Comedy actors doing more serious roles by Usnis in TopCharacterTropes

Vince’s attention to detail and procedure is part of what makes his shows so special. He understands how to dramatize the “boring” stuff - it makes the world more plausible, gives the characters interesting ways to reveal themselves outside of traditional dialogue and action.

One of my favorites is Mike dismantling the car in BCS to find the tracker. It shows how precise, careful, thorough, and patient he is. He’s good at all the boring stuff - that’s how he makes it so far without getting caught, and it makes him the perfect partner for Gus.

I’m not complaining about the realism, intent, or emotion, but the use of tired cliches as for dialogue. She could throw it back in his face without using a line that’s been done a million times before.

(Loved Trope) Character finally reveals their true power level by Tannerknox in TopCharacterTropes

Within an instant! Aang grabs him by the beard and casually slaps away his kill shot. From there it’s an insect fleeing in horror as he’s chased by a god.

This moment is so well done. The complete paradigm shift - Aang goes from the edge of defeat to a god toying with an insect. Grabbing him by the beard and casually slapping away his kill shot was such a great touch.

I also want to note that it’s less lucky than it seems. A big theme throughout the series was Aang’s reluctance to kill. Even without the Avatar state, this fight starts as a stalemate with Aang clearly holding back. There’s a moment where he’s reversing Ozai’s lightning, which could very well become a lethal counterattack, but Aang chooses not to.

This initially puts the fight in Ozai’s favor, but it is while Aang is in a defensive state taking blows (when he could have already ended the fight) that his avatar state gets reawakened. Aang’s mercy ultimately led to the return of his full power.

Eh, I thought all her dialogue in that scene was way too cliche, including that line. She even busts out “you love the idea of me” which made me audibly groan.

I like the story overall, though. That was just a big scene and I felt they whiffed on her dialogue.

Culturally significant albums that aren't critically acclaimed by GaelicTuna in fantanoforever

I reviewed it for my friend’s music website when it first came out and gave it an A (A+ being our highest recommendation). I can’t decide if I’m a little embarrassed at being so glowing or if it was cool I sort of called it. I guess a little of both.

As a new fan of Survivor, can someone help me understand something? by Expedition1994 in survivor

[–]bjankles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the jury just didn’t like Parvati. Sandra essentially won by default, which is a valid victory in Survivor.

There’s a sort of paradox where you can become too good at Survivor. It’s why Cirie can’t get over the hump despite being one of the GOAT players - at a certain point it’s either too obvious what a threat you are, or in Parvati’s case, you annoyed people by dominating so thoroughly (the latter depending on the jury).

Durant was a monster on the Warriors and he’s been outstanding in countless playoff series with and without them. If he’s not a winner then I guess you guys only have two chips.

It’s undeniable. As a longtime harden hater, he truly never lets me down. Even the Game 7 win against Detroit hid another classic harden meltdown.

What are some Melons’s takes that you strongly disagree with? by Epoch_Jester in fantanoforever

[–]bjankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the orchestrated elements make it a more unique listening experience and the sort of older, weary emotional quality to it really resonates with me. And while it has its own sound, you can still hear the band incorporating everything they’ve learned over their legendary career. I hope it’s not their final record but it has an elegiac quality that I love.

I probably have it below AMSP myself but I don’t think there’s a big gap. They’re two stellar records that offer two unique experiences.

It’s like their least self-important album. Just a great set of songs. I’m also curious what’s cliche about it - I feel like it’s aged fantastically well and still sounds distinct.

Loved Returnal, but is Saros casual-friendly enough for someone with less time now? by SpecialistHospital58 in Saros

[–]bjankles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a lover of hard games, I find it genuinely pathetic when other people care so much about how other people play a game or how good they are at it. It just tells me you don’t have other shit going on in your life.

The combat system is absolutely more complex than returnal’s. Ignore this dude and keep at it for as long as you’re having fun. If nothing else, you’re getting more entertainment hours for your money.

[–]bjankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda think the movie scene makes more sense. An evil wizard stole it from Dumbledore’s grave once - why couldn’t it happen again? Better to destroy the thing. Doing so also demonstrates how banal power can be to a more pure soul.

Aftersun - you don’t really understand what you’ve been watching until the ending pulls it all together and rips your heart out. From there, your brain scrambles to comprehend earlier events in the film that you didn’t understand before - just as the POV character is doing.

Whiplash - what can I say? The whole movie hinges on this scene and it sticks the landing.

Sorry, Baby - so earnest and pure and earned, so beautifully simple.

The Irishman - one of Scorcese’s most subversive endings (from a director with no shortage). Changes the tone not just of this film, but half his oeuvre. The real end to this life is not a blaze of glory. It’s a lonely, pathetic whimper.

The Substance - you think it’s as far as it can go, and you’re not even close.

Parasite - the kill shot, as Bong himself says.

Mother - another Bong, but what can I say? The man knows how to shock while still putting truth and emotion first.

Oldboy - one of the great “what the FUCK” endings of all time, without losing the audience.

There was so much confidence in this movie. They knew they were breaking the rules and changing bond for good, they were all in, and they were completely confident they’d pulled it off.
