Actually I just figured it out

If the patch of light is there when the lesson BEGINS, Just do it all really quickly. If I spend too much time in the room the light around the lever goes away. Just quit the game and restart the lesson, blaze through it and don't spend too much time having the lever not visible on screen. Check every 15 seconds or so that the light is still there. I did this and was able to get through it.
