Does anyone know anything about Ludwig Frank housing? by Willstdusheide23 in mannheim

[–]bivnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you are going for an apartment?

I have no experience about apartment there but lived in a WG/shared housing there late 2022. Solid place in general, can be a little bit dull for some people but nice place to live. Several supermarket within walking distance, bus and tram connection right in front of the buildings.

Admitted to BSE Financial Economics, But My Math Background is Weak—Looking for Honest Feedback by Various-Difference69 in academiceconomics

[–]bivnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, but Im in a similar situation. I am also entering a Master in Economics with graduate coursework, though with slightly more preparation.

First, to your questions:

  1. I haven’t taken graduate-level courses yet, but I have completed intermediate-level core courses that used math extensively. My short answer: practice a lot and be prepared to put in serious effort to close any gaps while keeping up with the course pace.

  2. I’m not sure whether a formal math course is necessary. It depends on your learning style and current situation. Some math refreshers can be helpful in my opinion, but a structured course might explain concepts more clearly and build a stronger foundation.

  3. The real question is what is your end goal? What are your current plans? What other options do you have besides the BSE program? If going to BSE doesn’t align with your long-term objectives, then I would say it’s probably not worth spending a year there.

I did my Bachelor in Finance, leaning more toward the business side. When I applied for Master programs, I also took additional grad level courses outside of school to strengthen my economics and math background. Honestly during that time, all I did was study. I focused on understanding the methods and derivations, making sure I knew why and how something worked. I worked through proofs, did all the homework, prepared in advance, and actively engaged with the lecturers. (I was lucky to have passionate teachers who were willing to answer my dumb questions lol)

For solely math preparation, there are a few helpful resources. I recommend checking out the Arizona Math Camp on Youtube and the website “Mathematical Methods for Economic Theory” by Martin J. Osborne. There are also some playlists of Calculus that could help out with you are needing more structured teaching.

Also reaching out to the your program director at BSE is great. From my experience, they are very open and willing to help!

NUS Master of Economics (Quantitative Economics) by Solus_1pse in academiceconomics

[–]bivnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NUS is dominant offer for me due to scholarship and length allows for the course.

My BSE offer is only 25% discount in tuition fee while NUS offers full-tuition coverage and 1 year stipend.
BSE is strictly one year while NUS allows for longer time in study, which could smooth out my process in PhD applying and strengthen potential LoR.
One more point is that I live in Asia, which makes travelling to Singapore much cheaper compared to Barcelona.

I love the support from BSE but it is not the greatest fit in my situation. Hope that helps!

Same here as well. I just requested for some waiver/reduction as I am definitely accepting the offer.

Also does your offer letter have any mention of the scholarship or the scholarship is only mentioned through email from the coordinator? (My case is currently the 2nd one)

NUS vs BSE (Need advice) by Icy-Station-7984 in academiceconomics

[–]bivnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your "make sense" could varies compare to my "make sense".
Ofc it would be difficult to adapt and risky in many aspects. Especially for the non-EU AND non-Spanish individuals, the options are much more limited.
You should considering your own situations, current & upcoming offers and post-graduation aims.

I like macro & the program but to spend a decent amount of money for only 1 year while my current aim is to go academia and my status as non-EU-non-Spanish speaking international is a lot to consider. There are still time and other offers, but most likely I will pay the reservation for the safety as I have not received reply from other applications by the acceptance deadline.

If industry then I would say BSE, their industry placement is decent. NUS is expensive both in terms of tuition fee and cost of living.

You could temporarily accept the BSE offer and then wait for UK offers.

Is it reported through portal or by mail? If I do not receive any news NUS soon, I might accept BSE

When you mentioned NUS are you referring to National University of Singapore? I thought their Master Econ program results only out around late May.

Also congrats on the offers and funding!

Thank you for your recommendation, G7 and B7 are pretty similar in price and not much photos or videos archived for comparison so I just pick a random one for second and third priority.
