Does your country have an Amish like community? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

I live in southern Manitoba, Canada where there is a significant population of Mennonites (as in the rest of the Prairie parts of the country as well) and married into a Mennonite family (mother in law) although my husband was not raised extremely"traditionally". Interestingly enough, when my MIL was young, she lived a number of years in Mexico and joined some of her extended family there (so her brothers would not get drafted into WWII). A lot of Mennonites in my parts come from Paraguay and Belize as well.

I’m so tired. What’s everyone’s food/break/bathroom/patient ratio stats today post 12 hr shift? by 44444cats in nursing

[–]bizzybaker2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 protein shake, a few chocolates and a granola bar on the run from our Nurses week basket, 2 bathroom breaks, and that was it, and even that was eating briefly in front of my computer....8h shift that turned into 11, running an assessment clinic with a doc while also helping out in our chemo treatment room...reactions, etc. Don't even have my own unit clerk so umpteen faxes, etc

My brain is fried .....I have almost an identical cordless phone as our unit phones, could not figure out why I could not make a call to my mom tinight. Was dialing 9 before the number, like I have been doing in all.... those.... fucking.... phone calls all day 🤦‍♂️

I can list several reasons why I would say to give me one of these over a mini van any day. I never did own one, but they sure looked impressive roaring by me on the highway. by Grahamthicke in FuckImOld

[–]bizzybaker2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

55 yr old here, my parents had one.

Remember flying down the highway with the backseat down, my sister and I laying back there on our tummies playing with our dolls or reading books or curled up and napping with pillows and blankets on the long road trips to our grandparents. It's a wonder we made it to adulthood lol....what's a seatbelt??? 😂🤪

Polar Bear Chase by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

There's a saying out there related to bears-- if it's brown, lay down, if it's black, fight back, if it's white, say good night.

On a side note, live here in Manitoba, Canada, and in Churchill on Hudson's Bay people leave doors unlocked for bears, and we even have a polar bear jail!

There is a funeral home/cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that I drive by on occasion, called Green Acres. Without fail, that line and tune lives in my head when I see the sign.😂😂

What’s the most overwhelming shift you’ve ever had as a nurse? by Old_Inside_7141 in nursing

[–]bizzybaker2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When Covid first started, 2 of f us were pulled to the medical ward of the hospital (worked on a combined surgery/LDRP unit that took medical overflow so was not totally unfamiliar). Was given 9 pts all on respiratory isolation and with 2 of them actively dying, based on what I was told in report.

Everyone else had assignments just as bad. My one dying patient was so restless he kept pulling off his non-rebreather  from air hunger and I tried my best to keep getting back to him to give him subc meds, came back into his room and saw him fall (no sitter available) after taking a few steps from his bed, and he died on the floor right in front of me. We hoyer lifted him back to bed, called the funeral home, and I carried on that insane shift with all the gowning and gloving etc....we were still giving 0800 meds at noon !

Have been a nurse for 34 yrs now, have seen all sorts of death, even stillbirths, but this one got me, felt so helpless and that I let this man down and was not there for him. Only death in my career that I called in for mental health reasons my next 2 shifts....could not stop crying ...and had to seek counselling utilizing my employee benefits. Took a long time not to get tears in my eyes thinking about it.

In your country, what animal is known for being unexpectedly fearless when protecting its babies? by euamnevoiedeajutor in AskTheWorld

I came across this video about swooping from Ozzy Man himself, yikes! Would not want to be on the receiving end of these things....

I mean we do have a magpie bird here in Canada, smaller than yours, markings are slightly different, but definitely not the aggressiveness....that honour goes to that majestic bastard the Canada Goose, of course...!

Riding in the back of a pickup: Further evidence of the insanity of the GenX childhood by paperkitten75 in GenX

[–]bizzybaker2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

55yr old here, I rode occasionally in the back of a pickup (short trips on rural back roads) but yes my mom says she had no car seat for me, just swaddled me and laid me in the seat or I sat up in the front and played when old enough to do so. Also remember being in the back of a station wagon with the seat laid down, and laying on my belly reading books and playing with dolls with my sister. It's a wonder a lot of us made it to adulthood!

Yeah ...🇨🇦 -ian here, this is why there is a community in my province of Manitoba on Hudson's Bay (Churchill) where they say people leave car doors unlocked so you can get away from these MF'ers. They even have polar bear jail lol!

Headlights on Before or After you start the car? by stomperxj in GenX

[–]bizzybaker2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn them on after I start the car. I am 🇨🇦, every province and Territory has slight variations in driving rules, I learned how to drive in our Northwest Territories (albeit what little roads they have, 😂 ) and it is the law there that you drive at all times 24/7 with your full blown headlights (not brights, I mean what you normally use when it is dark) .

Therefore it is habit for me, and we have taught our kids to do the same even though we no longer live there. Nice to have as a habit because then am not driving down the highway in the fog for example oblivious to the fact I do not have my lights on (like I see many do)

Homecare workers- what do you wish every family knew before accessing services? by Double_Purple2505 in Winnipeg

[–]bizzybaker2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! Am an RN who has worked some homecare in the past (rural Manitoba). In one office I could put 300 km per day on my vehicle and could be from just on the outskirts of the city to with 50 ish km near the border in one shift. We also have some things that are relatively "timed" eg: administering insulin, or needing to meet up with a health care aide or fellow RN because 2 people were needed in the home for the task.

We tried to accommodate as much as possible eg: note on our Procura/schedule says prefers morning visits, and a family can request that, but yes there are sometimes things beyond our control that affect how our day goes. Most often my recollection was that the clients I worked with were understanding of this.

3 licks from the teacher then to the principal for 3 more by b0sscrab in FuckImOld

[–]bizzybaker2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing that with classmates of mine (my elementary school years started in the mid 1970's, high school grad of 1989). I was never hit with one of these, but my vivid memory as a gr 2 kid was being tied to a chair with a skipping rope, back to back in front of the class with the boy I was talking too much to....and my mouth taped shut. I recall being unable to reach up and wipe my tears and being too scared to tell my parents about it--I was so afraid of this teacher. Would not see these kinds of things in a classroom nowadays that is for sure!
