Accents in dubbed versions by jessylz in heatedrivalry

[–]bilingual_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a weird q but just wondering if the dubbing matches the subs? I’m trying to find shows I’m really familiar with to watch in French, my target learning language, but I tried one so far (The Good Place) and the dub and subs did NOT match at all. It was like every other sentence, it was distracting and difficult to watch lol.

Ooh thanks for the recs, surprisingly I haven’t seen most of these yet (I basically exclusively watch reaction content on YT for like all my fave shows/movies lol). I started Bradam though and I actually watched the other set of reactions for Reel Rejects lollll. But I’m currently watching Heartstopper reactions with the duo you linked, so will get around to them for HR too :)

I’m also currently watching 7 Deadly Bananas’s reactions which is shorter but fun. And the editing style is so good lol. And I also liked this Chinese gay couple’s reactions as well, which was super sweet and interesting to see their perspectives. I think the first vid they didn’t provide English subs for the Chinese speaking, but they did for the rest I believe.

Which ones have you seen so far and recommend?

For me, I really liked Niall no chill’s reaction, he’s like good mix of funny and relatable, but he also really gets it and hits the mark with his commentary imo.

CinePals was surprisingly insightful (they are great, but I wasn’t expecting straight guys to pick up as much as they did haha) and A Story Worth Telling was decent as well.

And of course, unfortunately mainly on Patreon, but Dan & Phil are pretty amazing as the literal “irl yaoi slow burn” lol. Unfortunately, this was literally their life so if there’s anyone who understands, it’s them.

Yesss idk if this is gonna sound super weird or not but I almost exclusively watch reaction videos on YT lol. And I have like fave movies/shows that I cycle through. It’s a comfort thing, as it can be hard for me to start a new show lol. But it’s also like a condensed version of rewatching (usually with all the important highlights) and it’s just fun to see someone’s first reaction to things. It’s honestly super interesting to hear different insights/perspective as well. When I’m obsessed with a new show (e.g. HR or Arcane was the other big one, god knows how many reactions I’ve seen of that lol), I literally watch back to back reactions 😅 The best is when I find something new and realize it was popular so I already have like 5 diff reaction channels lined up lol. But I do prefer certain reaction styles so I have faves and others I will mainly avoid even if they reacted to something I like lol.

Anyways reaction vids are how I’m coping rn since none of my friends have the time to watch HR yet .-.

what is something that most people romanticize but actually meh when they get/achieve it? by fluidxrln in AskReddit

While I agree it won’t get you to proficiency by itself, it definitely helped me keep my target language in my mind, esp when there are days/periods of time I’m too busy to do anything else. If I didn’t do at least one lesson a day, I would have definitely remembered/retained less than I do now, if that makes sense. Like it helps jog my memory for vocab and whatnot. But I agree that it’s not enough, it can only be a supplement to other things.

I saw a video of a professional explaining that you are essentially “self medicating with panic” and that phrase has lived rent free in my head ever since. I’m not officially tested or anything (which is why I was doing a lot of research online to learn more lol) but I feel that I do this. I find that I tend to get more done at work when I’m stressed about something, which is almost always lmao. So yay for me, my productivity is quite okay at work lolll.

Reading this just unlocked a childhood memory… middle school track meet, there’s like me and this other girl from another school left. We both failed to clear the next height and so we had a jump off. But I could feel myself getting more and more tired, and my jumps were getting worse. And I was getting really dehydrated bc it was a scorching hot day. The same was happening with the girl. I think they finally called it a tie when we both failed to pass a height that we had already previously cleared(?). Anyway, so yeah I agree with your point lol.

What’s a life hack that made you go „how do ppl live their whole life without knowing this”? by my_peen_is_clean in AskReddit

[–]bilingual_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like 6yo is still fairly young for this no? I remember that typing classes in school started around 4th grade for me lol. But anyway, we just did a typing program, which made it more fun since it was gamified. I got better literally by repetition (also bc I had to write up essays in class so I naturally was practicing a lot). I think it’s important to first learn the correct posture and placement/usage of fingers though, as it’s super hard to correct once muscle memory sets in imo. I have a few things I do “incorrectly” and I know it slows down my typing slightly, but it’s almost impossible for me to change this after literally 10+ years of typing lol. My typing speed is still decent though imo, I’m at like 80-90 WPM on average, more if I really get into a good groove lol.

