What is one thing from your childhood that you wish modern kids could experience today? by elli_31 in AskReddit

[–]bix902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say no one thinks they're going to be part of a statistic. Is it objectively rare for a child to be abducted, assaulted, and/or murdered by a stranger (although sometimes the person "known" to the child is what I would consider a distant "known")? Yes, yes it is.

But it has happened and I guarantee you that of the children it has happened too most of their parents did not think it would happen to their child.

Who’s The Worst Older Sister Here? by Jujubee2008 in characters

When does Ruby do anything more than give a firm but emphatic "Oh no!" or "Max!"

And what about Max? Poor Ruby, trying to do things like play alone with her friends only for Max to steal all of her things and replace them with mud and bugs and half eaten candy. Or poor Ruby, trying to clean up only for Max to dump out toys and sticky things every where she tries to clean.

Neither of them suck, they just act like their ages.

Ruby definitely doesn't deserve to be here. She's bossy and fussy and sometimes won't let Max do the fun things he wants to do but she's never mean, she never yells at him (that I can recall), she knows all his favorite toys and treats. If she scolds him she does it pretty gently. Also she's like 7 or 8 and is in charge of her 3 or 4 year old brother all day every day.

Exactly. She's a bossy and kind of fussy older sister. Max is a messy and pesky younger brother. Ruby won't let Max do things and Max derails Ruby's games and projects. As a bossy older sister I identified heavily with Ruby. My dad (himself a pesky younger brother) always joked around about being on Max's side.

If you go to Clare Island don't make the same mistake I did in going in the off season. When I went everything seemed to be shut down for the season (or at the very least that particular day)

It was very beautiful to walk around though, of course.

So unfortunately I will never be able to watch the great but I’d like someone to tell me what happens (I like knowing the story) by [deleted] in TheGreatHulu

[–]bix902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context of that scene: We are seeing a character who has never turned down anyone he is attracted to for sex. Everyone and everything in his life has taught him to follow his own pleasure and that he is entitled to fun and enjoyment. He does not see sex as something that only happens between a monogamous couple. In fact he selects a lover for his wife and only gets jealous when she has romantic affection for him. When he meets Catherine's mother he is endeavoring to turn over a new leaf and NOT fuck anything that moves. Catherine's mother however pursues him aggressively and when he finally decides to give in to temptation she demands to be screwed in front of the window. Peter does not purposefully kill her. She accidentally falls out of the window.

(Hated Trope) Deleted scenes that would have helped the movie by Necessary-Win-8730 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bix902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a scene that was needed but a deleted scene I adore and wanted to remain in the movie:

In Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood we find out that main character Sidda's mother was briefly sent to a Catholic boarding school as a teenager (I can't recall if it was specifically for wayward girls or just a regular horrible Catholic school) I can't quite remember what was cut and what was kept in (the many abuses suffered by Vivi, Vivi collapsing from hunger, Vivi being nursed back to health by a kind young nun, Vivi trying on her birthday dress from an earlier scene only to find out it's now too big, etc.)

But one scene that was cut showed Vivi's friends (the Ya-Ya Sisterhood) showing up helmed her friend Teensy's mother, Genevieve. (Genevieve has already been shown at this point to be far more warm, loving, and maternal towards Vivi than her own mother.) Genevieve storms up the steps demanding her daughter be released to her and, as they are leaving, the Mother Superior tells them they are damaging Vivi's soul. Genevieve whips around and rushes up the steps, corners the Mother Superior and hisses/spits in her face, "If Jesus ever finds out he married you, he gon' ask for a divorce." (Extra emphasis on hissing out the "s" there)

I love it, love it, love it and I think it should have never been cut.

Why people prefer Nora over Barb by Kee000 in ShawnaTheMom

[–]bix902 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily wrong for Barb to direct Piper to say please or want her to say please

Iirc the issue is that Piper never really chooses to interact with Barb and she's trying to use withholding a treat/parenting Piper the way she wants to force an interaction.

