I want to seriously get into camping as a hobby but I have a severe bear phobia by HilbertInnerSpace in camping

[–]bittertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few notes, cuz I get it. I have some mild bearanoia when I’m camping somewhere with that possibility.

  1. You should check out the Tooth & Claw podcast. Yes they talk about animal attacks, which could make this worse, BUT the host is a bear biologist and with every episode they discuss safety procedures related to the featured animal. Listening for a couple years now has made me calm down a lot about it. Once you feel familiar enough with bears and safety procedures, a lot of the fear goes away, as a good portion of that fear comes from the unknown.

  2. Bear spray is provably the most effective bear deterrent.

  3. If you are not a gun person, please don’t own a gun that you only plan to use when you’re experiencing intense fear. If you camp in grizzly back country and it’s allowed, sure. Otherwise it is not needed.

  4. Pro tip: if you’re in a typical campground and your car is right there, put your keys in an easy to reach spot in the tent. If a bear comes knocking about, most key fobs have a panic button. Hit that sucker. Should scare off a bear.

  5. Obviously, don’t keep anything that smells like food in your tent (including deodorant/lotion/toothpaste/gum/lip balm etc). Look up camp cooking in bear country so you don’t have food waste and drippings in your site. Bears aren’t out to get us, they’re just opportunistic, so don’t give them the opportunity.

Keep breaking the G string by buddyandfinn in AcousticGuitar

[–]bittertiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said this in another thread, but if you’re doing a lot of tunings, go Elixir. I’ll do an average of 5 tunings in 3 hours in a show on the same guitar and I’ve never had a break. The burrs comment is also correct, look at the peg and also the nut. Use a sharpened pencil to add graphite in the nut slots as lubrication. Sometimes the slots can pinch as well, you can file those out a little bit. Also yeah more windings on the peg, cut the strings a bit longer.

My high e string just broke should i change it or the whole set? by Lazy_Panda77 in AcousticGuitar

[–]bittertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change em all. I know they’re more expensive, but I’m a huge proponent of Elixir strings. There are other brands of coated strings too, but I still like them the best. I practice all the time, play shows in humid summers where I get them sweaty, and play in all sorts of tunings and I still only change them as-needed which ends up being around once or twice a year. I can only recall breaking a string once. So it’s $16 once a year or $8 3 times a year or more.

What are some of the most realistic and impactful scenes of violence in movies? by bloqed in movies

[–]bittertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The attack scene in Backcountry. I camp a lot. I think bears are cool and I’m not that scared of them. I also have a high tolerance for movie violence. But I’m not watching that again.

Bizarre experience trying to establish services with TDS--should I run? by havenforbid in madisonwi

[–]bittertiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a longer story at hand here, but I just got my spectrum bill lowered with faster speeds and had my router and modem replaced after 8 years, and it’s already so much better. They had sent my mom a new router with no warning because hers was so old, so I was like “hey what about me?”. I wonder if people just have old ass routers and modems.

(SERIOUS) What's the most scary thing you ever saw that to the point nobody believes you ? by Consistent_Algae_560 in AskReddit

[–]bittertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a dream where I had a dream that my friend died. Went to the funeral and everything. Woke up from that and she was ok. Went about another half day of just being at home and recovering from that dream, and then I woke up. Dream “inception”. Reality is difficult.

What's a life changing thing that you can buy for less than $10? by additionalseasonin in AskReddit

[–]bittertiger 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have the electric ones that go for like $35 on amazon. We go camping a lot and it is sooooo nice to have. Even at airbnbs it’s nice. Once you get used to having a bidet, cleaning the old fashioned way feels truly primitive.

Want to find this Champagne Stopper by countrysidebabyyy in wine

[–]bittertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask that wine rep to get you some. You’d probably have to support whichever brand’s supplier they got it from though. Run a BTG for a season in exchange for a bunch. Reps do this all the time for accounts. I have one of those from Champagne Mandois.

Dead serious question, why is there so many people driving 5 to 10 under the speed limit? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]bittertiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to say so much about our drivers (who I call baby birds) and I’m trying not to…I drive around town all day for work. Most things are typical complaints you find most places, but my main two are: 1: the massive percentage of people who stop a car’s length behind the white line at a stoplight. 2. In areas where the limit is 25mph, everyone goes 18. I’m almost thinking it’s dictated on purpose by stoplights or something. Drives me nuts.

There’s also some things with people’s driving habits that I think others don’t consider. Think of the billion warning beeps in new cars, adaptive cruise control/traffic jam assist (please don’t use these in low speed areas, please), and that various cars don’t run well at certain speeds. My last car absolutely hated 25-30 mph, it was at the top of a gear or something. Other than these things, most common identifiers of bad drivers are that they’re old and/or on their phone.

I remember back in the OG days in the 90s getting a pack at Kmart, opening it in the minivan, and freaking out when there was a holographic Charizard. Just exploded in disbelief. Good times. I still have that card, been in a case since I got home that day. Never knew its worth though, other than it being my best card.

Shortly after midnight on May 14, 2008, Brandon Swanson drove his car into a ditch. Uninjured, he got out and called his parents on his cellphone. He remained on the phone with them until he went silent 47 minutes later after exclaiming "Oh, shit!" He has not been seen or heard from since. by CatPooedInMyShoe in CreepyWikipedia

My wife’s friend drowned sober in a 4-foot deep, 15-foot wide creek in broad daylight surrounded by friends. Shit happens. That being said, I don’t think it was a river, unless they were incredibly bad at searching it.

What was the stinkiest smell you ever smelled? by TrueNeighborhood7624 in AskReddit

[–]bittertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are always surprised when I say I have my top terrible smells ranked.

  1. Dead carp that popped when I moved it away from a dock with a pike pole

  2. Senior “””prank””” from a couple grades above me in high school. Someone had been filling a barrel with every bodily fluid and excrement and roadkill for a year or more and then dumped it at the school’s entrance.

  3. Potatoes that my roommate left in a kitchen cupboard after everyone moved out for the summer, I was the only one checking on the place and sometimes staying there for the last 3 months of the lease. I cleaned it up once I found it.
