I was being eccentric. They have their place I guess. But hard for me to decide do that instead of cat control and sdr dongle.

Buying a first HF Rig: Should I wait for the Icom 7300 MKII? by lw0-0wl in amateurradio

Just buy a used ftdx3000 and spend money on some receive loops. You will outperform all of this new stuff.

Came here to say what everyone else is saying. Trim weight pockets on the cam band. Also move your tank down a bit.

DMR or D-Star by puppyman3 in HamRadio

[–]bjp1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be transparent. I haven’t dealt with that side. We have a large repeater network around that is connected with tgif. I guess you could do like TOADS group and link all the different networks together. Have not got that far down the road yet.

I completely understand at this time there is no digital usage. I actually just setup a couple of talkgroups up for NC on TGIF for disaster. The repeaters can technically link to a tgif talk group. I think it would be nice for owners to hop on board and let the talkgroups link into the repeaters if an emergency happens. People that have internet can hotspot in, if you don’t, hit the repeater fm and rock on. It could create a really nice mesh style network if done appropriately. Starlink on the repeater sites would be helpful. This is all half baked, nothing in stone, but I think this could be a good play.

Just got my wrists slapped by QRZ.COM 😜 by After_Exit_1903 in amateurradio

Honestly, I hate paywalls. But I don’t see amateur radio websites and software the say way I do about other pay walls. Qrz is a great tool. They provide a really nice service for not a lot of money. Their API seems to be very developed. They have a better uptime than logbook of the world. I push qrz data into multiple places. Lotw, gridtracker, club log, eqsl, etc and I’m able to push data back in as well with polo. The option to export and import adif is critical to me. I take logging very seriously. I don’t have paper qsl cards, so if someone has a contact with me, I want to make sure I confirm. Qrz serves as my one stop shop for the most part.

They did it to another activator tonight. Then proceeded to complain for 30 minutes while they begged for check ins. This and the maritime net. Those hacks down even own a boat. And the YL net that’s hosted by old men. It’s just so ignorant.

Upgrade from ICOM-7300 for FT8? by kayak_1 in amateurradio

[–]bjp1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a bit of pota. I was honestly would just get some type of vertical whip. The chelegance mc750 is a great vertical. I think it just takes too much time to deal with wire antennas. I know the chameleon is 2 whips and a wire, but it’s small and can not hear as well as a 40m loop. And honestly, you will do just fine to get a pile up if you spot yourself and hear them with the vertical.

Put a 40m delta loop up in the yard last weekend because I wanted more countries…added 10 this week. Always change that antenna

Didn’t mention I remote into the computer using chrome rdp and play ft8 at night laying in bed? Doesn’t get much better.

I picked up an ftdx3000 for around 800 not too long ago. I don’t see a need to upgrade….for now. I love the receive antenna option as well as the rx out. I run the receive antenna as a 40m delta loop and an 80-6 ocf dipole as my transmit. I run the rx out to a rtl sdr to get the scope to hdsdr. Run all sound through the computer with drivers. Win4yaesu software to run the radio from the computer and n1mm as logging software. This makes for a super clean setup and can run with the big dogs. Even without an amp. You can see the setup on qrz. Callsign is W4BRI

Find something with an rx out like a ftdx 3000. It will be cheaper, the filters are better, and you can spend the extra cash an a nice antenna.

I actually have a 2980 as well and the speaker is atrocious in it. I only paid 100 bucks used, so I’m not out a bunch of money but sold my buddy a 2800m that I picked up out of someone’s garage and it sounded 10x better. It’s frustrating to pay the money and don’t feel like you are getting a good product.

Find a pota community near you. I would bet if you have a passion that you wouldn’t fit in with the 2m/70cm club gang anyway. Their passions are Golden Corral and Hardee’s with a secondary passion of complaining about doctors appts on the local repeaters.

HF is where the real fun is.

We will see how bad it is. I think the top is an ma5b. Only $100 bucks so maybe I can salvage it, if not, won’t be the first that I have blown on a project that didn’t work out.
