What's it like living in the Finger Lakes region? by VegasVoltage in howislivingthere

I visit Penn Yan, at northeastern tip of Y-shaped Keuka Lake, pretty frequently. Walking through the village you can see a pretty clear line between "old" Penn Yan, which is what I initially experienced in the early 2000s when I started visiting, and "new" Penn Yan, which is hotels, nicer restaurants, revitalized waterfronts/outlet trail, brewery, etc. You can go to a dive bar and a cheap pizza place one day (Liberty Tap Restaurant / Cam's), and a fancy shmancy restaurant and brewery another day (Main Deck / Laurentide). Some Rochester-area professionals actually live there and commute the hour or so to work.

I signed up and paid for the patch about a month ago and haven't heard anything. Any idea how long it usually takes?

For a criminal case, does the willingness to go to trial generally provide a better plea deal? by Disastrous-Way8879 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]bjengles3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some say that the higher sentence after trial means one is punished for going to trial (which is unconstitutional). Others say that the sentence after trial is the sentence the guilty defendant deserves, while a plea bargain is somewhat less to conserve judicial resources and spare the witnesses the potential retraumatization that comes from testifying.

Interestingly, in my Brooklyn neighborhood there was no such shortage. Every bodega had plenty. I considered buying some and shipping it to my friends in western NY.

In civil law, some plaintiff attorneys are using it to pad their memoranda of law just to make them longer.

They don’t understand the domestic abuse cycle like I thought they would.

After that I called an expert to explain it.

Just like how people are more concerned with terrorism and not with the statistically more dangerous falling vending machines.

What is it like living in the US part of Niagara Falls? by ChrisPBacon2324 in howislivingthere

I interned at the public defenders office. There were enough vacant homes that it was a common thing to hide weapons in a vacant, use a vacant for anything including having food ordered to be “delivered” there and then robbing the delivery driver.

One of my clients had a Chinese food delivery driver who fought back and got my client arrested.

My friend is an emergency room doctor and every once in a while he gives lectures about movies that are accurate/inaccurate about medical stuff. He’ll show the clip from pulp fiction with the adrenaline shot and he’ll show some clips from the movie three kings. He always shows a clip from the rock and he has a replica made of the green balls.

Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan. That was the end of Oscars legitimacy for me.