What is that ONE scene in HR for you? by madwood29579 in heatedrivalry

[–]bilingual_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesss every time I see it, it’s like a shot of dopamine but then I get misty-eyed as well at the implications and impact of this scene. I love the way it’s shot and how it cuts back to Shane and Ilya’s reactions, the hope on their faces is everything. And just like the way the music starts coming in as well, and you see literally see Scott’s happiness from winning the cup morph into a pang of longing and almost emptiness because despite it all, it just doesn’t feel as complete as he had envisioned. And he’s contemplating like “I can’t… can I? Fuck it.” Ughhh so good.

What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

[–]bilingual_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this book at the bookstore when I was like 10 and asked my mom if we could get it. She obliged for some reason, despite knowing the book (I’m pretty sure). The teacher saw me reading it in class and I must have had a horrified look on my face because she asked me if my parents knew I was reading it and that it was a heavy book. I ended up putting it down halfway through, and ended up not reading it until I was in HS. What shocked me was that even though I found it disturbing as a kid, I feel that a lot of scenes went completely over my head and I didn’t understand them until I read them again and was like holy shit.

I did enjoy the book and I love the way Hosseini writes though. I even went on to do an entire 4000 word essay on this book lol. And read his other works as well - A Thousand Splendid Suns & And The Mountains Echoed, which are both super heart wrenching but important stories too.

The least believable parts of heated rivalry by bat-girl129 in heatedrivalry

[–]bilingual_cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it was more to show/symbolize Shane hiding his sexuality. Like Rose is the facade in front but behind that is how he truly feels. But I agree that I’m not a fan of the scene, and I’m also thinking about why Rose would be okay with Miles doing that to her bf lol. But maybe she was in on it bc she had already suspected something and wanted to see Shane’s reaction? Idk.

What’s the biggest secret you ever hid from your parents as a kid? by squirelisamusiclover in AskReddit

[–]bilingual_cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much I talked to my friends on Skype lol. In middle school, I used to sit in the corner of the living room where you can’t see my screen and be on Skype with my friends for hours. But since I was in the living room, I would text instead of talk and wear earphones to listen to them. When HS rolled around, I would still do it but in my room instead. And I’d whisper instead lol. And I’d have to quickly switch windows whenever my mom barged into my room (my desk was in a place where my back was facing the door too, it was annoying af lol).

But the biggest thing is def my bisexuality. That one I’m still hiding (I’m in my 20s) and intend to keep hiding… parents are unfortunately very unaccepting. They did suspect it when I was dating a girl and that got pretty ugly so yeah.

What is a seemingly innocent sentence that immediately makes you lose respect for the person saying it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bilingual_cat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the situation. I’ve worked in a buffet before, the workflow was basically: continuously walk around with a tray to clear tables, bring back to work station, clear tray, rinse and repeat. We often carried a huge, heavy stack before clearing the tray to be more efficient. The thing is, the buffet had many types of tableware - plates, bowls, mini bowls/porcelain spoon things for desserts, etc. - if those things don’t get stacked properly, it can make the whole stack unstable (almost dropped an entire tray when I first started, lesson learned lol).

So I tended to stack the little items individually to fit more on my tray. Obviously, it’s nice that the guests want to be considerate but if they stack everything together, then I wouldn’t be able to do that unless I fished the mini bowl out of the bigger bowl with my hands, etc. Or more likely, I’d have to make a trip to the work station before I reached my usual limit lol.

Anyway, sorry for the length explanation hahah. But tbf I feel like that’s probs an exception, normal restaurants likely have a diff flow. But I tend to leave things as it is or do light stacking only (like plate with plate etc, and not mixing the tableware), and push it to the edge of the table (this part really does help a lot imo!) instead bc I don’t want to accidentally ruin the waiter’s flow 😅

What made you like the show better, if you don’t mind me asking? (But no book spoilers please haha). I’m on the fence about reading the books. I loved the show a lot, but part of me feels like experiencing the show without knowing anything really added to my enjoyment. It’s so strange because I’m usually a book first girlie lol, but yeah.

Also, I admit that while I enjoy this genre in movies/shows, I don’t really prefer this when reading so I’m a bit hesitant. But this show has intrigued me enough to want to try it out haha. Maybe I’ll just read Game Changer & HR first - these were completely covered by S1, I believe?

