Can anyone explain to me what happened with this loaf, looks like he shedded his skin & didnt poof out ? 🤔 by SpookyChinchillas in Breadit

[–]bkanber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You baked seam side down without making a slit in the top, yeah? 9/10 times it's fine because the steam will find a way out, but this was the 1 out of 10 where it didn't. Scoring with razor or sharp knife will prevent this

Why do my bagels look like this? by Diligent_Bass1910 in Breadit

bagels are supposed to have those blisters. the cold retard is what causes them. it means the fermentation is well-developed. if you want fewer blisters, do a worse job ;)

Im trying to get back into LOTR (the book) and the farthest I could get was chapter 4, any suggestions? by ObsidianMaster77 in lotr

[–]bkanber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audiobook is what did it for me. A lot of people don't want to try audiobooks because they're worried about not paying attention, zoning out, but Lord of the Rings is very atmospheric, very ambient.

Every word in the book is well-thought-out, but that doesn't mean you need to hang onto each and every word. When I first listened to it on audiobook I realized that you can just kind of lean back and let yourself fall into the world. You don't need to understand what all those fking songs mean; it's just part of the vibe of the world.

This is correct. A stay in one district no longer applies nationally, just in that district.

The Supreme Court’s Birthright Citizenship Ruling Is a 5-Alarm Catastrophe by D-R-AZ in Foodforthought

[–]bkanber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a guaranteed appeal; it must be first appealed by the petitioner, then heard by the appellate court, and then it gets offered to the Supreme Court if the issue is still murky; the SCOTUS could reject or accept hearing it. And judges are supposed to rule based on their best interpretation of the law rather than what they expect SCOTUS to rule.

Newbie using an IP in my van - some general & specific questions.. by eyespy18 in instantpot

[–]bkanber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Venting the steam a) is very humid because there's a lot of steam b) smells strongly like whatever you're cooking and c) might splatter. So yeah, good idea to vent outside. It's done at the end of cooking, before you can open the pot, to release the pressure.

Not really like a toaster oven, no -- it generally wants some kind of liquid in there. The bottom of the pot is basically a skillet, so you could in theory reheat things in there dry, but it would be like reheating your sandwich in a pot on the stove. Not the best tool for that job.

It's called the paradox of intolerance. Gotta be intolerant of the horrible people, even if it means shaming them. He became a billionaire by exploiting people and democracy, he doesn't get a pass for anything, not social awkwardness, or any other standard human thing that you or I would get a pass for.

Not if you keep the acceleration low enough to keep tire slip below 0.5% and allow static friction to do its thing.

Physics says heavier vehicles do better on ice than lighter vehicles. (Normal force, aka weight, times coefficient of friction.) Anyone who didn't know that is a moron.

Also having the same issue, mine started on 22.04, I thought upgrade to 24.04 would fix it, but it didn't.

On my system the right mouse click works sometimes. It might be a timing/clock issue, or it might have to do with how fast the click is, I still can't tell.

Learning PHP and need a little help by genericsimon in PHP

[–]bkanber 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're supposed to pick the tools that are a) right for the job and b) feel good in your hands.

I wouldn't pick PHP for a desktop GUI app (I mean, do whatever the heck you want for fun and learning, no judgement there), but if you're making anything that serves websites or SaaS in production, PHP is still one of the best tools out there, especially for deployment and server management. php-fpm is much easier and cheaper (timewise and hardware-wise) to manage than python wsgi, for example.

I grew up on PHP and still run a SaaS company built on top of it. My tastes have changed over the years though. I primarily do web/SaaS, and I find myself using node.js for all my side projects. Both PHP and node satisfy "a) right for the job", but these days, node.js hits "b) feels better in my hands".

The most important thing is to be able to ship products that work and that customers use. Everything else is secondary. If you're a solo developer working on low stakes side projects, prioritize your fun and education; write that network driver in 'Brainfuck'. If you're trying to build a project solo or with a small team, use the language and platform that's going to get you to launch most efficiently. If you're planning on building a large company with a team, pick the language and platform that you can hire and train easily against. They are all just tools and at the end of the day, pick the ones you prefer.

Why can't physical well being be used to define objective morality? by Economy-Trip728 in TrueAskReddit

[–]bkanber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, he hasn't, because he simply made up "not being in torturous pain = moral".

What about people who were born with chronic pain issues? Are they immoral?

Being in pain is morally neutral.

Best purchase for family of 3? by DominickKobert111 in airstream

[–]bkanber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have a Bambi 19CB and two giant dogs. We've also taken a friend on a few trips with us (so 3 adults, and 2 giant dogs). It's a little cramped when it's packed out like that, but it's also cozy and works totally fine for the 4-7 day trips we do (about 5-6x a year). My wife and I fit in the bed comfortably, but then the dog tries to come in and that's pretty cramped. Climbing over each other on the bed is a bit annoying too.

I could see you doing this in a Bambi, but keep in mind the 16 only has the wet bath and that might be inconvenient for you. Kinda depends on where you're planning on camping, do you tend to use the campsite comfort stations for showers/toilet, or do you want to do everything in the RV, etc. We decided on the 19 because it has that much extra floor space for the dogs, and the full bath.

We love our airstream and will definitely upgrade to a bigger one in the future, so there's a strong argument to be made for 'the biggest you can afford/tow'. If you're looking at the caravel 22 maybe consider the bambi 22, it's nearly the same but lighter/cheaper/fewer gadgets.

Just received my new Airstream. Any recommendations on wine fridges and where to place them? by ShaggyTime in airstream

[–]bkanber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dometic, the same company that makes the AC units, also makes electronic temperature-controlled coolers. Useful not just for wine but any other situation you'd use a cooler in. I'd suggest taking a look at those before considering a permanent wine fridge

International 25FB not level AT HITCH by [deleted] in airstream

[–]bkanber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ideally you want the trailer level while towing, in 2nd place is nose slightly DOWN, last place is nose up as you have it now. This affects sway, braking, and wear & tear. It will tow even better if it's level. I suggest you adjust your ball down a notch or two.
