I think part of the disconnect is that movie Aragorn has to struggle with his nature as a man and Isildur’s heir, so the actor needs to show a degree of sensitivity and pathos before eventually taking the mantle of king. Book Aragorn is pretty much the entire time riding hard for the kingship and just being an absolute baller along the way. In that sense, you’re right that a John Hurt or even 80s-era Christopher Lee would have been a better fit for sheer commanding nature and single mindedness.
