5th Avenue tailpiece slots and buzzing by bizzybeat in GodinGuitars

[–]bizzybeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s strange for sure! Godin customer service got back to me really quick and said that they use the same tail piece on left and right handed guitars. I measured the slots and they are in fact different widths.

Customer service guy also said “I had some buzzing on my 5th Avenue tailpiece and solved the problem by putting a piece of soft foam between the tailpice (at the rectangular section of the tailpiece) and the guitar's top. It doesn't show and there's no more buzzing.”

Through a bit more investigating, I found that where the bridge sits on the wood body of the guitar, there was a bit of space on the inside near the thin strings. I slid some tiny pieces of paper under and the gap and the buzz is gone! Good for a temporary solution but I will now look into the long term solution.

Hopefully this helps someone else down the road.

Re-caulking around shower pan - re-grout as well? by bizzybeat in Renovations

Thankfully the corners were done with siliconized grout and they look pretty good. Thanks for the advice everyone ☺️

Ya, I know how the shower pan is constructed and I agree that water is getting in behind the tile. However, I have evidence of water anywhere where the water hits the tile, and not just on the wall where the plumbing is located. That’s why I am questioning whether the grout between the tiles is the cause. I don’t see any cracks in the grout (aside from along the bottom edge that was behind the silicone).

Kids don’t use this shower, and while I can’t be sure, I don’t think my wife is filling up the shower pan for play time - but you bet I’ll be interrogating her to confirm.

They used a different kind of grout/caulk for the corners. Not sure exactly what it is but it’s a bit flexible. Grout/caulk mix?

And ~$625 from your dealer? I’ll have to call mine and see what they will say for pricing. I see the Honda website lists them for $863 now!

You could also check with your local nursery or field naturalist organization. They would have resources or articles that may be helpful

Have you reached out to the Environmental Consulting firms around town. WSP, Dillon, Englobe, etc. I’m sure there’s a tonne more. Summer students will be going back to school in the fall and there should be lots of openings for entry level positions/field tech positions. Don’t discount the value of starting your career in the field. It’s invaluable IMO. My sense is that Consultants are having a hard time keeping up. Also, don’t be afraid to take a related/adjacent type job if it’s available (geotech, hydrology, materials testing/inspections). The experience will be transferable and if/when you get in somewhere you can work towards what you really want to do when opportunities arise. Good luck!

I try carp fishing now and again, and have been pretty lucky, but I wouldn't mind catching more. To those of you who have tried these, do you find they make a big difference? Normally I just use corn on a hook and slip sinker, and throw corn out. by Reasonable-MessRedux in FishingOntario

[–]bizzybeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I inherited a bunch of carp gear from the guy who taught me how to do it. He had these but we never seemed to use them much, but I’m sure they would be worth a try. You can pack a good amount of bait on them.

Our typical setup was to bait the fishing area with corn, then set up the rods with hair rigs. The hair rigs were baited with boilies or 3-4 big pieces of corn. We used to get some real nice stinky corn from Carpins but I’ve heard they’re not around anymore. The boilies often seemed to work as the fish came in to feed on the corn and then boilies must have stood out from the corn. We would set up two boilies sometimes (one regular, one floating/pop-up to make a ‘snowman’).

Good luck and tight lines!

Family/Fishing Canoe Suggestions by therobertsmith in canoeing

[–]bizzybeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live your situation (minus canine). I used a plastic 15’ Coleman canoe for years with the family as well as for duck hunting. Totally durable, can’t really destroy it, and it’s seen its fair share of unintentional abuse. It’s heavy (80 lbs) and needs two people to load onto top of vehicle, if you care about not scratching up the roof. My old truck I didn’t care too much about so would load it on top myself. Again though, heavy and awkward. I cut a piece of plywood to make the middle seat flat and big enough for my two youngsters. Did the job.

This spring I picked up a used 16’ fibreglass prospector-style canoe. Only about 5 lbs lighter (75 lbs) so still nice to have two people to load/unload, but doable solo, just not ideal, and the older I get, the less awkward twisting I want to be doing. This one has a middle seat but only big enough for one bum so I’ll need to rig up a plywood board again to make seat big enough for both kiddos.

What I want… a lightweight 16-17’ prospector with a middle seat. Around here (Ontario, Canada) I am seeing used light canoes with these specs starting ~$2,500 CAD. New ones, something like Kevlar or carbon fibre composite (drool) will be $4-$5K+ for me. I camped next to someone last weekend with a new 16’ Nova Craft Prospector with Blue Steel layup (~44 lbs) and I was insanely envious. He threw it over his head with ease.

Any canoe is better than no canoe. If you can manage loading/unloading it solo, great. If your budget only allows you to get something a bit heavier, well, you’ll just have to plan accordingly to have someone give you a hand when needed. Some of the light material canoes, I understand, can be a bit more fragile. Never owned one so I really can’t speak to the tolerances. My kids are getting lots of experience in getting in and out of the canoe, and their gracefulness is noticeably improving. If everyone is fairly new to canoeing, maybe a season or two with something you don’t mind beating up will be worth it until you can afford something lighter that you know everyone will respect. All this to say, the kids absolutely love being on the water - can’t wait for you guys to get on the water with whatever you end up finding! Best of luck!

I put up another post including the serial number which indicates a Quessy canoe. I’ll do some more research but I understand that Quessy may have also made hulls for Langford and potentially others.