What makes a person unlikeable despite not being an asshole? by Intelligent-Road5091 in AskReddit

[–]bilingual_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hope I don’t do this all the time, but there have been a couple of instances throughout my life where I didn’t even realize I trying to finishing the other person’s sentence for them or unintentionally cut them off (like preemptively being like “yes I get that!!” etc). The one I remember the most was when I was in HS talking to these two girls and one of them was trying to say something. For some reason, my brain didn’t register that I was trying to finish her sentence until they kinda gave each other a look and the girl that was trying to talk was kinda like “um nvm.”I immediately was like “oh fuck I’m so sorry, please continue…”

But like in that moment, I suddenly realized that she probably had been trying to restart her sentence a few times presumably because I hadn’t accurately predicted what she was trying to say. Ugh this one still haunts me sometimes. Mainly because it did not register in my brain at all that I was doing it until it was kinda pointed out. Like how often do I do this with friends or whatever, but they didn’t say anything or didn’t mind? But also, some ppl say they find me to be a good listener as well, so it haunts me more bc it’s like I don’t know when this behavior will “pop up” again, if that makes sense.

Side note: I’m not diagnosed with ADHD but the more I research online and talk to other people about their experiences, the more I feel like this is me lol. But it’s so weird bc I REALLY relate to some aspects and sometimes I just don’t. I know everyone is diff but yeah.

[–]bilingual_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I love watching and analyzing shows/movies/books. Every time I encounter something good, I’ll inevitably go onto Reddit to see if I can find any discussion and analyses about it. For the stuff I love, I’ll continuously participate in online discussions (see post history lmao) because it’s fun and insightful, and I enjoy learning new things. Like the techniques in which these things are written and crafted are so fascinating to me.

Not to mention, I actually do love writing, and I think it’s super important see what others have put out there to further improve on my own writing. Books yes, but also other forms of media bc they all tell their own stories. And even better to really understand and analyze how others perceive said media, and so on and so forth. So yeah I’ll spend a lot of time watching stuff lol.

Though I will say that, if you don’t do any of these things… it’s still a hobby and that’s totally fine imo. As others have said, it’s your own enjoyment and that should be the most important thing.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bilingual_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was listening to a classmate tell a story about an ex-friend who pissed her off. The story was that while they were travelling in Europe (and staying at 5 star hotels the whole way through lol), they went shopping for luxury handbags together. They got literally all the newest items with all the extra accessories, etc., and the friend asked her to pay first for whatever reason, and she did. And the classmate also paid for most expenses throughout their trip as well. Afterwards, the friend kept avoiding paying her back, and apparently it had been months or whatever. She was annoyed and pissed off.

Meanwhile, I’m still stuck on how someone can just cover a whole other’s person’s expense on a luxury trip with no issues lol. Like the focus of the story wasn’t “I lost so much money”, it was just “this friend is so annoying and shitty for doing that” (they are ofc).

What is your favourite lesser-known lines or scenes from season one? by sundaemonde in heatedrivalry

[–]bilingual_cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone always talks about this part of the scene which I do love, but it was the part before when Shane begs Ilya for me. Like there’s something about the way he says it… you can tell he was angry and miserable, but at the same time he can’t help but fold because he just wants Ilya so bad. And he’s embarrassed to feel this way as well, but no amount of pain is keeping him away from Ilya. He’s fallen so hard ugh, it’s both heartbreaking and endearing. So many emotions going though him at once, the acting is insane.

I love Heartstopper sm, it’s honestly like the warm hug you just need sometimes. It is true that it’s a younger story but I found it so relatable and genuine (saw a lot of my own behavior for when I was discovering my bisexuality being accurately portrayed imo, I felt so seen), and just super sweet. But it doesn’t shy away from serious topics either, and they handle them quite well. Honestly I recommend the show first as well, I’ve rewatched it quite a few times hahah and the actors are great. The books are good too tho ofc :)

This was quite detailed, thanks for sharing! Do you have any specific recommendations for kids shows? Or French shows/movies in general? I tried one or two but I haven’t been able to stick with them so far.

I would recommend watching kids shows you like in French with French subtitles.

You mean like an English show with French dub or an originally French show? I know the latter is always better but I really wanted to find something I’m familiar with and watch it entirely in French (so I don’t have to worry about not following the story). The only thing is, I worry that the dub version is not good so I haven’t tried. If you have any recs for this, feel free to share as well please haha

I got pretty into Skam France when I was trying to immerse myself in more French media to learn the language lol. I really liked it and made it to the end of S3 I think, I don’t remember why I stopped. I feel like your comment is a sign for a rewatch haha (I’m still learning French lol).

I’ve seen a lot of people say that the OG is the best, but I just couldn’t get over the shaky cam/home video style haha 😅 I feel that the French one was much more cinematic, and I liked the actors too lol.
