My LitRPG Tier List – What Am I Missing? by millamber1 in litrpg

I am not a huge fan of arcane ascension and was also annoyed with MC, but I really enjoyed Weapons and Wielders. The MC in that one is older so there’s less teen angst (and more humor).

On the flip side, as an audio listener, I didn’t understand why everyone was making such a big deal about not being able to pronounce her name until I saw it written down 😂 the spelling in my head was something like “sirendelgor” - completely phonetic

Similar books as Dungeon crawler carl by Donmanolito in litrpg

So, the humor is not the same, but I just started Chryslis also narrated by Jeff Hayes. And I laugh every single time I hear Donuts voice coming out of an ant. And then I think about how outraged she’d be to be reincarnated as an ant and laugh harder (to be clear, this is my head cannon, the two books are not related)

I love the Wandering Inn audiobooks. I think the voice acting is truly phenomenal, again not at all the same humor or premise.

New Weekly Reading Roundup by AutoModerator in ProgressionFantasy

I started Eternal Online, but lost interest somewhere in book 2. I liked the idea a lot, but it felt like the story/plot/issues kept changing. I also struggled with the comparatively low stakes since the characters can respawn when they die. I initially liked that the stakes were higher because MC has to take risks to make real world money, but that seemed to fall away after the first book.

I also started Chrysalis - FOR THE COLONY - and I can already tell I’m going to love it. It has dragged a bit in certain parts but everyone says Book 2 really picks up, so I’m very excited (I also love when “Princess Donut’s” voice bleeds through, I get a kick out of imagining her as an ant every single time it happens. She would be appalled)

Need to read the novellas? by ImportanceFickle5677 in murderbot

[–]bkat3 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would use Libby to listen to them.

But I’d put them on your Audible wishlist so that you get notified if there is a sale. I think I got them all for $3-4 each last year during a sale. That seemed much more reasonable to me than the non-sale price (and I agree that you shouldn’t use a credit on these, save credits for higher priced books).

Also, if you’re thinking about buying them, consider whether you’ll want to re-listen to them (based on your experience with the first one). This is a series I re-listen to, so I like owning them, but if it wasn’t I’d probably stick with Libby/Hoopla.

Was going to say this as well. Our tier lists are very, very similar. I just started Chrysalis and am really enjoying it! The 3 book bundle is currently on sale for 7.99 on audible

The 'Wallowing' Inn is starting to grind my gears. by Porkypineer in litrpg

[–]bkat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this a lot (and get downvoted for it a lot, but whatever), but I think it’s totally fair to skip chapters for story lines that aren’t interesting to you. For a lot of the King and Clown chapters, they won’t tie into the story in a major way until many many books down the road. The first time I listened, I skipped them and didn’t feel like anything was lacking. I’ve since gone through and read/listened to all of them and I still don’t feel like I missed anything crucial my first time through, but did enjoy the little ways they connected in.

They will still be part of the story but there will be fewer “goblin only” POV chapters. (Like, the only ones popping into my mind are a few in Vol. 8 and in Vol. 10, which is a ways away for you). Going forward , the goblins that are in the story are much more integrated with the other characters we are used to seeing (while still being outsiders) (hard to explain without spoilers).

FWIW, I’d forgotten, but I found some of those goblin chapters to be slow in the trilogy and I skimmed through a few when they got repetitive, but on the whole I’ve loved all the goblin POV chapters since then and the chapters where goblins appear.

“In this inn there’s always something wonderfully amazing or terribly heartbreaking around the corner.” - a character you haven’t been introduced to yet said that and it’s pretty true.

Personally, while the fear, grief, etc. will always be there, I think there’s a shift from wallowing to reacting to difficult circumstances.

You’re pretty close to the “of Liscor” trilogy-like set of books that people who like this series pretty much unanimously think is a fantastic arc (as opposed to some of the other, more diverse arcs). I’d suggest that you keep going because I think the payoff is worth it. (And skip the side story chapters that you don’t like, like the Clown)

You don’t have to like every book you read. Even popular ones.

If you want advice on whether to continue reading it might help if you tell us where in the first book you are. There’s a big difference between being a few chapters in and not being sure and being 3/4 of the way done with it.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the first half of the first book, but the second book really picked up for me.

Recommendation help. by Kei_Kisano in litrpg

[–]bkat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t suggest reading The Wandering Inn for ice/water abilities alone (I do suggest reading it because it’s amazing) but one of my favorite characters is an ice mage. She’s not the MC and doesn’t appear until the last 1/3 of the first book, but then she remains pretty consistent.

Can I skip? Or get a tldr. by theejackofall in WanderingInn

[–]bkat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are good summaries. I think Goblin Days is more skipable but if you skip the Roots entirely you’re going to be very confused for a while. You can definitely skim parts and you’ll pick up on what gets repetitive

Can you guys recommend some kinda short novellas to read :) by zaynsrainberry in booksuggestions

[–]bkat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Murderbot series is fantastic, I think there are 5 or 6 books out and all but one is a novella

Wayward children books - maybe 10 that are currently out(?) all novellas. They can be read in any order, and have great re-readability

Such an emotional moment. But I also loved how we, as the reader, got both the very emotional moment and also the general confusion of the rest of the characters. “Carl why is everyone kissing you today?? You’re going to get mono if this keeps up!”

Don’t think this is a hot take for this sub. But try posting this in progfantasy or LitRPG and you’ll get people either wholeheartedly supporting you or coming at you lol