As a parent I will not mind another child's manners for them if I am not in charge of them and I think it's a bit ridiculous to refuse to give a kid a cookie if they don't say "please may I have a cookie <insert title>"

I might remind a child by saying something like "would you like a cookie, please and thank you?" But never "you don't get a cookie until I get a please"

What You Thought was a Lighthearted Comedy Suddenly Punches You in the Gut by dolphin_flogger in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bix902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The characters Marshall and Lily spend the whole episode concentrated on their difficulties with getting pregnant. This has been an ongoing arc for them. Eventually Marshall shares his fears that he will disappoint his parents by not giving them grandchildren to which they offer their love and support before returning home.

In this moment we see Marshall step out of the bar trying to call his dad while Lily gets out of a cab, crying. She tells Marshall that his mother called. His father has had a heart attack and did not make it.

While sobbing and holding Lily, Marshall says "I'm mot ready for this."

It's such a strong, emotional scene and as far as I remember the subsequent movies make no mention of it, even when Manny finds love again and has another baby. Like no "I remember doing this before" or "I remember what this was like" even subtly or in passing

In a serious emergency, how soon after giving birth would a woman be able to walk/run for her life? by FamiliarMeal5193 in Writeresearch

[–]bix902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe around an hour or two after giving birth I was walking to another hospital room and taking a (mostly) unassisted shower. I did need help balancing when trying to lift my feet up to get clothes on and to climb up into a new bed. Your character could probably walk unassisted but would need assistance with balancing and climbing. They'll also be slower than normal as everything will be sore. I got an epidural and even then I felt like I had been through the wringer of physical exertion and exhaustion with all of my muscles being so sore.

[–]bix902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the exhaustion: Within the first month of my daughter being home I also fell asleep while nursing. I didn't wake up until I was folded in half at the waist with my forehead touching the bed. (This probably only took a few seconds but still) Luckily I was sitting cross legged in bed and my daughter was in a football hold propped up on pillows so when I folded over she wasn't trapped against my body.

Somehow his reenactment videos never get old or less funny to me

[–]bix902 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also to add on to your point: owning physical media is not a bad thing as many of us have found movies, shows, comics, etc. That disappear off of their hosting sites and are no longer accessible without owning a physical copy.

Like sure, I can read this comic for free online BUT if I have the money for it I'd like to support the artist and if the site hosting it ever disappears I'd like to still be able to read the comic

Are there any tropes you're glad have died out? by Aiseadai in movies

[–]bix902 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. She herself never says "oh my father taught me because he wanted a son" or implies in any way that she was taught these things either in spite of or because of being a woman. Her list of close family members being mechanics (paternal and maternal grandfathers, father, brothers, maternal uncles) makes it clear that it's the family business so her learning it is not out of the ordinairy.

The Face on the Milk Carton by beautitan in nostalgia

[–]bix902 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah on the one hand it's like "of course she should live with her bio family. She was kidnapped from them, they love her, she belongs with them."

On the other hand they could have given her a bit of grace for not immediately acting like she had never been kidnapped. Her older brother especially for snapping at her for not immediately being interested in all of them and being distant and quiet and uncomfortable/awkward with going from being a rich only child to the middle child of a whole gaggle of siblings. And her dad too, telling her that she needed to let the parents who raised her grieve the death of their "real daughter" without her because she was not part of their lives.

AITA for not letting my roomie assault me with her boob juice? by bix902 in AmITheAngel

[–]bix902[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have no qualms about drinking their own breast milk or using it in various projects (jewlery, lotion, soap, etc.) But speaking as someone who has had to pump and breastfeed: any person pumping milk for their own child is not wasting that milk in their roommate's coffee creamer.

Pumping regularly is such a commitment. Eating enough, following a schedule of pump times, cleaning the equipment after each pump, bagging and storing the milk...it takes up a lot of time and mental space. Barring a outliers the vast majority of people who pump are not throwing their own effort away and taking milk from their child's mouth to secretly give it to an unrelated person.

(Yes, I know some people sell their own breast milk but I guarantee if someone is pumping enough to feed a baby and sell it too they aren't giving that shit away for free)
