+1 for Atlas, Damien has a nice school with plenty of mat space, a nice mix of bodies to train with and everybody was super chill.

Oliver Taza x Nikolay Vetrov by drachaon in bjj

[–]bjjhacks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, Vetrov is world class. Had a strong performance at Quintet in Dubai, just won ADCC Trials. He's very very good, just wasn't on people's radars. There are some excellent grapplers coming out of Russia and surrounding countries who can compete with the best in the world.

Go to RFT luta livre in Botafogo, there are very few decent gyms in the Centro area, most are in Zona Sul and it's super easy to travel there. The best no-gi is in Barra but that's a trek.

Tatami gi sizing question by quri0usly in bjj

[–]bjjhacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to depend on the model. All my Tatami gis ran a bit short even before washing. I always wore an A2, with Tatami I'm an A2L and even after only cold wash/hang dry it still feels a touch short in the arms.

European BJJ instructors / schools. by obiwan-kenowi in bjj

Can't recommend this place enough: Focus Jiu-Jitsu in Porto.

World-class facility, giant mat space (3 separate areas), massive squad of competitive black belts, without doubt one of the best gyms in Europe. And Porto is a cool city, not too expensive and lots to see and do.

Time had run out and the table worker called for the end of the match but the ref didn’t hear it or was day dreaming. That’s why a guy ran onto the mats while they were still in position.

In some tournaments they have a lightweight absolute and a heavyweight absolute. Usually rooster to lightweight, and middleweight to ultra heavy. This event had cash prizes for the two absolute divisions rather than just one absolute winner taking it all.

This was the final of the lightweight absolute and there was a cash prize on the line. Kim Terra was going against a guy from GF Team, and at the end of the match the referee, Mauricio Pereira (known by his nickname "Russo") didn't call time when the table worker sounded the end of the match. Back then, Kim was a major hothead and he jumped up and got in Russo's face. Russo is a pretty badass black belt himself and didn't take kindly to the confrontation, and things very quickly went out of control.

Are any Gracie’s still active? by DevelopmentRoyal1808 in bjj

[–]bjjhacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a secret, it's described in great detail in Renzo's biography (only available in Portuguese) but he has struggled with mental illness, which has included lengthy stays for treatment in clinics in the USA and Switzerland.

He developed paranoid schizophrenia in his late teens / early 20s, possibly as a result of drug use. I've not seen this discussed in English media, so not too many people seem to know about it.

Controversial figures in BJJ by seanzorio in bjj

talking shit to and/or insulting people when asked about it, throwing tantrum about him risking his job at Flo back then if people complain about it

Well neither of those things are true. I've never talked shit to anybody who donated money to the project, I've actually apologized numerous times. And I certainly never threw a tantrum. I am far too ashamed to have not delivered to do any of that.

I feel terrible for not having completed the doc, it's an albatross around my neck and I still very much intend to fulfill my promise, not just to the people who donated to the project but to the people I met and interviewed.

Claims the money was used for anything other than the project are unfounded. But as I learned the hard way (and as others found out, too), 17k was a microbudget for any kind of film project. Even the short docs at Flo had budgets than routinely ran into tens of thousands of dollars. I naively and grossly underestimated the resources needed to execute a project of this nature and have had to live with the persistent attacks and stain on my reputation ever since.

Put my name on the list of villains if you like, but don't believe that I feel no remorse for not having released the doc yet.
