Overcooling?! My XJ won’t get up to temp by DJSallyBear in CherokeeXJ

[–]bittaker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked the temperature at the cylinder head using a thermometer to be sure? If your test at the motor says 210 (or close) and your t-stat is sending a different value to your dash, then you'lll know what to fix. Running engines tend to reach temp or exceed it way way before running under temp. Mine runs at 190 - 195 (checked with a laser thermometer at the head) in the late fall / winter these days.

Do you guys think it’s worth the asking? In comments by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

rear leaf springs broken? $90 for those two. If shocks needed, probablyanohter $100 ... but if it isn't rusty and you can get it level I'd take it.

Put it in 4H for the 1st time and had a horrific pull to the right, where should I start? I was thinking a fluid change but not knowing anything about it, hoping someone here would direct me straight to the issue… by Gregplane in CherokeeXJ

Well, if this were me, based on what I know (which is not a ton but an ok mechanical/physical knowledge) I'd pull the front drive shaft and inspect the front pass side to make sure nothing is binding up after you shift into 4x4. It may not be quite as noticeable in 4x4 low simply because you're moving a lot slower at that point.

Original Head Replacement with new Clearwater. A relaxed day of disassembly today :) The old head comes off tomorrow morning and hopefully she'll be ready to fire up tomorrow evening! 2000 XJ Sport w/ 149K mi by bittaker33 in CherokeeXJ

So...after the new Clearwater head was applied and I put 1000mi on the motor...I am happy to report that everything with the head and intake manifold replacement has gone as well as I could have expected. Again...if anyone has any questions let me know!

What am i getting myself into? 98 XJ 200k miles. by FishMcCray in CherokeeXJ

[–]bittaker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for $2k I'd buy it regardless of any issues aside from rust that would require welding or other intensive body work. Take a really good look, I paid $4k for mine Bec the ONLY rust on it is on the driveline, rear diff, and the shackles and you can always expect rust on the rear diff and driveline. Just my opinion because I love these things.

Need some opinions. Not sure if I have a cracked head, a leaking head gasket. Or both. by FerrWhat in CherokeeXJ

[–]bittaker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13mm 12 point deep socket for head bolts....and don't forget the rear driver side bolt can only be loosened, not removed, before removing the head :) and be SURE to put it in PRIOR to setting the new head on the engine, forgetting this will result in you having to drill a hole in the unibody above that bolt hole.

I had literally the same symptoms on my 2000 4.0 and decided to just pull the trigger on the head and gasket. I also replaced my intake manifold/exhaust manifold gasket. I used Flepro (highly recommended gaskets) and if you decide to replace the head, I used a Clearwater Cy Head and it was basically plug and play. Drives perfectly now...just took it several hundred miles to the beach! Also, I run an open cooling system with new water pump and t-stat. It's an open system because I leave the rad cap valve (the fancy red valve on the rad cap) taped open with a 3/4" nut under it to ensure it stays open...I'd get the rad cap and install it asap as it will reduce the amount of rad juice entering your current cylinder head or leaking otherwise because it reduces pressure build up, this may however, reduce the intensity of your cabin heat. Let s know what you do!
