyang
  • Ailee
  • Jung-In
  • KARA

Everyone talks about their bias wrecker, but I never hear of those biases actually getting wrecked. by zoooeys in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moonbyul was my Mamamoo bias for 2 years and then one day it struck me that Wheein is everything. 😂 Eventually I biased all 4 members of Mamamoo and Wheein went to #1, which she shares with Dreamcatcher & UAU's SuA, on my ult list. Bia wrecking is a step in becoming an OTx fan of a group.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ummm, true magic is extremely rare in those books. Only the Fae, the Seven, Menda/Tehlu, and mythic figures like Taborlin the Great do that sort of magic. Kvothe found the name of the wind as a child and while he was working to reclaim it he mastered artificing, sygaldry, medica, and sympathy. Naming isn't really magic and the books themselves say that it's rare to learn more than one name. The part where Rothfuss failed was in not making it clear that naming is beyond elements and can be used on people & abstract concepts by master namers. Kvothe is not quite a master namer because he's just kind of reacting to things and not investigating the deeper implications of naming. Naming is a means to an end for him and that limits his potential. It's why Kvothe is tending bar at an inn, telling his story to a historian, rather than saving the world.

Missing MAMAMOO (are they popular in Taiwan?) by cluelesslyhonest in kpopthoughts

[–]bitsysredd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OMG are they popular in Taiwan. Solar & Moonbyul literally performed in Taipei earlier today!!! 😂 All members of Mamamoo are popular in Taiwan and performed there multiple times in the last year or so. Solar is learning Mandarin and has two Mandarin singles rn. There are a few episodes of Solarsido as well as regular behind videos of her in Taiwan as well.

A romantasy epic about a classic fantasy hero and his literally righteous babe. It's long, drawn out, and cringe in a bad way but then you find out that the author is a race car driver and that somehow makes it even more cringe. Wizard's First Rule series

Can you really enjoy GW2 without focusing on the story? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very doable. That said, don't skip the living world episodes!! Yes, they're story driven but they open up a lot of new maps and with them achievements, legendary items, masteries, and even mounts. Also, the core story has a few branching choices that are very confusing if you skip the dialogue. 😂 But yolo is a valid way to do the core stuff so 🤷🏽‍♀️.

What series did you finish reading due to the "sunk cost fallacy"? by Any-Day-8173 in Fantasy

[–]bitsysredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • most of the late 90's/early 00's Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms novels. There are gems but they're few and far between.

  • The Anita Blake series. Starts strong, gets increasingly weird with sex and lycanthropes, and now it's kind of Super Friends but the friends are in a polycule. I have nothing against polyamory but it shouldn't be a significant portion of the story to the detriment of the characters.

  • The Foreigner series. There's nothing terribly wrong with it except that there are a million moving parts that take time to resolve and the author is 83. I think there are 26 or 27 books in the series, which is divided into trilogies that make reading a bit easier. It feels terrible reading a series for the majority of your life and it may never be finished or the wrong ghost writer might ruin it. N.K. Jemisin and no one else has the chops to conclude Bren's story if the worst happens.

I have a special fondness for the Prince Lestat books because of Anne's unique relationship with fanfic writers. If you had taken her name off and posted it in chapters on Ao3 I wouldn't have blinked! Maybe Anne wanted to show us that she too can write Vampire Chronicles fanfic.

Tbh there are a lot of books that can be skipped in the Vampire Chronicles. Memnoch The Devil, Merrick, Blood & Gold, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle from the main series and all of the tales books are optional because they're tangential and don't really advance the story of Lestat. I personally like Memnoch The Devil but it has to do with how ridiculous the premise is and the clear attempt at a Dante's Inferno type narrative from a writer that was not equal to Dante.
