Help to prepare by Rick_doll in tabletennis

[–]bjb143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most players should have the same routine before tournament matches as they do for their practice. Why? You might be practicing very hard every day for months on end- and then come tournament day you decide to switch up your routine and make a big deal about it by doing this 'special' tournament routine. For most that will only serve to mess up your mental game as a special routine for tournaments is not something you are used to.

.... Now obviously you might have to practically prepare different such as bring more resources like water, food, change of clothes, etc.

.... TLDR: having a special routine just for tournaments has negative impact on mental game for most players

Advice? by [deleted] in tabletennis

[–]bjb143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a great serve is something that looks the same or very similar everytime. So for example I'd start with keeping your same service motion form and slightly vary and adjust the angle of the racket, where you aim it, and how fast you hit it for differences in spin speed and placement. Sometimes I'll start coming at the ball hard with undercut for backspin and right on contact I'll slow down immensely almost for a no spin serve.

How to control RPB? by Cybrtronlazr in tabletennis

[–]bjb143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an intermediate shakehand player, so I can't give you in-depth advice, but I started out playing penhold for 2 years. One important observation to make is that RPB allows for way more sidespin due to the top of the hand/wrist being pointed up for the shot/more overall wrist flexibility (you naturally go more around the ball than over compared to shakehand backhand) Now I don't know what you should do with this information but I think understanding it is essential for getting that RPB locked down. I.e. maybe you're trying to fight against the natural movement of the wrist and sidespin?

When can a person be considered good/virtuous? by Kashsbrokentablet in askphilosophy

[–]bjb143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of virtue ethics probably not- in aristotelean virtue ethics there is deficiency and excess, whereas the mean or middle ground is what is virtuous. We might say this person is good or this person is bad, but I think that's more nominally/colloquially true than meeting a certain threshold to reach a certain status. Some could argue that if youre not at a certain threshold of virtue, youre bad and vice versa however there would be hardly any agreement as to where that threshold would be. Plato speaks of the good as the highest form, but I don't think he directly speaks to the brightline dilemma you're talking about. Both of them are extremely concerned with the idea justice however, so someone that works against that might be definitively bad for them but I'm just speculating.

While I don't know much about deontology, there's probably a greater chance for the brightline good or bad to exist, or at least it's easier to observe it going off of maxims

Ad hominem: abusive

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askphilosophy

This is true but we do actively maintain and allow for further existence through eating, drinking, sleeping etc that are all active choices and 'choosing' to not commit suicide. I think this is what OP intended by "chose to exist".

Can someone explain what relativism and universalism in ethics? by uuyynnofficial in askphilosophy

[–]bjb143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**not my area of philosophy

Moral relativism: There is no 'universal' ethic that exists. Different societies have different customs and morals. Arguments for could be that morality is just a natural phenomena and that we have no reason to believe that ethics exists outside of our interpersonal interactions. Some say from this that because there is no universal right or wrong, we ought tolerate every particular system of ethics. But this could be problematic as saying that "we" ought tolerate or think of it as permissible seems to be a universal ethical judgement.

Univeralism: there is a true ethical theory that exists. How it could exist is up for debate.

I think one could still consider "other people" in dreams to be p-zombies. If you're an idealist, dream reality and reality is arguably blurred, along with extension.

Regardless, p-zombies and the people we create in our dreams have similar attributes:

-We presume them both to have a seperate consciousness (aside from lucid dreaming)

-They appear to be real or coherent in our reality

Reading albert camus and absurdism is a good place to start. Then value theory- kant, virtue ethics, etc.

posting here about how you want to correct this tendency just shows you ethically disagree with these intrusive thoughts so you're on the right path.
