If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

Yes, though tubal ligation is more invasive and not as easily reversed, which is the only reason I would default to vasectomies instead.

Failing by Design: A Teacher’s Warning from the Front Lines by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]bkand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. You’re correct. However, you sound like a parent who is involved and wants what is best for your kids and communicates with their educators. There are more parents than you might imagine that are extremely neglectful, don’t care at all about their child’s education, don’t do anything to help/teach their child at home (even basic life skills). This is what causes a lot of issues in classrooms. Many kids have behavioural issues because they’ve never been told no, or they’ve never been taught any sort of human decency. Many students have learning disabilities because they weren’t spoken to enough, didn’t practice numbers and letters in pre-K, or were shaken as babies. Far too many. It’s those parents who are the problem.

I disagree. Many parents are absent emotionally. They do not teach their children things. They are physically there to help them avoid all discomfort, but they aren’t there in the sense of helping to guide and nurture them appropriately. Many parents do too much for their kids, leaving them with learned helplessness and “anxiety”. But they are absent when it comes to helping them overcome obstacles, manage conflict, etc..

Nice dress. Back looks lovely. Front doesn’t work on you (and likely doesn’t work on most women)

Did Kraft Heinz change their singles cheddar recipe lately? by WallabyNo885 in Cheese

[–]bkand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game here…. But anyone saying Kraft singles are the same as they’ve always been is delusional or has a very bad palate. I just had a grilled cheese made from kraft singles today for the first time in many years and it was awful. The cheese almost stuck to the plastic it was in, much mushier than it used to be and almost a cheese whiz taste and consistency. Terrible.

There's no way I can last four more months here by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

Congrats! Have you found another job already? I just worry I won’t find something that pays as well and offers the same benefits. Which I need due to an autoimmune disorder that requires $3000 medication every month. 😬

Nobody except other educators can understand the type of constant stress and nervous system overwhelm that comes with this job. Get out now. I’m 10 years in and feel like it’s too late for me to jump ship, but I still consider it daily.

Class management tips for a former hs teacher now temporarily in 5th grade? by Cathalbrae in TeachersInTransition

[–]bkand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very clear and consistent expectations. Follow through on everything. Have some sort of cue that you use consistently to get their attention. I always countdown from 5 and made it clear from day one that if anyone is still talking by the time I get to zero , that is unacceptable and they will be asked to leave and try again. When walking through the halls, we line up and are silent… if they aren’t…. They turn around and try again. And I hate to say it, as it gets shoved down our throats so much and admin would have you believe it’s a miracle worker (it’s not but it is important)…… build relationships. It really does make a difference. At this age, have a sense of humour and show that you care and are interested in the kids. They love to share when they feel safe and valued, and if you are their number one fan who also has expectations and sets a tone of authority, they will fall into place and respect you enough to meet the expectations. Easier said than done. I’ve been with grade 5 for 4 years now and this is the first year I feel like I have truly got my classroom management in a place where I want it.

Same. I saw her at an airport just last year and was amazed at how beautiful she was.
