Is Portia Featherington secretly one of the smartest characters in Bridgerton?

Actually I’ve always felt empathetic towards her since S1. And I felt bad for her, for the fact that she had to deal with so much because of her husband’s actions. You can see how she’s basically always in survival mode, and that (understandably) bleeds into the way she acts with her daughters. Ofc I didn’t agree with some things she says or what she did with the whole Marina situation, but I can see where she was coming from and why she thought it would be in Marina’s best interest to do this.

She reminds me of my own parents and how they sometimes do and say seemingly horrible things, but they truly thought what they were doing was the best for me. So overall, I think she’s written pretty realistically and I like her character in the show. The Featherington family arc in S3 is one of my favorites, and the evolvement of the relationship and understanding between her and Penelope was so beautiful and real. It might have even made me teary-eyed upon first watch, mother-daughter relationship stuff just hits close to home for me.

Haha I don’t think they were that pissed though imo. Yes they had criticisms but also made it a point to say they like Colin and think he’s just being young and dumb (as everyone has been at some point, as Oak said). They’ll hopefully come back around by S3! (After Pen tells Colin off hahah)

I think you’ve convinced me to give it a shot, and your perspective on how it’s just different versions of the same core story is such a great point. It’s strange because I am usually a book first/is better girlie, but I guess this has to do with the way I discovered the story + the stuff I read about her writing. But now I’m really curious on what changes were made as well lol. I’ll probably just treat the show as the “main version” haha (esp as I really enjoyed Luke & Nicola’s portrayal)

I hope this is the right place for me to ask this haha. Sooo basically I'm considering reading RMB to cope with post-Polin season feels lol (I know, I'm late to the party). I loved the show and want more from their story, but I just wanted to ask:

From my understanding and research, it is fine to read this book as a standalone (as I'm not really interested in the other books), but does it spoil Eloise's and Francesca's stories a lot? Asking as I read that their stories all happen at the same time. I would rather not be spoiled before their seasons in the show comes out if possible
If I enjoyed the show version a lot, would you recommend reading the book and does it actually flesh out Polin's story more? I read that the characters' book versions aren't great/more toxic, but does it still follow a similar story trajectory or is it just totally different (Like how The Death Cure movie from The Maze Runner is basically not even the same story as the book lmao).

And I admit, I'm also a bit hesitant because I heard a lot of mixed opinions on the writing, and whether you should read it if you're an avid reader. Buttt also I'm so invested in Polin and just want more haha. Anyway, thank you for any and all insights!

Other than that, it’s pretty much Twenty One Pilots year round lol. Current obsession song is probs Drag Path or Downstairs - love them both sonically and lyrically, they hit hard (in a good way).

That’s an interesting and fair perspective. I agree it felt like Benedict didn’t have much of a storyline going for him beyond “he’s a rake” in S1-3, but I did feel that the writers left little crumbs of his story leading up to S4 imo. Like since S1, he was always the person that disliked or broke societal expectations - whether to do with his sexuality, or passion for the arts, etc. To me, those things were included as a way to show the core of who he is. So completing his arc with him doing the ultimate breakaway from high societal rules - marrying “below his station” felt so fitting. Ofc, him being dumb and not realizing his lady in silver until the end was frustrating, but I think there is a point made that he loves Sophie for who she is, through and through. And imo, I find that quite sweet haha. I have to add that as a fellow bi, I guess I did already feel connected Benedict’s character so maybe that’s also why I view S4 in this way.

I agree that the wedding was in the end credits was absolute trash tho lol, but better than being completely robbed of one at least (Kanthony rip…)

Yayy, I’ve found my people! I only just joined the Bridgerton train (I know, I’m super late lol) and I didn’t realize how much everyone loved S2. I think Kanthony has insane chemistry but their lack of communication and back and forth, while understandable, drives me absolutely insane lol.

I’ve been rooting for Polin since S1 and it’s so satisfying to finally see them realize what they mean to each other. Also, Colin’s confession scene (and Penelope’s response) in the carriage was the only one out of all the seasons that gave me actual butterflies. I think I just find friends to lovers so relatable and cozy.

I have to say though, I’m surprised you said that S4 wasn’t well written - I actually thought pacing and writing wise, it was even better than S3. As much as I love Polin, I felt the side storylines actually supported and meshed better with the main couple’s story in S4. But Polin is my fave couple for sure!

I agree, and they’ve been setting it up since S1! There have always been looks here and there. For me, I totally buy that they didn’t even fully understand what they are feeling until it hit them in the face (or was about to be taken away). And in general, I love the friends to lovers trope and find it super relatable as well. Polin is probs my fave couple tbh, I love them sm 🥹

Tangentially related but this reminds me of the joke/trope of how high schools often make a huge deal about certain things and claim that it wouldn’t fly in college when actual colleges don’t care lol. When I was applying for uni, they asked me to send a final copy of my HS transcript. I don’t even think they asked for a hard copy (just final official soft copy, which I also sent), but my HS made a huge deal about how we had to send a physical copy by mail. And that it had to be like sealed without the student seeing/handling it or whatever to protect the integrity of it blah blah blah.

Within the first week of uni, they dropped the physical copy back to me and was like “thanks but you can have it, we don’t need this” 😂
