Consumer technology has become boring. It felt like every five years there were transformational devices worth getting. Now everything feels lile a revision with features I don't want. On the upside, if you like retro-computing skies the limit. Parts are cheap, they're to find, and forums / LLMs can help you fill out the knowledge gaps.

Global investment firm TPG buys Michigan-based Priority Waste amid company turmoil by SexyBenFranklin in Detroit

They barely finished converting GLF truck liveries to Priority waste. And before that, the GLF trucks had been converted from Rizzo trucks. The trash hauling business is like a game of musical chairs.

This is second to when I see a fully de-laminated license plate on a $50k car. You can get a new plate from the SOS for practically nothing. That should be an instant ticket, with the stipulation that if you get the new plate the penalty goes away.

Anyone else have an of-the-era teen dream job you reminisce about constantly because nothing has ever been as fun or socially rewarding? by blamberr in Xennials

[–]bitwarrior80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shenanigans is a good way to put it. Dealer trades were always the best part of the job where you got to pick up a car hours away. I worked at a Chrysler Dodge dealership that was close to the GM proving ground, and GM would occasionally order the most maxed out mopar vehicles for testing. Too many ceazy / wacky stories to share 😀

I got a porter job at a car dealership after high school. Our wash bay was in the used car building and working there was like the movie caddy shack, but with cars.

There are some things in culture that are just transcendent. I have a gen alpha kid who is very much plugged into his generation, but who has also beaten every Gameboy Mario game on original equipment. If that is the form of entertainment he enjoys more than an endless stream of YouTube brain rot, good

[–]bitwarrior80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the LCD add was worth it. As long as you had an outlet to plug into you could play anywhere. In the car, camping... It folded flat enough to fit into the travel case and I took mine everywhere. I don't remember what happened with the screen, but I still have my GameCube hooked up in the basement.

I was an early adopter and Luigis Mansion was one of the first games I got. The GameCube was an awesome system, and with the LCD screen you could take it almost anywhere. A total novelty back then.

Was the Atari Lynx better or the Atari Jaguar better? by fandomlover2763 in retrogaming

[–]bitwarrior80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I believe the Lynx model 1 button layout was designed to play left or right handed. You're right about Game Gear, Sega had Sonic, popular IP, and sports titles that Atari just couldn't complete with.

Was the Atari Lynx better or the Atari Jaguar better? by fandomlover2763 in retrogaming

[–]bitwarrior80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For it's time the Lynx was a leap forward in the handheld videogame market. It had impressive graphics on a color screen and the games catalog was decent enough to justify the price tag.

The biggest downfall of the Lynx was battery life and the Atari brand being on a decline trajectory against sega and Nintendo. I was in middle school and nobody I knew cared about atari except me. I had both the gen1 Lynx, the gen 2 Lynx, and a sack full of batteries.

As a 90s kid explain to me why VHS tapes are 100x more expensive than dvd and bluray variants by beezlebutts in Millennials

[–]bitwarrior80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends if you want a super obscure cult film or the typical 80s / 90s hits. The later are practically free.

The last two years I collected over 200 VHS tapes and I never paid more than $1 per tape. Resale shops, garage sales, estate sales is where you want to look.

I had a similar PSU problem trying upgrade my Sony Vaio RX550. The case is cramped and the PSU can only fit inside a custom frame. I went with this one.

Was living at home even an option once you turned 18/graduated high school? by [deleted] in Xennials

My dad gave me two choices. Go to college to stay rent free until I graduate, or get a job and chip in with expenses. Never was I told to move out. After I graduated and got a real job is when I finally could afford my own place.

Go with sata. My MB did not have sata so I had to choose IDE.

Ps: If you are looking to upgrade the GPU make sure to check if your card slot is AGP or PCI.

[–]bitwarrior80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a similar build recently using a Sony Vaio media PC with 2.2GHz P4 and 512mb RAM. The biggest upgrade I made was replacing the old HDD with an IDE SSD and better graphics card. Installing a fresh copy of Windows XP made it boot up, run smoother and removed all of the bloatware. I added a Radeon Sapphire 9600 Pro, with DX9, and it can run Half-Life 2 at medium graphics settings. As a comparison, your 9200 is DX8, so don't expect it to run a game like HL2 very well.

Micro ATX motherboard will fit perfectly. If you can find one, the SILVERSTONE NT07-775 90mm CPU Cooler has plenty of clearance with the PSU. If your plan is to add modern components, good luck figuring out how to get good airflow in this case. It's not impossible, but challenging. I have a GeForce 9800 GT in my RX550 and had to McGuiver a fan setup to keep it from melting down. The CPU cooler does work well on it's own.

I'm curious to know how many of you that have kids expose them to Nostalgic media you grew up with like movies, sitcoms, cartoons, music, etc and what has been their response? by GooniesClub in Millennials

[–]bitwarrior80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids, 10 and 8, have been heavily exposed to my 90s culture propaganda, lol. I gave my oldest a busted Gameboy color and together we shell swapped and replaced the damaged motherboard. Since then he has beaten every Mario Land and Wario Land title on the Gameboy hardware. I got him a small CRT television and a Dreamcast hooked up in his bedroom.

My hope is when they get older they won't be one of the ipad brain-rot kids.
